BT JULIA M. HOLMES
No word, no souud! 0, r reach
The raptnrp that the silence keeps
In her enchanted silver deeps—
Deeper than clearest thought or speech;
Or could I touch the tiny thrills
That stir the heart of one sweet song,
The ecstacy that lingers long
Beyond the wildest, maddest trills;
Or catch the beauty of ono beam
That glorifies the day and night,
Ethereal spirit of tho light,
Imprisoned in eacli golden gleam.
A flash, a thrill, and it is flown !
0, could I grasp and hold awhile
The tender glory of a smile,
The music of a loving tone;
And something dearer that I found,
And sweeter than the sweetest word,
The music that was never heard
Or syllabled by song or sound ;
A joy boyond ou" touch or sight,
A something tenderer than tho tone,
And finer than has flashed or flewn,
The silent soul of a delight.
Then might I one sweet secret say,
Then mortal eyes might watching see
The glory that passed by with thee,
And vanished with a summer day.
Gen Jell'. C. Davis, the Hero of
tliet.Lava* Beds.
HOW HK TREATED SOME SOUTH CAROLINA
LADIES.
The Chester (S. C.) Reporter says
this distinguished warrior who has late
ly succeeded at tho head of several re
giments of Federal troops in capturing
Oapt. Jack and his handful of Modoc
warriors, has a fame in that section of
tbs country. It says :
It is notone that a warrior would
envy ; but such as it is ho should have
the benefit of it in this tho hour of his
glory. He was as officer in Sherman’s
army that swept through this State in
1865. Whether he commanded a corps
or a division we do not recollect, nor is
it material to know. As the army of
tho North approached the line of Ches
ter county it came upon tho home of
Mr. John Douglas, in Fairfield county.
A Courier came to this houso and de
manded a room for the headquarters
of Gen. Jeff. C. Davis. He brought
with him a carpet, which ho put down
in the room, and other comforts aud
conveniences for his commander. Soon
afterwards Gen. Davis arrived and took
possession of the quarters that bad been
prepared for him. Mrs. E—, tho daugh
ter of Mr. Douglass, aud the wife of
llev. T. W. E—, who was rosidiog in
the house and taking care of her aged
father, appealed to him to pro toot the
place. He assured her that he would
do so, and told her to paek up the ar
ticles that she deemed most valuable
aud deposit them in tho room that he
occupied, and that he would be person
ally responsible for their safety. She
did so, packed up in trunks everything
that she deemed of special value, and
placed it in his room. When he left
the house she went into the room to re
cover her valuables and found that the
trunks had been broken open and every
thing that was Worth carrying off had
been taken away. This is the hero of
the Modoc war. * These facts can bo
established by witnesses whoso credi
bility no man would dare gainsay.
-.
A book agent recently invaded a
snug cottage in Pittsfield, Mass., where
he found a bright-looking little woman
sewing by the window. So he began
to descant volubly on the merits of the
book which he had for sale. This he
kept up for half an hour, and as the
little woman made no answer, he con
cluded that he had found a customer.
Efe handed her the pea which he had
ready for to mako her subscription;
whereupon, instead of putting her auto
graph on tho list, she wrote upon a
sorap df paper from her workbox. “Ime
defe and dum.” It was too much for
the disappointed man, and he evacuated
the cottage without saying another
word.

Prospectus for 187d —Sixth Year,
THE ALDINE,
An Illustrated Monthly Journal, universally admitted to
be the
Ikprescntative and Champion of Ameiican Taste.
Not for Male In Hook or News Stores.
TIIE ALDINE, whilo issued with all tho
regularity, lias none of tho temporary or timely
interest characteristic of ordinary periodicals
It is an elegant miscellany of ptiro, light, and
graceful literature ; and a collection of picturos,
tho rarest, specimens of artistic skill, in black
and white. Although each succeeding number
affords a fresh pleasure to its friends, the real
valuo and beauty of The <Aldine will bo most ap
preciated after it lias boon bound up at the close
of tho 3’ea r. hilo o*hor publications may claim
superior chonpncsa a red with rivals of a
similar class, The Alainc is a unique and original
conception—alono and unapprouenod—absolutely
without competition in price or character. The
possessor of a complete volumo cannot duplicate
tho quantity of fine papor and engravings in any
other shape, or numbor of voluuios for ten times
its cost; and then, there are the chromos, besides!
ART D EPARTMENT.
Notwithstanding the increase in the price of
subscription last Fall, when The Aldine assumes
its present noble preportions and representative
character, tho edition jras more than doubled
during tho past year; proving that tho Ameri
can public appreciate, and will support a sin
cere effort in the cause of Art. The publishers,
anxious to justify the ready confidence thus
demonstrated, havo oxortod thoinsolvos to the
utmost to develop and improvo tho work; and
tho plnns for the coming year, ns unfolded by the
monthly issues, will asteuish and delight even
the most sanguine friends of The Aldine.
Tho publishers are authorised Urtinnounce do
signs from many of the most eminent artists in
America.
In addition, The Aldine will reproduce ex
amples of tho best foreign masters, selected with
a view to the highest artistic success, and great
est general interest; avoiding such as have be
come familiar, through photographs, or copies
of any kind.
The quarterly tinted plaies, for 1873 will re
produce four of John S. Davis’ inimitable child
sketches, appropriate to the four seasons. Theso
platos, appearing in tho issues for January,
April, July, and October, would be alono worth
the price of a year’s subscription.
The popular featuro of a copiously illustrated
"Christmas” number will bo continued.
To possess such a valuable epitomo of the art
world at a cost so trifling, will command the
subscriptions of thousands in every section of
tho country; but, as tho usefulness and attrac
tions of The Aldine can bo enhanced, in propor
tion to tho numerical increaso of its supporters,
the publishers propose to make “assurance' doubly
sure,” by the following unparalleled offer of
Premium Cliromos for 18T3.
Every subscriber to The Aldine, who pays in ad
vance for the year 1873, will receive, without addi
tional charge, a pair of beautifnl oil cliromos, after
J. .T. Hill, the eminent English painter. The pic
tures, entitled "The Village Belle,” and “Crossim*
the Moor,” are 14x20 inches—are printed from 25
different plates, requiring 25 impressions and lints
to perfect each picture. The same cliromos aro
sola for S3O per pair in the art stores. As it is the
determination or its conductors to keep The Aldine
out of the reach of competition in every depart
ment, tlio chromos will be-fqund correspondingly
ahead of any that can be offered by other periodi
cals. Every subscriber will receive certificate,
over the signature of the publisher ■ uarantecing
that the chromos delivered shall uuai tithe
samples furnished the agent, ort i • < w ill be
refunded. The distribution of picture fgrade,
free to the subscribers to a live doll i. periodical,
will mark an epoch in the history of Art; and,con
sidering the unprecedented cheapness of the price
for The Aldine itself, the marvel falls little short of
a miraclo, even to those best acquainted with the
achievements of inventive genius and Improved
mechanical appliances. (For illustrations of theso
chromos, see November issue of The Aldine.
The 1 .itcrary Department
wi l continue under the, care of Mr. RiciiAan Ben
hy Stoduabd, assisted by the best writers and poets
of the day, who will strive to have the literature of
The Aldine always in keeping with its artistic
attractions.
TERMS—SS per aminm, in advance, with Chromos free.
The Aldine will, hereafter, bo obtainable only by
subscription. There will be no reduced or club
rate; cash for subscriptions must be sent to the
publishers direct, or handed to the local agent,
