Three Little Boy* Who HoGnrnd I Vith a
BhranneU.
During the late war betwee/n the
etatee and, when the Federal* were in
possession of Franklin, says the Nash
vftie Banner, they were freqneutly 1
alarmed by reports that Gen. Forrest’s
cavalry force was preparing to swoop
down upon them. At the slightest
alarm,the soldiers would beealledeut
in lino of battle to defend the camp,
and would frequently throw a few
•heßs oatjun the {line of the Columbia
turnpike todevelop the supposed Con
federate strength. On one of these
occasions a shell Called to explode
and fell harmless in the front yard of
the Neely residence. The little Neely
boys found the shell, and hoping to
have some fun secured sotno fire and
proceeded to iguite the fuse. The
fuse did rot burn readily, and three
of the boys bent down over the shell
and began to blow the fire, that it
might more more speedily communi
cate with the nowder. While in this
position the shell exploded with a
loud report, and, strange to say, not
one of the boys were hurt It is sup
posed that the ground offering the
most resistance, the shell bounded
above the heads of the boys who were
lying down before the explosion oc
curred and hence they escaped with
out injury. But tho Yankees beard
the report, and thinking Forrest was
upon them, thoy quickly formed in
line of battle, and prepared to defend
themselves. Three hours passed, and
as no enemy appeared a scout was
sent out to Investigate, The scout
found the boys and a piece of ike ex
ploded shell, and reported. The boys
were arrested and kept under guard
for several hours before they ewiid be
made to tell the truth of the matter
They were finally released with a re
primand. Tho little boys of that day
are grown mn now, and one of them
is a citizen of Nashville.

With suck rspid strides do we move
in these days of scientific activity
that no sooner have we ceased from
expressing our astonishment at
some great engineering feat than
another la achieved to overwhelm us
with yet greater wonderment. Bnt
the other day, as it seems, all the
world waa talking of that triumph
of human skill, the now far-famed
Mont Cenis Tunnel. Then came the
piercing of the Bt. Gothard moun
tain and now we have to record the
completion of the Arlberg works and
the consequent leveling of tho last
barrier that separated the Western Ty
ro) from the rest of Austria. Fourteen
years were required for the comple
tion of the first work, with its seven
and a half miles of subterranean
length; only eight years for the
second, which is folly a mile and a
half longer, and not more three years,
for the third and latest, which reaches
a length of from six to seven miles.
Commenced in November. 1880, it
was on tho Wth of November, 1883,
that the charge was tired and the
tollers In the bowels of tho mountain
met face to foce. Since that half-way
meeting of the gallant subterranean
laborers the work has been advanced
with Incredible dispatch, and on the
9th of September goods were passing
from Innsbruck to Marseilles.
OUAIUt FROM HEAVEN
According to tlie Calhoun Times,
Mrs. J. W. Davis, af Uesaca, had a
very singular experience the other
day. On Thursday la*t she expect
ed several preachers to dine with her,
but after searching the town she
could ouly find one chicken. She
was busy in the kitchen preparing
the little chicken when she heard a
terrible fluttering,and on looking, ob
•erred a covey of partridges had flown
into the dining room. The doors and
windows were quiokly closed, and
six of tliebirds werocaptured. These,
with the chicken, made an elegant
dinner, and the preachers were invi
ted in to help eat the birds. Borne of
the good people of live place look op
on the occurrence as providential, and
it may be that the All-Wise had a
hand in directing the flight. of the
birds. (As Henry Grady is up in
those parts, the above story is easily

Augusta Chronicle: Monday morn
ing judge Roney commenced the
hearing of the injunction case of the
Port Royal and Augusta Ratiway, in
its own right and as lessee of the Au
gusta Knoxville Railroad, against the
city for obstructing their work of
counseling these two roads through
the streets of Augusta. The cose has
been pending sometime, and bao tak
en something like the following
course: In February last Roy
al and Augusta Railway served no
tice of its intention to ley It* track and
connect through certain streets of Au
gusta with the Augusta and Knox
ville Railroad, and called for Coun
cil to exercise its police regulations
In the work, claiming that the reads
were alone subject to the damage*
which ordinarily occnred in condemn
ing right-of-way. The city Council
denied the right of the railroad* to
connect, whereupon the latter pro
ceeded to construct the track without
further ado. The Mayor accordingly
had workmen arrested, and the Port
Royal and Augusta Railway then
filed a bill of injunction to restrain
the city from further interference in
the matter.
Oglethorpe Echo; Since the elec
tion last week there has been consid
erable talk and speculation as to what
would be the result efthe tie between
J. McWhorter and ,U. M, Witcher.
The Governor was written to concern
ing it, and replied that he had no
power to act in the matter, but that
It was a question for tho Legislature
to decide. And now the general
question is "What will the Log
islature do with 111" As it new
stands, a majority are of opinion that
that body will count the Vote cast at
Crawford for J. H. MeWhorter, since
J. L. Jarrell, who cast it. will make
an affidavit that he Intended fo vote
for the candidate, J, McWhorter.
Rumors have been abroad that C. JJ,
Witcher withdraw from the coni'
test, bnt we are of the opinion that
he Will not, but contest the whole vole
before Hie Legislature. Ifthisshould
be done, a sub-committee will proba
bly be appoluted from that body to
canvass the ontire vote and make a
recount, throwing out all the illegal
vote and make a recount, throwing
out all the illegal votes cast. This
might change the result considerably
There is hardly anything else talked
of on the street*, and so many differ
insr opinions given that it Is hard to
come to any definite conclusion about
the matter. At present it is all the
talk, and the opinion* above given are
what we have derived from
wo have heard. At present Risin a
muddle.

Treatment of Oaaoer.
For twenty years I have suffered
from a cancer on the side of my neck
near my ahoulder, and exhausted the
whole catalogue of remedies without
any relief. The cancer growing worse
all the time, the whole upper part ef
my body became stiff and fullof pain
I had virtually lost the use of both
arms, my general health had broken
down and 1 saw it was only a ques
tion of time when life itself would be
destroyed. In this condition I com
menced the use ef Swift's Specific.
The first bottle relieved me of the
stiffness in the neck, the second gaTe
mo perfect use of my arms, and I feel
strong and well in every way. Lam a

for the good I have experienced with
Swift’s Specific. I believe it will free*
out all the poison and cure me. I
