IXItEUAKIItai DISCaVEKKIIS. The death of James W. Marshall the first discoverer or gold in Califor nia, an old, disappointed, poverty stricken man, furnishes another sad illustration of the fact that great dis coverers like great inventors, larelv reap any lasting or valuable reward. Marshall and his employer Colonel Sutter, fared alike in their failure to secure the wealtlt to which they were entitled, the one by right of discovery and (lie other by right of ownership of the land upon which the discovert was made. Other men rushed into the gold field, parceled out the land among themselves, dug out the prec ious medal it contained and went their ways long before Sutter and Marshall could find courts to lake cognizance of llteir claims. Tlic history of Colonel Drake, the discoverer of oil in our own Stale, furnishes a paraleli case to that ol Marshall and Sutter. Although his discovery ted to the enrichment ol thousands ot others, and to the devel opment ol an industry which in a quarter of a century has arisen from nothing to an annual Value of not less than sixty millions, Drake secured Homing from it and would have died a pauper but not for tiie pension ot fifteen hundred dollars a year paid him by the Stale for the last few years of ins life. It would be hard to explain why men who make famous and scovciiei'o so rarely profit by them. Doubtless in some instances the disco veriers are accidental and made by men without the übiiity to take advantage o/ their opportunity. The difficulty in the case of Marshall and Sutiel seems to have been the absolute want o( any law o.' means of enforcement if legal writes in tile newly acquired Territo ry at the time the discovery was made. The swarm of squatting goli hunters had every tiling their own way be cause tiiey outnumbered theorigninal owners of the land. When law re sumed its sway they had secured the gold and gone to the ends of the earth witli it. —Philadelphia Times. Lowell, Mass., furnishes the torii pcrancc people with material for the most effective anecdote of the century. Monday last a citizen of that town felt that he was obliged to have some liquor. Taking his baby in its car riage on a pretext of giving it an air ing,lie visited the nearest rumsliop and pawned the carriage-for a drink. Go ing to another place he confidential ly whispered to the barkeeper tliai he would sell him the child for $5 The offer was declined. The toper offered it for $3, and'them for $1.50. The of fer was not accepted, and, finally lay ing the child on the counter the fa ther said: “Well look here my friend, take the baby and give me one good, square'drink.” Lowell babies may not be tougher than babies are in oth er places, but they are certainly not a legal tender for drinks in that city.
