like anew man after the first bottle, and have

Young John S. Wise has already
been in the dueling Held, though not
as often as his noted father. He had
tho nerve a few years ago to refuse to
tight a duel with Pago McCarty, of
Richmond, a bold thing to do in a
State whose people believe in the code.
McCarty was the editor of a cam
paign sheet and is the man who killed
Mordecai, a young society man ot
Richmond, in a duel, about ten years
ago. McCarty was badly wounded
in that encounter and lay fora num
ber of days between life and death.
Wise told McCarty plainly that he
would not tight him, that ho had a wife
and six children who would perhaps
lose their natural protector in such n
contest, while he, McCarty, was an
irresponsible Bohemian with no fami
ly ties. Wise was tor some years cap
tain or the Richmond Blues, a crack
military organization, and is unques
tionably Mahone’s ablest lieutenant.
IDEMOUALIZEU MONKEY.
A black faced, red shirted Italian
was the centre of a large composed
principally of childre i, on Crosby
street on yesterday afternoon. Over
his back was strapped a hand organ,
and under his arm protruded the head
of a diminutive monkey, which was
giving utterances to piercing cries of
pain. Whcu a gentleman asked the
man about l-rtu Italian he replied ;
“I took him to Central Park last
week. He has been no good since.’’
“Why not?”
“He saw the monkeys up there.
They were having a good tune and
no work to do. Since then ha will
neither dance or lake off his cap for
a cent nor climb the front of a house;
but I shall train him over again or
break his back.”
A Strange scene as told by the Ma
con Telegraph: Quite an nuusual
scene tronspirod in Justice Freeman’s
court yesterday morning. Mary Ilur
ton had her husband, Thomas Horton
arraigned on a warrant, charging
him with having abandoned her arid
his children. When tho case wus
called, the parties to the warrant sud
denly foil upon each other's necks and
embraced in open court. Between
smiles and tern's a reconciliation
lollowed, and nothing was left for
the court but to dismiss tbs warrant.
This was done, and the parties left
the office with light hearts and happy
faces. It was one of the most pecu
liar scenes ever witnessed in a court
room, and proved a novel and rath
er interesting way of disposing of a
case.
“Facts are stubborn things,” and
sufferers from chills and fever gener
ally find their complaint a very stub
born fact until they commence the
use of Ayer’s Ague Cure. That
medicine eradicates tho noxious poi
son from the system, and invariably
cures even the worst cases.
A Stubborn €:ue of Ncrofulu.
I have been afflicted with scrofula
from my infancy, and in consequence
have been a frail and delicate crea
ture. i might truthfully say that I
was raised chiefly on mercury and
potash. Those remedies for the time
being would dry u-> the fearful ulcers
with which I was afflicted but they
would return with greater violence. I
was the merest shadow as to form and
person. My digestion was all derang
ed and my existence was most wretch
ed. Everything that could lie done for
me was done, bat no permanent benefit
derived. At last a great luinorcaine
on my neck below the left ear. It in
creased in size until my head
was forced to the right shoulder and
in this ungainly and uncomfortable
position, I was compelled to carry my
head. The doctors decided that as it
was there it had to stay as long as life
continued, and for many years it did
remain. In March, 1884. at the sug
gestion of Colonel John Taylor I was
induced to try Swdt’s Specific. My
system responded to the medicine
promptly, and I began to improve
from almost the first bottle. That
fearful tumor has all disappeared,
and every appearance of tho disease
has left my person except a large
lump on the right side of my neck,
and that is disappearing rapidly.
From a fragile^little girl I have de
veloped into a healthy robust lady as
there is in the neighborhood. Swift's
Specific is the only remedy that has
over given me any permanent relief,
and I am in better health and weigh
more than I ever did in my life be
fore. My old friends scarcely recog
nize me since this wonderful change
lias been wrought in my appearance.
Mr gratitude is unbounded for what
this medcine has done for me.
