According to the Chicago Tribune,
since the Ist of Janusrv, the number
of scoundrels lynched in various parts
of the country is9l), of whom !)(i were
male* and females, 5$ white and 41
colored. In detail the slates arc rep
resented as follows: Alabama li. Ar
kansas 1, Florida 2, Georgia 2. lowa 5
Kansas 3, Kentucky 3. Maryland 1,
Mississippi (i, Missouri ti, North Ca
rolina 2, Nebraska, 2, Ohio 3, Oregon,
2, Tennessee 7, Texas 31, Virginia 2,
West Virginia 2. In the territories:
New Mexico 2, Indian Territory 7,
Dakota 1, Montanua 3, Washington 1.
It may also be of interest to know
that of those 99 departed citizens 41
were lynched tor murder, 31 for
horse and cai tie stealing 14 for rape,
3 tor incendiarism, 2 for train wreck
ing, 2 for murderous assault, 2 for un
known reason and 1 for burglary.
These returns, it will be observed,
are for six months, and their signifi
cance will be ■apparent when it is
staled,that the number oflynelvings
was 198, which was an increase of 100
over 1883. The number of lynching*
thus tar in this year lias steadily in
creased month,s* that at this ratio I lie
’oial for the year will considcrbly ex
ceed 250. Hanging does not keep
anything like an oven pace with lyn
ching, though the volume of crime
for the first six months of this year is
far in cxecss of what it was last year
during the same period. Last year
there were 123 criminals hanged, but
tiiis ye: r thus far there have been hut
forty-two. At this ratio tlie number
of executions w ill he niu .li smaller
than in any year sineclß7s.
SHOT SEVEN TIMES.
The Fatal End of an Editorial Duet tn
Laredo.
A dispatch of ihetith from Laredo
says : At 10 o’clock last night, both
the Larcdocs were thrown into astute
of great excitement upon hearing
some twenty shots fired in rapid suc
cess in New Laredo. This excitement
was Intensified from the fad, general
ly known, that Jose Lopez Montalbo,
the cd.tor of El Ilarizonte, a Mexican
paper published in Laredo, had gone
across the river about sun down to
engage in a mortal combat with
young Feilro Arguindigni editor of
El Bravo, published in New Laredo.
After considerable difficulty it was
learned that Montalbo was shot seven
times and died within two hours,
whi r Arggimhgul was slightly
wounded. It seems, however, Hint
Montalbo was assailed by several
parlies during ihe fight. His re
mains were brought across i lie river
this evening, and were met by a great
crowd. Tlve editors had been indulg
ing violent personalities through the
columns of their papers for several
months past.
WHISKEY DID IT.
AVe find Ihe following from Con
yers in the Atlanta Constitution : Mr.
John AV. Treadwell, of this county,
was run over and killed last Saturday
night,at Richardson's crossing, about
three miles below here by a freight
train. Olio arm was nearly severed
and one leg was completely detached
from the body and the head and bow
els were considerably bruised. When
found the deiaelicd|leg still had the
hoot on it. He hurl been to Coving
ton during the day and was on his
way homo. It is supposed that lie
was drunk and went asleep on the
track, as whisky was smelled on him
when the coroner held the inquest,
lie left the house of his brother-in
law about seven o’clock and was kill
ed about nine.
Evidently he intended walking
home on the railroad track, but be
came. drowsy from his whi ky am |la : and
down. The inquest was held yester
day, and the jury rendered a verdict
in accordance with the above.
On last (Saturday evening lightning
struck Capt. J. 11. Hick’s barn and
killed one of Ids horses, besides it set
the barn on fire audit would ha\c
been burned up, but for the assistance
of some negroes that happened to be
near wiicn it occurred. It also struck
a tree about one hundred yards from
the barn and then struck the ground
between the tree and ttic barn. It
struck the ground in a cotton patch
and killed the cotton for 20 feet square,
looked as if it had been burnt by fire.
There were several other horses and
mules in tho barn struck, and strange
to say, it had no effect on them. The
horse that was killed was feeding in
the stall, will: ids head against the
side of the building, and this is sup
posed to be the reason that it had more
effect on him than the others. -

“ Gentlemen: My father resides at Glover,

a marvelous effect
Ayer’s Sarsaparilla
has had in his case. I think his blood must
have contained tho humor for at least ten
years ; but it did not show, except in the form
of a scrofulous sore ou the wrist, until about
five year* ago. From a few *pot* which ap
peared at that time, it gradually spread 60 ns
to cover hi* entire body. 1 assure you bo was
terribly afflicted, and an object of pity, when
he began using your medicine. Now, there aro
few men of his age who enjoy as good health
as ho has. I could easily name fifty persons
who would testify to tho facts in his case.
Yours truly, W. M. Phillips,'*
FROM THE FATHER: “^^s

Six months ago I was completely covered with

humor caused an Incessant and intolerable
itching, and the skin cracked 00 os to cauro
tho blood to flow in many places whonover
1 moved. My sufferings were great, and my
life a burden. 1 commenced tho uso of tho
Sarsafauilla in April last, and have used
it regularly inco that time. My condition
began to improve ’at onoo. The nores have
all healed, and I feel perfectly well in every
rospect being now ablo to do a good day’s
work, although 73 years of age. Many inquire
