Senator Nesmith,of Oregon, recently
deceased, mar belneiuded within the
category of the poker fefctgs. It is
related that he played 4u a game of
poker on one occasion Ot Portland,
Ore.,continuously fornix weeks. Ben
Holiday and Rufe IngtfHs were in the
same game. At the commeneemdnt
of the seventh week it incidentally oc
curred to Nesmith ibeS he bad left
home for only a few days' sojourn at
Portland, and bud net provided bis
wife with suScieut money to last
longer. Perhaps she was starving,
or had been forced to beg food from
neighbors. The thought was mad
dening, and the ledger he dwelt upon
■he possible condition in which'bis
deserted fa sally might be placed
through Ids Lifatuation for pokerplay
ing the more moody he became. He
could stand the reflection no longer
and rising from his seat, exclaimed :
'Gentlemen, you must excuse me,
I am going straight home, possibly to
find Mrs. Nesmith starved to death.
I left her only |2O when I cam*
away expecting to return in a week.
Here I have been playing poker six
weeks and forgot all about her. This
is cruel. lam too wretched to play
longer and must go home at once.

true, but Heaven grant that Mri.

is, it fat my accursed fault.aud you are
partly responsible.
iiou Holiday, who had rather
play poker than eat, being loser iu the
game, became angry beocuee hi*
friend Nesmith inaiaitl Upon return,
ing home. He at once hlui ted out ia
bis rough wny :
••Nesmith, I don’t believe A word of
your iiifncrnal wife store. You’re
attend and want to jump the game.
Why don't you say to like a man and
net lay it ou your wife wife ? You
must take us for idiots,”
"Great Hod,” rejoined Nesmith,
"jump the game I jump the game!
when we have been Haying night and
day fur six tong week*, adjourning
only for a few hours’ steep! How
tong do yon expect a man to play be
tore be may decently Jump the game I
Gnese ass it ! play with inch a poker
hog at you again—you never know
sbeu you bnve got enough, and your
wile must die and be buried a hun

jump the game to attend her funeral!”
Away went No-mith in a towering
passion, u bile Ilafe InyillS who knew
Nesmith was sincere in the matter,
came near atrangllug himself with
suppressed laughter at Ben Holidays
impotent rage. The six weeks’ game,
therefore, broke up, and Ben Holiday
swore the biggest kind of oaths that
lie would get even with Nesmith some
day for “jumping the game.
