The Ashantee War.
rnTiSa OCT THE EXrZDITIOX.
Tee latest English mail tupplies accounts
<: ibe progress of the expedition against re-
lra :torj Ashantees. The Lords of the Admir
alty have chartered another large vessel, the
King Bonny, to convey provisions and other
.-tores to the Gold .Coast for the forthcoming
' rpedltion. and she will arrive at the Royal
Arsenel, Woolwich, next week, making the
fourth ship fitted out at the same place ior
the expedition. The Adela, which has nearly
< • mpleted her lading, is a long and narrow,
hut deep and roomy ship of 750 tons burden,
and from the large quantity of stores which
La^e been put on board her, as well
as from her appeiratce in the water,
; is evident that she is already well freighted.
>Le >, however, taking cn board 150
ton- coals for her engines, and to-day she
~u : ; embark 100 tons of gunpowder: but
barge loads and wagon loads of stores, espeei-
:dJy “ship-bread” or biscuit, continue to ar-
-\e for conveyance in her, and some of the
people concerned for the safety of the ship
: re beginning to get anxious. The policy of
•-ending out such a large quantity of provis
os two months before the troops who are to
oust.me them is also discussed, but iz does
not appear that any other stores which are
.kely to be more urgently required have been
left behind in consequence. The ship has on
board sufficient taupaulin to cover up the
yrevisions when they are landed, and several
Lip loads more wiil have to be sent out be-
:ore Sir Garnet Wolseley will be satisfied that
army is adequately victualled for the
march forward. In addition to
THE STOKES
already enumerated, the Adela yesterday took
:j bo. rd several tons of preserved potatoes, a
auiity of Australian meat, several barrels of
-.alt and some cases of teannd tobacco. Thirty
l^rge hospital marquees have also been em-
'jarked, and numerous casts cf tool3 for engi
neers, tinners, carpenters, coopers and other
trades me*. There are also cases of signal
Tickets and slow-match for the Commodore
of the lleet; but the bulk of the
stores are addressed to “The Senior Control
< dicer,’* indicating the uncertainty which
prevails in such a climate as to who may be
.eft in command. Some additional cases of
filters arrived from London, and were ordered
:c* be put on board the Adela, even at the risk
n displacing something else; but she will
rop down to the powder magazines, after
which no general stores will be embarked un
til the arrival of the next ship. The hundred
k2.es already mentioned were supplemented
yesterday by no less than 1,200 others, proving
that the work to be doi\e in cutting through the
1 »nsh has not been lightly estimated. The opin-
or gains ground that not only a wide road, but
A KAILWAY
vili be pushed into the interior; and recent
events have also dispelled the hopes which j
; revailed that Sir Garnet Wolseley would be
able to deal with the Ashantees by means of
the native troops alone, without calling for
he two regiments at home, who are detailed
,or the expedition. A number of the China
i arrows in store have already been converted
> the Royal Carriage Department into trucks
suitable for this service, and handed over to
the Comptroller—Major General H. W. Gor
don, C. 15.—for shipment. These trucks are
filled with hooks for coupling two or more to
gether, and they seem capable of answering
all the requirements of lightness, s'rength
und durability.
The Victor Emmanuel, seventy-nine, screw
-.hip, 3,087 tons, GOO horse power, has been
taken into dock at Portsmouth. She is to be
lilted for service as a hospital ship at Cape
Coast Castle, and in order that the necessary
preparations may be completed as soon as
possible, a large number of workmen have
:>een sent on board. A detachment of the
'fifteenth regiment has left Haslar for Cape
Castle. There was slight insubordination
among some of the men, owing to a misunder
standing about their pay. About a dozen or
fourteen were placed under arrest.

Intoxication is still very prevalent among
the tnops in India. In the Bengal army in
>72 there were 12,348 cases of drunkenness.
In "1870 there were 18G cases of delirium tre

At the trial of a case during the late As-
-h.es at Liverpool, after it had proceeded for
a .out two hours, the Judge, observing signs
f mystification among the jury, asked them
they understood the case, to which they
; plied that they did not in the least. The
• udge said he could not either, and was com
pletely in the dark as to what it was about.
The learned Judge, in summing up, charac
terised the whole case as “ridiculous from
neginning to end.” The jury wero convinced
that the evidence was so unsatisfactory that
they could not give a verdict.
The cultivation of the cinchona plant, from
which quinine is obtained, has been attended
with great success in India. There are now
539,285 plants in the Government planta
tions on the Neilgherry Falls alone, without
counting those of private planters. The
largest trees are thirty and a half feet high,
and over three feet in girth aronnd the trunk.
The bark under cultivation is much richer in
quinine and the other febrifuge alkaloids than
the wild bark of South America. This year
2- ,000 pound of bark will be sent to England.
The alkaloid is manufactured on the spot
very cheaply, and hundreds of fever patients
r.re thus annually cured by the local medical
stores.
There is one place, at least, in this broad
land where woman can get justice, and that is
in the Cleveland police court. Last Friday
one R. J. Wenham caused the arrest of Mrs.
i. D. Titus on a charge of assault and battery,
t appeared from the testimony that Wenham
called at Mrs. Titus’ bouse to collect a bill,
and in the interview with that lady, which
was not entirely harmonious, he made a re
mark derogatory to her character, whereupon
she slapped his face. After hearing this story
Justice Abbey, turning to the accuser, said:
•‘If yon should call at my house and make
su h a remark to my wife you would probably
get something worse than yon got from this
woman.” The gallant Justice then bade Mrs.
-Titus to depart in peace, and Mr. Wenham
bad to pay about five dollars in the way of
costs.
