day, and in the afternoon, at 2 o’clock, of Friday
before the 3d Sunday in each month.
SATURDAY, MARCH 8, 1873.
TEMPERANCE.
The intemperate use of ardent spirits
has resulted in more misery to the
human race than all the other destruc
tive ageota combined. Four ye*r r
bloody war filled the land with
anguish of widowhood and the misery
of orphanage; but the tocsin of war has
ceased to be sounded, and many, as they
dwell on the memories of the past, pray
that they may never be subjected to
the p rHs and sufferings of another war.
War has ceased to he waged with fire
and sword, it is true; yet it is waged,
and that most effectually, by “Kiug
Alcohol./ With noiseless tread and
stealthy step he approaches his subjects
—not in uterslral array, but in their in
dividual weakness he overcomes them,
waves his dark banner over once happy
homes, and with bis rod of power strikes
every glitteri: g star from their firma
ment of hope. With joy, therefore, do
we bail the tidings that troops are being
mustered in every part of tlie world,
almost, to prevent the further ruin and
ravage of this fell destroyer of human
hopes and happiness
Our town was visited on la3t Tuesday
by the Grand Lecturer of the State of
Georgia for the Independent Order of
Good Templars, to-wit: the ltcv. W.
L. Atkinson, who delivered a lecture
to a small audience on Tuesday night
in the Presbyterian church. As this
worthy gentleman is so well and exten
sively known throughout the State, wc
forbear any comment on his character
as a lecturer, further than to say that
his effort was a signal, yea, marvelous
success, resulting as it did in the organ
ization of a “Lodge of Good Templars”
iii the town of Waynesboro’. The lec
turer Laving quite a number of appoint
ments to fill in rapid succession could
not remain long enough to iustal the
officers of the Lodge; this wifi, how
ever, be douc at an early day, W e are
torced to admit that, in our bumble
opinion, this, system of “temperance re
form’' has in it an element essential to
suceess, which all of its predecessors
have lacked, to-vrit: the life time per
petuity of its obligation and in the
ratio, therefore, fbat effort is made to
shorten the duration of the obligation
does it impair the utility of the institu
tion as a system of temperance reform.
It is our earnest desire that our worthy
friend may be as successful everywhere
as be has been hero, until bo shall see,
as the result of his labors on bis mission
of mercy, many Luudrods and thousands
panoplied in the armor of Good Tem
plars, advocating the cause aud practic
ing in their lives the principles upon
which the Order Is established, aud
carrying the sunshine of joy anJ glad
ness to many darkened households.
The following are the uames of the
officers of the Waynesboro 1 Lodge:

A London detective put his head into
an omnibus one day just as it was start

swell mob iu this ’bus. Thereupon a
grave-looking old geutleman with eye
glasses and a -gold-headed cane hastly
got out, saying, “If that’s the case I
won’t go in this ’bus.” . lie was followed
by a clerical looking gentleman with a
white choker, who remarked that he
wouldn’t ride iu such company. And
then the detective closed the door and
shouted to the driver, “All right; drive

Few people realize how mauy acres
are unoccupied in the great West.—
There are eleven Territories, two or
three of which’are twice or three times
as large as all of New England, and it
is a small territory that is not at least
ten times as large as Massachusetts.—
Colorado is thirteen times as large as
Massachusetts, while Dakota and Ari
zona are half as large gain as Colorado.
The eleven Territories contain over one
billion and a quarter acres, exceeding
by neatly two hundred thousand square
miles, the aggregate territory of all the
present admitted States of the Union.
The Territory of Alaska contains 369,-
529,600 acres.
The Bank of England covers five
acres of ground and employs nine hun
dred clerks, and should a clerk be too
old for service, he is discharged on half
pay for life. There are no windows on*
the street. Light is admitted through
open courts; no mob could take the
bank, therefore, without cannon to bat

the center of the bank has fifty dials at

in the court, and engines in perfect

Two susceptible beiDgs iu a Balti
more jail lately fell in love with each
other all Jhe way across the corridor
that separated the two wings of the
building, and carried on a courtship by
signs. As soon as they were released
they were married, and the happy man
found himself in possession of . widow
with several children and a snug little
home. His first attempt to interfere
with those children produced a remon
strance with a flatirou. Soon after he
found it agreeable to abscond with his
wife’s little hoard of money. This was
a denouement quite iu accordance with
the fitness of things as the woman had
been committed to jail as a common
scold,, and the young man as a thief.—

OFFICE OF T
Tilf Cokfidkratk Mokcmkst’l A.of Qa >
Augusta, Ga., January 4th, 1873. )
WE are aware that a second postpone
ment of the distribution of the shares
of the Confederate Monumental Association
of Georgia will dissatisfy some of tjie ticket
holders. Providence has inflicted upon al
most every section of our country, for the
last month, the severest weaßher that has
been known for many years. The highways
of trayel.in many secijpqs have been stop
ped. Communications between neighbor
hoods have been interrup’ed. People have
been compelled to keep close at their homes.
One Agent writes: “The postponemen
is so short that owing to the bad weather it
will be impossible for me to a : d you as I
expected-" A State Agent informs us that
“the contribution from his State will he
cut down to a small amount by the inclem
ent weather, and the shortness of time.”
One Agent stated to us in person that there
was many who wished to subscribe—that
he had not been able to see in consequence
of the extreme bitternss of the weather.
Another Asent declined to act longer, as
the time was too short to obtain ti o desired
results in his State. We might quote from
other letters to show that complaint has
lieenmade; that we sought expedite ti e
drafting by inadequate time. We frankly
confess that we desired to close the etTo: t
we have basin making. The object sought
is a grateful one. We have been influenced
to hold on by our desire to ho-tor the mem
ory of personal relatives and friends, as well
as their lost and devoted comrades. We
use the occasion to add that we have in no
small degree been influenced to continue
our efTorU to protect the credit of our State
and section. We look to r linen 1 less vestal
fire, without which, their < ■ sou: no

most sacred enterprise. We as,, uis ticket
holders to give us their confiut .e. 'V e
ask them to rely upon our judgments for
another brief period. We know better than
they do the neeessiiv for a little more
If any one shall say this additional postpone
ment violates our pledge, all that we iu ,<*
to say is, the South is not yet so represent#!',
as to appear creditably before t lie country
and the world. When we honestly tell you
that, will you not rather thank than con
demn us for the delay, in addition to the
difficulties already referred to, we may
properly add that for weeks past the ex
citement of canvassing for county offices,
some of which are lucrative, have directed
attention from this effort to do garateful
aud patriotic work. These elections ate
over. These excitements are rapidly pass
ing away. Our people can now have time
for reflection. They will now move freely ;
come to the tombs of their martyrs, stretch
ed on their shields in| wakeless steep, and
make their offerings for perpetual remem
brance.
We ttrial no one will he dissatisfied, but
that all will urflte wjtfi us in saying that the
sepulchral honors of the dead should not be
marred by impatience or selfish considera
tions. Whether we look to the InUtlq-flehl
or the new made grave, onr heroes are
wreathed with the honors of dying patriots
We now publicly pledge and solemnly aver
that tiie distribution shall take place on the
THIRD DAY OF APRIL, 1873, D. V.
On that day the curtain will fell upon
ihis most holy enterprise, and we trout the
people will enable us to [irtsent ari exhibit
that will be more satisfactory than we could
make ou the 18th insl.
