THE MORTGAGE t’KOl*.
While the corn crop of Georgia is
about tliado and tlio cotton is rapid
ly opening,especially in tho southern
hall ot tho Stale, the mortgage crop
is alsj fast approaching maturity.
’The cotton crop of 1885-6 may not
he the largest ever produced, but there
are indications that it will be a very
largo one. The question of gathering
and marketing it in good condition is
now an important one, as is also that
relating to the price the staple will
probably command. The prospect fbr
a good price is not now very llaUering,
but it is to be hoped that the outlook
will be better when the market fairly
opens.
It is believed I hat the area in Geor
gia and Florida planted in mortgages
1 the spring, estimated in
dollars and cents, was mialler
than it has been at any
time since the war. There arc thou
unds of mortaged crops in Iho Stale,
however, more than there ought to he
ho, and these mortgages have grown
and flourished, especially where Ihey
were given for supplies bought on
crtdil. or for money borrowed at fiom
Ito 1 1 4 per cent, per month.
There will probably ho few far
mers, comparatively, who will not he
able to gather their mortgages prot ty
early in the season, but it may bo safely
assumed that none ol those who have
a large mortgage crop will have much
profit loft after squaring off llip year’s
accounts.
W ill the Southern planters ever be
independent again ? This is a mo
mentous question. They never can
be so as long as they have to beg for
credit and mortgage tliolr land and
stock and crops to gel it.
A noted Georgia planter said a few
years ago that “a farmer in debt
was morally a slave, and if by any
misfortune lie was unable to pay his
debts when due he was regarded as a
convict.”
Let the Southern farmers gel out of
debt and resolve to stay out, and
Ihey will ho the most independent
and happiest people in the world.—
