Of course, this produced a howl from the
holders of the bogus bonds, and others iu
Georgia and clsehwhere whom they could en
list in their cause by heavy fees, or a division
of the spoils of their bonds could be made

was raised that the State would be ruined,
that her credit was gone, and she would never
again be able to sell a bond or borrow a dol

watching every event, came forward with the
proposition that if the Legislature would le

would take them at ninety cents iu the dollar,
and lend ns on them as much money as we
wanted, pay all onr debts, and lift us out of
tbe mire and raise the credit of the State o!

summation was devoutly to be wished."
Not knowing Vrliat else to do, several of our
best citizens, members of the Legislature,
and others, leaned eagerly toward it, and
many earnestly favored the proposition, or
guing that we bad better pay what we had

the State's credit should be depreciated. At
this juncture (fortunately for us, ns it has

of Ilepresentatives, prepared and introduced
a bill, which was parsed, as an experiment,
and tbe proposition of the bondholders was
pretermitted until the next session. That bill
authorized the issue of twelve hundred thou
