CARLET, DUCK k CO,
Yet strangely does the farmer deal
With forms of rare poetic beauty;
Their high enchantment not to feel
He deema a kind of rustic duty.
Sun, aky and cloud, frost, wind and rain.
In one brief word he groups together—
Their worth to cotton, grass and grain
la all included in the— Weather!
The seasons which to most impart
A hint for smiling, or for weeping
Awake no passion in hia heart,
Except for planting, tilling, reaping.
Diurnal changes—night and day
So rich to sight and contemplation—
Pass him, unheeded, save to away
Hia meals and rest and occupation.
The very crops he lovee to rear—
Poetic essence fills their being—
The stem, the leaf, the bloom, the car.
All teem with beauty past hia seeing.
Ali! noble is the farmer’s toil!
His fruits priceless boon aud blessing;
But what he gather* from the aoil.
Is not most worthy of possessing.
A subtle beauty, sweet and fair,
Which nothing can suDdue or shatter;
Forever floats on earth and air
And clings to every shape of matter.

THE HISTORY OF THE ASIATIC CHOLERA
is simply as follows: It has long been endemic in
India. It first made its appearance in Europe in 1831,
and tbe following year crossed tbe Atlantic and ap
peared in the United States. It visited many, perhaps
all, our large seaboard and river cities, almost decima
ting some of them, and took ita departure until 1834,
when it again returned with increased malignity. It
again visited these shores in 1847-8, since which time
it has been more or less prevalent in certain parts o f
the country. It has now, doubtleaa, become endemic
amongst us.
SYMPTOMS.
The incipient symptoms are generally
marked by a premonitary diarrhoea, attended
with occasional nausea, slight cramps and heaviness
about the bead. In other cases the disease i* ushered
in suddenly with violent vomiting and purging, not of
bile, aa is the case in common cholera, but of a rice
colored fluid, with painful aud intolerable spasms of
the abdominal aud other muscles. The pulse soon
begins to fail; tbo skin is cold and bathed with cold
clamy perspiration ; tbe features are sunken and col
lapsed ; the urine is entirely suppressed ; the vomit
ing and purging constantly grow worse; the powers
of life failed, the patient grows anxious and restless,
while death with steady steps hastens to c»ose the sad
drama.
But most important of all ia
