ONLY TWO LEFT.
Death of Hon. Jacob Thompson at
Memphis, Tuesday, leaves only two of
President Bcolianan’* Cabinet living.
That was the last Democratic Cabinet
before the Kepubtican party entered
upon its long tease of power. One of
the living member* of it i* Philip
Frank Thomas, who was Secretary of
the Treasury for afew weeks'in 1860.
He is at preterit a resident of Easton,
a small town on the eastern shore of
Maryland. The oilier member U Ho
ratio King, who was Postmaster Gen
eral a abort time. Neither Thomas
nor King made much of an impreasion
as a Cabinet officer, and there are
comparatively few people, perhaps
who know anything about them,
or remember that they occupied at
one lime prominent position* in the
government. It is a remarkable fact
that after leaving the group of aiates
incu who wore prominent in the very
history of (lie republic, only a small
number of our public men succeeded
in making such an impression upon
i heir generation as to stand out prom
inently in tlie country 's history.
Mr. Thompson was a man of much
more than average ability. At the
time of Ills death he was 75 years of
age. He was ouc of tbo most in
fluential members of Mr. Buchanan's
Cabinet, aud bad as much, it not more
than any other member to do mould
ing Mr. Buchanan's opinions on the
great questions which then agitated
the country. Mr. Thompson re
mained in the Cabinet uutil the Star
of the West sailed and then ho re
signed. Ho went to Canada In 1864,
aud the part ho played there In con
nection with the civil war in this
country attracted much addition.
Tlie changes in tlio post office ap
propriation bill lo go into effect the
Ist of July, are of considerable im
portance. Letter postage will bo
two cents for overy ounce or frac
tion thereof. Drop letters will bo the
same, except that whero free deliv
ery is not established tbe postage will
be one cent fer each ounce er fraction
thereof. The saiuo bill reduces the
newspaper postago when sent by the
publishers from the office of publica
tion, or when sent by nows agencies
from two cents a pound lo one cent
a pound.
Til* latest report made by the In
augural committee show that the re
ceipts from tbo tickets, privileges, etc.,
at the ball only lack about SIOO of
paying all tbo expenses, and that sub
scribers will got back about 99 cents
on the dollar. This is one hall which
ivas enjoyed as much by the sub
scribers as by any oiio else. Democrats
are evidently good financiers.
