Mr. Adams—That is a popular mi* .
uension. V. e cannot, ns Grangey, participate ! faithful servants from offi
.n any political movement, for the reason that .
the constitution cf the order expressly pro- ‘
hibits the discus-ion of either political or re
ligions topics in the Granges.
II.—Well, that is singular. The paper-* for
months pest have contained accounts of po
litical meetings ly the Grangeis. and Lav.
published resolutions adopted at such gath
erings.
Mr. A—That may be, br.t inalmott even
case such mee tings were held not as Granee
meetings; and whenever Granges have held
meetings as such, their action has invariably
been repudiated Ly the State Granges.
It.—Then I understand that members cf
tho Granges may paiticipate in political j
movements, and that ^Grangers, as they are j
commonly called, may even go so far as to j
rail meetings, but that it must be done in-,
formally, and not having the sanction of any ,
particular organization of the Patrons of Hus
bandry ?
Mr. A. That’s the idea. We are just like «
the Masons or Odd Fellows in respect to re
ligion and polities. They, as you know, are
at liberty to do just as they please in regard to
politics and religion outside ot the lodges,
and it is the same with ns.

Mr. A.—That is another misapprehension.
In June, when the Republicans held the

K. —One more question. The statement ' lion relative to the state Pair will be clieeiiuJiy given
baa l.eeia i-nblished that colored persons will
not be admitted to the Granges. Is it true
Mr. A. It is not. Every Grange must ex-
ercisc its own discretion as to the ailmissiou
of members. The constitution is silent in
regard to color, and ODly prescribes that ap
plicants must be of good moral character,
tbat they must be interested in agriculture,
and that they must be of a certain age
Grange chooses to admit colored peiaons, it
can do so: there is nothing in the constitution
to prohibit it. The statement that there an
no colored men in the order is incorrect. I
myself have been in Granges where there were
colored members. Thru admission is simply
a local matter, and is settled by tbe local
Granges.
