ject to Chili, but to all intents and purposes
independent. It is now fifteen years since
an enterprising Frenchman, one M. de Tou-
nens, formerly practising at the bar, con
ceived the idea of paying a visit to Araucania.
Being a man of considerable energy, no
time was lost in putting the idea into
execution, and before many days had elapsed
he found himself at the end of his journey and
in the land he wished to be. He quickly saw
that the country possessed every requisite for
becoming a prosperous and wealthy Slate, but
unfortunately just at that time a funous war
was ragiDg amongst rival chiefs, each trying
to make himself supreme for the time being.
M. de Tounens, having decided upon making
Araucania his adopted country, exerted him
self in bringing about a reconciliation between
the contending parties, lor which his previous
profession as a barrister eminently qualified ;
him. The task he had set himself was not !
so ea-ily accomplished as he had at first im-
agintd. He met with many rebuffs lrorn the
factious chiefs, but, nothing daunted, he still i
persevered, and ultimately peace between the :
