Eli Perkins on Caesarism. ENOCH MORGANS SONS
Eli Perkins Las found the humorous, or,
rather, burlesque, side of Caisarism, and pro
sects it to his readers as follows:
To the Editor of the Daily Graphic:—
Caesar the tyrant moved down from Luke
George nnder the cover of last night’s dark
ness, and captnred Saratoga. He was ac
companied by Mr. Ctetar, Miss Nellie Cirsar,
two little Caesars, and a few attending min
ions. Some were bcnad in chains, others,
including General Pontifex Maximus Bab
cock, had blood-marks on their faces and
armor. Several heralds appeared in front
with lances, while a crowd of captives in
iron cages were left in the depoL
As the imperial party moved up the steps
ol Congress Hal), the bloodthirsty President
was noticed to wear a tin crown set with
diamonds; also sandals. The people gene
rally fled with fear and consternation. Gene
ral Babcock was ordered to capture General
Banks or Senator Feufcon, aDd bring them be
fore the insatiate tyrant, who instant!}’ cut
off their heads. Keverdy Johnson, being
blind in one eye, remained. Ciesar advanced
toward him, scowled through the eye-holes
in his helmet, and remarked, as he seized hiiu
by the hair:
“Old slave,” see he, ride, visigh,
• uni dig the taters!”
** Vieigh versa, nonposi coini talers," replied
Mr. Johnson in the dead languages.
Pontifex Maximus Babcock and the execu
tioners now seized the ex-Senator, with sev
eral hundred women und children, and led
them into the royal presence, when the cruel
tyrant put out their eyes and threw tht m up
the eave-spout with his own hands.
On entering the dining room, at the sound
of the trumpet, Caesar ordered all the plates
uncovered in honor of his presence. Then,
while turniug his imperial glances upon the
colored waiters, he ordered them to throw
the guests out o! the windows. At the same
time he directed Robert Jackson, the head
waiter, to kueel at his feet, while Pontifex
Maximus placed upon his head a laurel crown.
Then the tyrant struck him with a spear eight
times, saying :
“I, Ciesar, pronounce and appoint you King
of tne Cannibal Islands and Consul to the in
ternal city of Chicago.”
“Quosque, tandem ahutere patient ia nostra 0!
t'.vsar?*’ remarked Congressman liulbarn,
kneeling and wringing his hands.
“Arise, O, Conscript Father; I can not lend
yon $4,'* rep’ied Cnc sar, cutting off his legs
and arms, and laving his bands in the warm
blood.
This morning, after Csesar, the little (’.rsars
and Mrs. Ceesar had devoured several children
for breakfast, the royal tyrant ordered Ponii-
lex Maximus Babcock to put William Leiarnl
in irons, pump Congress Soring dry, and se-tl
:t up with sealing wax: and then he put on
his breast-plate and armor, and, armc.l with a
cross-bow, proce;ded to the Indian encamp
ment
“Bind Fernando Wood and Governor War-
moth to yonder tree, I would shoot at a
mark,’ ordered his Imperial Highness. Then
draw ing the bow, he shot fifty or sixty arrows
through Feinindo Wood and Mr. Warmoth.
Discovering Mr. W. S. Groesbeck, who had
climbed up a tree to get out of his reach,
Ctcsar shot thirty-six arrows through him,
and then ordered the tree to be cut down.
However, Mr. Groesbeck made his escape—
an arrow escape. He fled—the arrows sticking
in him— to Spalston Spa, where he now ex
hibits himselt as 8t. Sebastian in the daytime
and lets himself oat as a hat-rack ot nights.
Returning to the Imperial palace, Ca sar
ordered his chariot, price $4, and was driven
over to Cedar Bluff, on the lake. At the
sound of the trumpet Mrs. Meyers appeared.
“Kill and instantly cook, on the gridiron, a
tin pan full of black bass, woman, or die,”
shouted Crrsar. He also remarked that peo
ple would live longer in that house if they
brought— instantly brought—a basin full of
atawred potatoes.
The potatoes were brought.
After killing Mrs. Meyers’ little boy and
cutting the throat of the bar tender, tho ty
rant returned to the xoyal palace—price $5 —
and ordered Gov. Dix to produce Commodore
Vanderbilt
“ Shackle and chain him to the cowcatcher.
Pontifex,” said Caesar* “ he shall flag his own
train.'* Then pardoning Postmaster Judson,
and ordering the convicts in Saratoga jail set
free, the bloodthirsty tyrant smote his breast,
bit off a woman’s ear, placed his left heel on
Mayor Mitchell’s neck, and left for Long
Branch with bis galley slaves and bloody
cohorts.
Alas! for the liberties of the oppressed,
lown-trodden people !

The Stokes Case.
HOW MCS. BENTON, THE IMPORTANT WITNESS
IN THE STOKE8 CARE, WAS CAUGHT.
New York World, 8ept. 11.
Assistant District Attorney Allen and Su
perintendent Marsell sealed the lips of the
officers who arrested Mrs. General Benton;
but the following facts may be relied oo: The
hflnse where she resided, at the corner of
Fifty-first street and Lexington avenue, was
hired by her about a year ago as a rendez
vous for Mrs. Benton’s Washington friends.
Mrs. Benton, although grcatlv in fear of
being recognized, paid frequent visits
to the capital and to various places in Lou
isiana, her native State, but observed
the utmost secrecy in going from and return
ing to New York. When in this city she
rarely went out, aud on such occasions was
closely veiled. As soon as tho matter was
placed in the hands of the police by the Dis
trict Attorney, detectives Tolly and Dilks
were entrusted with the case. They hud no
knowledge of her whereabonis, and could
only identify her by a portrait they had in
their possession. By means at present un
known they traced u woman uho resembled
the portrait to Fifty-first street and Lexing
ton avenue, and hiring a room in an opposite .
house they watched for the witness. Monday '
morning they were sore that Mrs. Benton
lived where the suspected woman was seen to
enter, and observed extra vigil
ance till about 1 P. M., when they
went to the house, rang tho bell, and were
admitted. The servant stated that the lady |
they were in search of was oat, but the ofli- j
cers refused to believe her, and insisted on i
seeing her. The servant inquired their husi- '
ness, but they refused to divulge its nature, j
and took possession of the parlor. The ser
vant threatened to fend for the police, but
got laughed at for her pains, as the officer ou
poat had been notified that the detectives
were at work, and another detective was in
the street watching the house. Various tricks
were tried to get the detectives out of the
house, but all to no purpose, and about six
o’clock they managed to get to Mrs.
Bren tons apartments and arrest her.
Mrs. Benton was highly iudigouut,
and for an hour denied and threatened,
while a General iu the United States
Army, who was visiting Mrs. Benton on some
business connected with the Washington lob
by, menaced the officers with all sorts of
pains and penalties. Finally, the officers,
knowing the crafty nature of their prisoner,
resolved on stopping all night in the bouse,
and, in spite of Mrs. Benton's protestations,
one detective sat in a chair and the other
stretched himself across the door-sill. The
General, at Mrs. Benton’s request, remained
in the room, and Mrs. Benton took possession
of a lounge, and thus the night passed. Tues
day morning Mrs. B. listened to reason, nnd
consented to accompany the officers, who took
her aud her brother, a lad of eighteen, to the
Central Office and thence to the District At
torney's office, where she was coamiitred in
default of $5,000 bail to the House of De
tention ck ii witness. The detectives were
titty cou>*ecutivH hours on the case, aud ate
nothing from Monday morning till Tuesday
afternoon.
