APPEAL FOR SHREVEPORT AND MEMPHIS.
Toe undersigned has been appointed by a commit
tee of citizens to prepare a brief address to the people
of Atlanta and its vicinity in behalf of the sufferers in ! Cn yesterday a Hebald reporter consulted the city
the terribly smitten cities of Shrev. port and Mem
phis.
Tbe facts in tbe case are well known to the public.
Disease atd death have been busy with their fright
ful work for many days, and yet the havoc and the
suffering still continues. The expenditures for med
icines and miraes, and for the burial of tbe dead, to
say notbiu g of tbe ordinary and absolute necessaries
of life, have teen very large; and tbe means of the
ifflicted inhabitants Lave been exhausted. Without
aid from abroad the distress must not only continue
but Increase.
The question before us is, shall wc do what we can
to relievo the sufferers? Surely there is not a heart
among us that dees cot respond to an appeal ro touch-
register, and found that the following number of
people have registered In the different wards:
5 th ward
.208 | Gth ward 117
7 th ward 14g
1st ward 500
2d ward
3d ward
4th ward 182 J
Total 1.180
Out of the entire number there are only about one
knndred and thirty negroes, making about ten white
men that have registered to one negro. The average
per day is from forty to fifty-five.
