FLYING FINANCIAL KITES.
Worriment That Will Make a Man
Gray In Leu Than a Year.
[New York Sun.]
“There goes the Prinee ot Kitera,’’ re
marked a former bank clerk of Newark,
as ho pointed to a middle-aged wan,
with a look of trouble on his face, who
was leaving (lie bank at the coiner of
Broad arid Bank streets, “i’vo been in
tho business pretty extensively myself,
but 1 must, give him the credit of being
able to fly a bigger debt, keeping up a
respectable show all the time, than any
other poor fellow who has been ground
between the shyloeks who lend money
and the notaries who protest cheeks.
Tlifre are more kiters than you dream
of. T can soon tell one, just as a gam
bler can pick out a gambler or one im
pccuno recognize another.
“Every species of animal has its own
marks and habits. When I see a man
shinning- around Newark every morn
ing an hour or tWo after ho ought to bo
at his store or office in New York, and
trying to borrow somebody's check here
and having hurried interviews with tho
notary there, I say to myself: ‘ that
poor wretch is in the toils, too. In some
way he contracted a small debt which he
didn't want any one to know about, and
he thoughtdo pull through by doing a
little kite-flying. Its a costly expedi
ent, I oau-assure you from experience.
It costs time, large discounts,*and fre
quent notary fees, and the longer you
go on the worso it is.
“1 lived ton expensively, and got bo
hind financially. I kept putting olf
creditors to whom 1 owed finally iji-100,
but they pressed me hard, until I br
rowed a friend's check for SIOO. and
used it in satisfying for a tiuiii tho
hounds who were after me. When it
became duo 1 gave my ow n chock to
meet it, and then borrowed anothor
friend's chock to deposit against my
own. That's the way I got started. My
creditors wanted the rest of their
money, and therefore T borrowed SBOO
from a brother clerk, paying a good dis
count for it. So I kept oil borrowing
money and checks. I found it easy at
first to (epay the loans as they became
duo, and was foolish enough to raiso
more money than 1 really needed, and
to waste it.
“When you are sustaining your credit
by kiting it doesn’t make much differ
ence whether you add a little to the size
of your kite or not. I saw that another
clerk was worrying his life out in kiting,
and one day'l went to him and asked
him what load he was carrying. Ho
said $250. What, with discount and
protesting expenses and reckless borrow
ing beyond my needs, 1 had got mv
debt up to SI,BOO then, and I thought it
was a pity tho young fellow should bo
risking his situation and fretting him
self about a paltry $250. 1 decided to
put him out of his misery, and borrowed
another check of $250, and flew his debt
tiesido my own. 1 can’t tell you of the
hours 1 spent in working the uchemo.
“Every morning before the banks
opened 1 was flying around town bor
rowing friends' checks for two or three
days, getting loans of money at high
rates of usury, and trying to fix things
with tho notaries. And every day the
debffents larger, and the feat of flying it
more difficult. Fortunately, I was lucky
in a speculation, and was wise enough
to übo the monoy thus made iu paying
off every claim against mo, and getting
out of tho kiting business, If I had’i t
1 should have come to grief long before
this, for there is no such thing as aver',
ing a grand collapse some time or oilier
in kiting, unless you mako an outside
strike. Now'l look on and see other
fellows at the game. It’s tho same oh 1
story with every ono of them. Day
after day they go the round of banks,
notaries, friends, and Shyloeks, and a
more careworn and perplexed set of un
fortunates you can’t find anywhere.
They aro always at their wits’ end to
know whore tho next check is coming
from, and unless they have a good stock
of light-heartedness in their natures, as
I have fortunately, they will get wrinkled
aud gray in less than a year.”
LutrMemben of tho Legion of Honor.
[Pall Mall Budget.]
There are at present seventeen women
in France who have received the dis
tinction of the Order of tho Legion of
Honor. Tho last of thorn is Mmo. Bt.
J alien, ttie superior of the Sisterhood ot
Bt. Vincent and Paul, who has boon en
gaged at the Marseilles military hospital
for thirty years. The order is mostly
given for devotion to the sick and
wounded; Lady Pigott, for instance, be
sides several Frenchwomen, has recoived
the order as a reward for her services to
tho wounded in the Franco-German
war. But tho name of Kosa Bonhour,
artiste-pcintre, is also in tho list, and
we are told that Mme. Abioot was dec
orated for defending the house of the
maire of Oison, her husband, against
“armed men,” and that Mme. Kcgis,
who is the first decorated Frenchwoman,
earned her distinction in 1849 for “re
sisting the mob.”

enter the harbor past Morro castle,
and see before you a picture as beau
tiful as strange. Green hills are
crowned with ]ialrn trees aud banana

foliage here and there, are one-storied,
painted pink, or green, many of them
white. Boats having a single and
brilliantly colored awning at the stern,

shore.
Ores* Not Sleful Vanity.
[American Queen.]
Ruslcin is the first great writer who
has treated the subject of dress with
due gravity. He has shown us that a
serious study thereof is a needful
virtue, instead of a sinful vanity, and
that a harmonious and well constructed
gown is as much a work of art as a
picture or a statue. Neither can it be
argued that the work is mean, since it
is to adorn human beings, who are,
after all, nature’s masterpieces.
The London Globe says: “The higher
the civilization the later the dinner
hour.” In this country the lazier the
cook the later the dinner.
Warren Leland,
whom everybody knows as the successful
manager of the
Largest Hotel Enterprises
of America, says that while a passenger from
New York on board a ship going around Capo
Horn, in the early days of emigration to Cai
ifornia, he learned that one of the officers of
the vessel had cured himself, during the voy*
age, of an obstinate disease by the use o<
Ayers Sarsaparilla.
Sinco then Mr. Leland has recommended
Ayer’s Sarsaparilla in many similar
cases, and he has never yet heard of its fail
ure to effect a radical cure.
Some years ago one of Mr. Lkland’s farm
laborers bruised his leg. Owing to the bad
■tato of his blood, an ugly scrofulous swelling
or lump appeared on the injured limb. Hor
rible itching of tho akin, with burning and
darting (tains through the lump, made life
almost intolerable. The leg became enor
mously enlarged, and running ulcers formed,
disoliarging great quantities of extremely
Offensive matter. No treatment was of any
avail until the man, by Mr. Lkland’s direc
tion, wns supplied with Ayer's Sarsapa
rilla, which allayed the pain and irritatiou,
healed the sores, removed the swelling, and
completely restored the limb to use.
Mr. Leland has personally used
Ayers Sarsaparilla
for Rheumatism, with entire success; and,
after careful observation, declares that, in
his belief, there is no medicine in the world
equal to it for tho cure of Liver Disorders,
flout, the effects of high living, Salt
Rheum, Sores, Eruptions, and all the
various forms of blood diseases.
Wo have Mr. Leland’s permission to invite
all who may desire further evidence in regard
to tho extraordinary curative powers of
Ayer's Sarsaparilla to see him person
ally either at his mammoth Ocean Hotel,
Long Branch,or at tho popular Leland Hotel,
Broadway, 27th and 28th Streets, New York.
Mr. Lkland’s extensive knowledge of tho
good done by this unequalled eradlcator of
blood poisons enables him to give inquirers
much valuable information.
