Geo. H. Cral(f and Poat Office Inspec

ting piece of detective work. Last
week District Attorney Craig re
ceived a letter from Silas Smith, post
master at Langston. Ala., staling tliat
a man named W. W. Fondnm near
that place, on Sand Mountain, was
probably selling or tusking counter
feit money,and that be(6naith)had re
ceived letters from a distance asking
about Fondrcn, and enclosing letters
they had received tram him nfleri' g
to sell them counterfeit greenbacks at
$lO per hundred, many of the victims
• tiling thst they had sent their asoney
but had received nothing in return.
Postmaster Smith was immediately
summoned before the grand jury by
the District Attor ey.andlt was found
that Fondrcn was in receipt daily ol
large numbers of letter* from all por
tions of the United Stales and 0 nr
da. No witness had seen the conn
ter: i . bills,ami no ra-e could be made
for counterfeiting, lml the grand jury
under advice of the District Attorney
returned sn indictment against Fon
dren for fraudulent use of the mails.
The brother. John B. Folldren, was
not Indicted, n* there was no evidence
agatnsi him at the time. On Wednes
day last Inspector IN . (>• Halt'd
reached Huntsville, and after eon
aultlng with the District Attorney,
they set to work at ouce to capline
llie parties. A warrant of arrest
for* h wit It Issued for John B. Fondrcn
ami a capias for William W. Fon
dren under the indictment. Baird
then w rota Pondron a letter enclos
ing a ten dollar bill upon which lie
placed a private mark, forsloo of
greenbacks, andsigedntho name oi
‘•H. B. Allen,” and had the postmark
of Leesvillo. Fin., stamped upon tlie
envelope. Baird, in oompany with
Deputy Marshall John J. Hinds, left
Huntsville and reached Langston af
ter dark. The letter was de
livered to the Post-master with
Instruction* to put it Into Fon
droit’s mail. The next day Baird
went around the vlhuge of Langston
as n cigar drummer, all the time
keeping In sight of the post office un
til lie k>w Fondrcn get his mail. Then
with the Marshal and a guide they
proceeded to scale the mountain side
until they reached the Fondrcn resi
dence wlileh they found to be a dou
ble log cabin with hall bet ween which
had been inejosed with boards. The
guide rushed to tlio window and the
marshal and Baird to the door. John
B. Fondrcn jumped through the win
dow anil was caught by the guide,
while William Fondrcn rushed to the
door into the arms ot the Marshal.
Baird secured the mail and found the
letter he had written, with the $lO in
closed, ami other letters with
various sums, one from Canada,
inclosing $5. There wore over 1,600
other letters found in the room
which had ail contained various sums
and it estimated that the parlies have
realized several (hot.land dollars out
of their swindle. As soon a- the ex
citement of the arrest was over, Wil
liam Fondrcn said t# Baird: “Who
are you, anyhow ?’ Baird replied.
My name is Allen, front Florida,”
Firmlen replied, “Come for your
good l , did you? Well paid. 1
guess you've caught me and i'll
have to give it, up.” The priso

to Langston, where they mutinied all
night, and were brought to Huntsville
yesterday and lodged in jail. The

THE VI ANON C'OTTOM-HICKKK.
The Mason cotton-picker has not
been abandoned. The principle is a
new one, and time and practical work
in the field arc needad to develop and
apply it to the best advantage. It
was tested last fall from the opening
to the close of the crop; and it will be
still more freely tested this year, and
jis now anticipated that the ma
chine will be so far perfected this
year that it can be safely placed upon
the market for general use before
the gathering of Hie crop of 188 C-87.
Uradslrcet's has given special atten
tion te the subject and it expresses
tiie opinion that the machine is near
ly ready for common use.
The peculiarity of the Mason picker
is that it seizes upon the fiber, but
passes over leaves and bolls. This seem
ing impossibility D accomplished by
the points that seize upon the fiber
being placed just beneath the orifice
wlico they work. The projecting
fibers enter* a minute distance be
tween tbe points and the surface and
is seized and separated from the
plant. The stalks, leaves and bolls
glide over tlio surface without com
ing in contract with llie point* lv ing
immediately below ami tints escape
seizure or injury. The catching
points arc placed ill stems, or lin
ger* which gather the cotton as tlie
mule draws the picker tip and down
the rows, which Ihe machine strad
dles. While a largo number of the
stems enter euch plant, tlioy do not
jostle or tear it. The cotton that is
gathered, by a reverse is cast into
side receptacles prepared to receive it.
and the stems pass to do their work
in another plant. An average sized
machine has front lot) to 17.) stems
upon it, so that a sufficient number
pass into each plant to do the work.
As far as expet intents with t lie last
crop went, which were continued
into January, a lido more titan otic
half of the cotton was gathered in
one passage. By driving tip the row
again and back, seven-eights of tin
cot ton that was speti was picked.
Its condition was remarkably good,
but when frost had made the plums
brittle the cotton contained some
trash from the leaves which had tall
cn and adhered to the fiber on tin
open bolls. The machine where the
cotton was well opened, picked 339
pounds of sued cotton an hour, or
3,360 pounds a day. Of <t>ure these
trials showed de a'ls where improve
ment was possible, and some chan
ges were deterniinded upon in the
shape of the framework, the move
ment of the picking stems and the
movement and construction of tne
elevators which curry the cotton front
the receptacle to the pendent bags at
the bui k. The changes decided upon
will effect a large, increase of galln r
ing capacity, and insure the exclusion
of trash even in the last stages nf tin 1
crop.—Atlanta Constitution.
