Carswell, D. D., will preach at the Methodist church to morrow morning. The Rev. Mr. Ousi.it will preach in the evening. , y .utiMli. 5 —■ Republican Meeting.— We learn that a meeting of negro Republicans will be held here, to-day, for the purpose of making nominations for the, Legisla turc and for county offices. We have heard several names suggested as prob able candidates, which we think hardly possible —but await developments. Colonel 11. 11. Jones. —This gallant gentleman, of the noble Telegraph Sf Met senger of Macon, made us a visit on Thursday last, To say we were pleased would not do justice to our feelings. Col. Jon rs is of the “old school typo of manhood, and makes one always feel glad to meet him, when and he will. Original. —Wo return our thanks to Judge John F. Lawson fora very large and “origiual Lawson watermelon.” We are quite sure the Judge would have felt satisfied as to the appropriateness of the person to whom the melon was presented had he witnessed the avidity with which we got on the outside of it. Bi.acksiiku. — The delegates selected at the Democratic meeting, last Satur day, a report of which will he found in this paper, left last Thursday night for Blackshcr. As the convention did not convene until 12 in. yesterday, it was impossible that we should hear aught of its proceedings before going to press. But we hope our county may be honor ed with the first nomination. Bask Ball. —We are informed that the Evening Star Base Ball Club, of Louisville, Jefferson county, has ac cepted an invitation from the Waynes boro 1 Club to a match game, to be. played at this place on Monday morn ing next. “Our boys” are sadly out of practice; however, we hope there is enough dexterity left in them to make the Stars twinkle, if not to eclipse them. — . ■ Thk Augusta Fair. —The third an imal fair of the Mechanics’ and Agricul tural Association of Augusta will com mence on Tuesday, October 22d, and continue five days. We are in receipt of its schedule of premiums, which is thoroughly complete. Iu this connec tion, we return thinks to the Associ ation's worthy President, 31 r. I*. J. Bkrckmaxs, for a complimentary iuvi tation to its grand entertainment. Golden Gourd Seed. —.Since cur notice of this species of corn, intro duced by Mr. E. A. Carter, he has received many letters of inquiry con cerning its merits. 31 r. C. desires us to answer them, generally, as follows: The corn was planted on the 15th of March; with two ploughings yielded fourteen bushels and one quart to the acre; there were no “nubbins,” but all full ears; and, without drying, was sent to mill tho first week in August. New Firm. —lt is with pleasure we call tlie attention of our readers to the card of Messrs. Jones, Norris & Cos., Augusta, Ga. This is anew firm ; unknown to us; hut must be perfectly reliable, endorsed, as follows, by the Edgefield, S. C-, Advertiser: As will be seen by reference to our business col* umns, two sons of our esteemed fellow citizen, of tbc llidge, Mr. Milton Nor ris, liave entered into the Grocery busi ness in Augusta’ Their copartner is 11. T. Jones, Esq., of Georgia. The firm name is Jones, Norris & Cos. As to the Norrises, they are steadiness and reliability personified. We bespeak for then, the constant and weighty remem brance of all Edgefield. ♦ [communicated.] Mr. Editor As the question asked by “A Soldier,” in your issue of the 7th Sept, inst., was fully answered by Gen. A. R. Wright., in a letter over his own signature, published sometime ago in the Chronicle Sentinel , of August a, Ga., I am of opiniou that no further considera tion of the matter is called for. But it seems it is desired that I answer myself, and for myself; and if “A Soldier” will place me on an equal footing with him self, by giving his name to the public, or to me privately, I will then accommodate him. Stephen A. Corker. JFaynesboro', Ga,, Sept. 13, 1872 f ! Changes in the Statutes of the State. The last LcgUtaturu made some im portant changes in the statutes which arc of general interest to all. First, as to tho law ot garnishment, the follow ing amendment has been made: That, from and after tho passage ot this apt. tho wages of no person in the employment of another shall be exempt from the process of garnishment when 4110 consideration of said debt is for board of himself or family. Next, £ to gaming of any kind in a y retail liquor house, or shop, or room, or rooms “connected thereunto.” The law as it now stands, is as follows : Sec. ). Re it enacted by the Oencrnl Assembly,'That from and after the pas sage of this act, if any retail liquor dealer, or clerk in the employ of such retail liquor dealer, shall knowingly permit or allow’ any person or persons to play at any game of cards or any game whatsoever in tho playing of which cards or dice are used, iu the house in which such retain dealer carries on his business of retailing spirituous liquors, or in any room connected therewith and under the control of such retail liquor dealer such retail liquor dealer or his clerk so offendiug shall, on conviction, bo punished as provided in section 4*255 of Irwin’s Revised Code. (Fine or imprisonment, or both.) Sec. 2. That if any person shall, for amusement or otherwise, play at any gainc of cards, or any game whatsoever iu the playing of which cards or dice | are used, in any retail liquor shop or house or any room connected therewith and under control of any retail liquor | dealer doing business iu such house or shop, such person so offending shall, on j conviction, be punished as provided in ■ section 4255 of Irwin's Revised Code. [ Another change is with refeVcnCe to \ using opprobrious words or abusive lan guage tending to cause a breach of the i peace, or the use of vulgar or obscene i language in the presence ot females. | Heretofore jurisdiction in such cases | has rested with magistrates, and is given iu section 4oOG of the Code, which sec- . tion has now been amended as follows : Provided that no Court m this'State j shall have jurisdiction to inquire into the offenses above set forth, except the ; Superior C tuit, upon presentment made j or iudictment found by the Grand Jury lof the county iu which the offense has j been committed. The trial of this class of cases, there- I . 