Sleeping in Church.
The following parody on Ternjson's
“ Charge of the I.ight Brigade," is based up
on the statement made by Dr. Guthrie that,
at a large religious meeting he once attended
be actually counted fix hundred people
asleep:
OVr their debited h ads
While the Uw thundci'd,
Snugly and
Snored the six hundred.
Oreat was the p-eacher’s theme:
Screw'd on was all the tteam;
Neither with about nor fcreair.
Could ho disturb th« dream
Of the six hundred.
Terrors to the riaht of them,
Te*rors to the left of them,
Terrors in front of them—
Hell itself plundered
Of its most awful things.
Weak-minded preacher d upe
At the dumbfounded.
Boldly no spoke and well;
All on deaf ears it full;
Vain was his lcndest yell
Volley* d and thund r’d;
For caring—the truth io tell—
Neither for heaven nor hell;
Snored the six hundred.
Still, with redoubled zeal,
Still he spoke < award,
And. in a wild appeal,
Strikli g with hand and he-1—
Making the pulpit feel,
Shaken and thundered—
Called them the church’tfoe;;
Threatened with endlc-sa w «.
Faintly the answer r03e
»Pro<>f of tbeir sweet repose)
Fr< m the united nose
Of the six hundred.
Sermon of near an heur,
Too much for human power;
Prayers, too, nvule to match
i Ext* mporaneous ba cb).
Woefully blundered;
With a service oi music
Fit to turn every pew sick—
Shonid it be wondered?
Churches that will i ot move
Out of the ancient groove
Through which they have f!sunder'd,
If they would lag behind.
Still must expect to find
Hearers of such a kind
As the six hundred.
