isncy, in the ridiog school, to drive his pony
close along the vail, and seemed to take so
much pleas tire in it that all remonstrance
about its danger vras in vain. At last the
pony went so close that the Prince had his
leg severely bruised. His father had been
informed of this habit, and had ordered him
to discontinne it, and hence the Prince was
afraid to confess that he was hurt. He bore
up braveiy for a day or two, although in great
pain, bnt at length limped so mnch that at
tention was called to it, and he confessed. A
few hours later he was confined to his bed.
Nelaton was 6ent for and stated that an ab
scess had been formed which must be open
ed. He prepared for the operation. The
Emperor was in the chamber in a nervous
fever, now walking up and down the room,
stroking bis mustache, then going up to the
window to beat a tattoo upon it with bis fin
gers. His anxiety could be calmed for a mo
ment only, and then he would insh to his
son, pet him, embrace him, and lavish upon
him his strong affection. As the doctor pre
pared to make the puncture, Napoleon caught
his band and shuddered as if the bistouri had
been plunged into his own body. Nelaton
pushed him binsquely away, and he went to
the window again, but was immediately call
ed back by a cry. Seeing that nothing but
blood came from the wound, the Emperor
began to abuse the surgeon, and for a mo
ment used some very strong language.
"I did not go deep enough, ” said Nelaton
calmly, and he again prepared his knife.
Once more the Emperor caught his hand.
“You prevent me from doing my duty,
Sire,” said Nelaton, severely, once more push-1
ing the Emperor's hand aside, und in an in-1
etant plunged the bistouri into the abscess, i
A stream of pus flowed from the wound, and j
with a gTasp as of intense pain the Emperor {
seized the surgeon’s arms.
^ “There is yet something to be done,” said j
Nelaton, tearing himself loose, and not very
gently, and with a stroke of the knife he laid (
open the young prince’s thigh. The Em-j
peror's eyes flashed with rage, and he looked
as if ready to strike the surgeon dead at his !
feet, when the latter pointed to the pus j
which was then flowing freely. Napoleon :
melted in a moment before this evidence, '
and, crying like a child, he warmly embraced j
the surgeon. Tho prince was caved, and'
Nelaton was adored by the court.

A Story of Nelaton.
From a W.w York Time. Letter. I pie out of every hundred who call themselves

in 1865 the young Prince Imperial look a hanstion, depression of spirits and bodily pain.
At these times a wineglaasful of Hostetter’s
Stomaeh Bitters is as refreshing as “the shad
ow of a rock in a weary land.” It invigorates
and rests the system and cheers the mind.
The effect of the Bitters in cases of nervous
debility, produced either by undue physical
exertion, oveT-Btudy, intense anxiety, or any
other cause, is wonderful reviving and invigo
rating. In fact, this healthful vegetable re
storative possesses medicinal properties which
entitle it to the rank of an artiole of prime ne

ry dwelling, and promptly taken as a remedy
for all tbe minor ailments, as well as for more
serious complaints. oct8-lw.
