EXPERT COUNTEEFKITIN G.
United States Detective W. C.
Bauer 10-day returned from Mem
phis,announcing the conviction of the
celebrated counterfeiter Martin Ogle.
A reporter this afternoon found De
tective Ilauer in hi* room surrounded
by piles of counterfeit bills, and look
ing over the tools with which the
counterfeiter accomplished his work.
To a reporter he explained the pro
cesses, which certainly displayed a
wonderful amount of ingenuity and
delicate workmanship.
Ogle had procured a genuine 910
hill and split it in halves, this being
in itself a remarkable operation. The
two sheets thug made were so Uiiu
that they were transparent. He
made a plate of copper and brass a
little larger than the bill, ami spread
one of the sheets on lopofit. With a
steel tracing pencil of bis own manu
facture be engraved through the
sheet its exact counter-part on the
plate. The other half was engraved
on a different plain in a similar man
ner, and then lie was ready tor print
ing his spurious money. This meth
od of workmanship looks very simple,
blit it is Hie first time it lias been done
bv a cotilerfeilcr, as it is almost im
possible to split the bill.
The method always before used is
as follows; The workmen took, say
a bill, and spread over it a picco of
transparent velaliuc paper, and traced
the figures of the former outlie lat
ter. The metal plate was next put In
use and was coated with a solution ol
of shellac, On this the gelatine was
pasted, and, when lorn otT it left on
the shellac the outlines of its figures.
By following these in the solution
they were also traced in delicate line
on the plate. The shellac then being
washed off the latter, they could be
cut lo the right depth and Hie coun
terfeiter was ready for his work.
Ogle's method obviated these three
•r four methods and rendered the
engraving on the plate far more
accurate, as the correctness of the
lines was necessarily lost through so
many transfers.
This man thus accomplished a
piece of work alone and unaided,
with tools of his own manufacture,
whan the national government paid
TTTW 100.000 for a steam machine to
do tho same thing. Detective Batter
showed Ogle’s tools which were lil
ted to rough wooden handles, hu,
possessed points sharp as steel. He
also dljplaycd the genuine hill split
in two sheets, and poe#!)/ trans
parent. He had on a ug?o several
packages of bills of Ogle'* manufac
ture amounting in all to 9300,000 in
tens twenties. They were all
on the Third National Bank of Cin
cinnati, but the new plates were
intended for the Queen City Bank.
“Ogle,"’said Detective Bauer, ‘•in
the first mail who has Issued any
spurious money during the last six
years, and he has shewn an almost
unexampled skill and astuteness. His
brother, who has been relumed to
•he Pennsylvania poniteutiar), knew
nothing about this workmanship, lint
was merely a kind of head servant to
Martin. The latter did all his work
on the flat boat, and scattered the
money chiefly at river points. Ho
turned over to mein all 9180.000 of
tbout the best counterfeiting 1 ever