5 ! fore, will hereafter rest exclusively with | tlie Superior Court. Sosthdrn Claims Commission - Seven hundred new claims have decn filed be fore the Southern Claims Commission during tlie month of August, making over sixteen hundred in all. Tlie claimants are hurrying up their papers to get them on record before tho expira tion of the time filing them as provided . for by Congress, so that they will be ■ J secure if Congress refuses to extend the time. —s N ttro-Gl vek rI nk E xplos ion.—Re cently a terrible notro-glycerinc cxplo- | 1 sion occurred at Rouseville, Pa., result- j ■ ing in tlie instant death of Mr. William 11. PayiiOj the torpedo agent at that place. From the Titusville Herald wo 1 gain the following particulars: “Mr. Payne was a partner of Mr. James Sanders, tlie agent for Roberts’ torpe does, and the firm kept a magazine on the Tolls farm about one mile distant i from Rouseville, where is constantly kept on hand a large quantify of the , explosive and dangerous material iu cans. “In the morning 3lr. l’ayne went to the magazine with a buckboaid and double team, for the purpose of procuring some nbro-glyeorinc and a torpedo. lie had gone about two-thirds ! of the distance, and had reached a point ( on the road about thirty rods cast of the Strong well, then whecan exploded, j 31r. Payne’s body was simultaneously scattered over an area of about twelve acres, the buckboaid was literally torn into splinters, but strange to say tho horses were not ■ killed, but ran away badly singedand wounded iu the haunch es. The explosion was distinctly beaid four miles off.” The total value of imports in the Apalachicola Custom House amounted in 1871 to 810, of exports $2,349. To take care of this vast trade, tho govern ment paid out $3,850 to one collector, one deputy collector, aud four boatmen. This is ecomonty with a vengeance. There are only eleven oaudidates for Congress from the Fourth district.' An liiluiml *c:i Tlutc Yield* Not 1’ |> Us Home twelve or fourteen persons have been drowned in Lake Tahoe within the past ten years; none of the bodies have over been recovered. Superstition ever ready to weave a sentiment from nature’s laws, asserted that there was a doubtful mystery in the non-rceovery of the drowned ; that, in fact, a monster had its abode in this fresh water sea, and that the bodies all passed into its capacious maw. The true explanation of this mystery never has been given. The non-appearance of the bodies is due to three causes. The fiVst is, the gicnt purity of tho water and its conse quent lack of buoyancy. Drowning is very easy iu it for this reason, though I have not, while-swimming in it, found any more than ordinary difficulty iu sustaining myself. The second and main cause is due to the great eolduess of the water. Even at thus, the warmest sea son, the surface water is as oold ns ihc drinker desires it to be, but it is warm there compared with its temperature at the depth of 100 or 200 feet. It Is as cold there as the arctic heatof an iceberg. When a body sinks in tho lake to tire depth required it is frozen stiff. Tjte process, of course, preserves it, so that the gas which originates from decay iu other water is prevented, aud distension checked. Tln> body is thus kept in a £tate of greater specific gravity than the • water in which it is suspended, and | thereby prevented from rising to tfis surface. The third .cause lies ip the ! great pressure of tlc pfe water on tino thing which is sunk to a great depth iu it. Corks placed on deep sea nets are ! pressed down”in a week to half their , size; aud otffe of the oldest residents of the lake, expresses the belief that, by | the time a mau a body has been suspccd-i 1 ed for a week at a depth of about 200 feet (it is not likely that it ever roaches ’the cavernous aud almost fathomless bottom of the great lake), the compress ■ sion of the water has reduced its size to ' that of a child’s. Doubtless the idea | of unconfiued suspension in such a “world of water” is not a pleasant oue to com | template; but to be pressed into a solid mass, nnd suspended in a liquid ceffin of ice temperature, is quite as phasaut as interment and mouldering in tiic ground. —San Francisco Bulletin. POLITICAL NOTES. John O. Thompson, Esq., has beep lyuuinatcd for the from Piker! county. ? John B. Roper and R. A. S. Free inan were nominated for the Legislatujc from Merriwether comity. The Grantitcs are giving up. The New York 'Times says: “Noise and lying cannot long deceive the American ' people.” | John T. It art aud M. W. Willingham were nominated for the Legislature by the Democracy of Oglethorpe, on the 3d instant. General Young was re-noiuinatcd by : the Congressional Convention at Car j tersville for the Seventh district, on the forty-third ballot. While a Democratic club were in procession on the 20th ult., at New Or | leans they were fired into, and for a time great excitement prevailed. COTTON MARKETS.
