The wagon yard in East Athena
was a aeeue of wild confusion Friday
morning about 2 o’clock. There were
about forty persona in the yard, and
two negroes, who were stopping in
the yard, got into * fusa and com
menced cursing to loud that it waked
up tho whole neighborhood, and
among tho rest Mayor Dorsey, who
mounted hia horse and came over in
the city after tho police. The Mayor
headed the police and immediately
want to the scene of the difficulty. As
soon as the police made their
ance the negroes ran and the police
commenced firing at them. This
ranted a stampede among tho mules
and horses, and for a while tho wild
est confusion reigned.- The negroes
were captured and brought to the
calaboose. Tho Mayor tried tbe two
negroes and both of them plead guil
ty. The Mayor fined one |lO and the
other <ls. They paid their fines and
left for their homes in Madison
oounty.

The meeting of the Plenary Coun
cil at Baltimore has been made the
occasion for gathering some very in
teresting figures relative to the
growth of religious denominations in
the United States. The population of
the country in 1860 was according to
tho census, 31,445.000. It is now
estimated at 55,000,000. These figures,
show a gain in 24 years of 23,500.000,
or at the rate ot 75 per cent. In 1860
tho nuiaberot Methodists was placed
at 8,600,000. It Is now not far from
15,000,000. It is‘the strongest, nume
rically, of all the denominations. It
has exactly kept pace with the increase
of population.
The number of Baptists in 1860 was
8,000,000. It ia now 12,000,000. The
increase has been about 25 per cent,

dist „
The Preshyteiians numbered in
1860 3,600.000. Now they number
5,500,000, an increase in 25 years of 53
per cent.
Tne Lutherans, who have been ma
terially benefi t and byfeonstant Increas
ing emigration from Germany, Swed
en, Holland and Norway, have grown
from 1,250,000 in 1860 to 2,000,000 in
1884, or at the rale of 60 per cent.
The Congregationalista have declin
ed relatively. They have only in

000, in 1884. The Reform Churches—
Dutch, German aud Evaugelicai—
have increased from 810,000 in 1860
to 1,200.000 at the present dtps.

absolute as well as relative decline.

The denomination of Christians
number 800,000 against 500,000 in

yet a falling off relatively of 15.
The Catholics show the most sur
nrising increase. In iB6O they num
bered in the United State* 3,175,000.
Now they are 9,500,000. This is a
gain of 200 per cenU in 25 years
Should the same ratio ot increase
continue to be preserved, they would
number 15 years hence 25,000,000.
Bishop Gross, of this city, has placed
before ihe Council at Eatlimore plans
for mere effective pastoral work among
the colored people of the Southern
Slate*. It is estimated that all churches
of all creed* in tho country have ac
commodation* for 27,500,000 people,
or just about one-half of the popula
