ATLANTA, SUNDAY, JULY 19, 1874.

Ifcal explanations iu a per-
Wcw, touching the matters in-
Their late personal differences, (and
with the details of which the public have
little concern,) the undersigned adopt this
method of simply announcing to all who have
taken an interest in the subject, that the re
cent quite notorious alienation between them,
arising from misapprehensions or misunder
standings, of whatever character, on r Hlier
or both sidet*, no longer exists; and that the
cordial friendship which had for ncaily forty
years bound them together by a tia as strong
as brotherly attachment, until this short in
terruption, is again peifectly restored.
Alexander H. Stephens.
K. Toombs.
Liberty Hall, Crawfordville, Ga., July 17,
187 i.
ThUMBj—NTKPIl E\S.
The in*ny friends of General Toombs and
Mr. Stephens, will be pleased to learn from
the card published in this morning’s Herald,
that the misunderstanding between these life
long friends is settled.
To-Day’s Hi bald.—The pressure upon our
column's of new advertisements this morning
has short- ntd our reading matter much more
lhau we desired. Oar supplement remedies
the trouble somewhat.
£. We shall continue to make the Herald the
most attractive paper iu the State,
t AXSOT DOAT.
The newspaper roan in this city of immense
domestic and foreign experience, is again as
sured that we cannot afford to do any free ad
vertising. However pleasant it might be to
discant upon one,so vulnerable to ridicnlc and
so terribly open to derision, we cannot afford
to publish his schemes, or even to print his
name (that name so funny of itself that it |
needs no deviation from its straight absurdity ■
to prodnee a smile), at less than our published
rates. T jerc is no more honor to be gained
by stirring him op, than tbere is in poking
umbrellas at the monkies in a menagerie.
ii. ;i. Kt.TIBALL.
The Herai.d has never knowingly defend
ed a bad man. It has never stood between
the people and any man who deserved their
condemnation. It Las never apologized for
a ring, or championed a clique, and it never
will. On the other hand it never shrinks
from speaking its deliberate opinion, and
speaks with no uncertain sound.
The letter of H. I. Kimball, which we pub
lish this morning, no true minded jour
nalist, can fail accept. For^ three years
Mr. KimfAll has remained silent under accu
sations. To-day he speaks and replies seria-
tum to the charges which have been made
aguinst him. The journalist who reads this
letter and then fails to pronounce decidedly
upon his merits, evades a duty, and shiiks a
responsibility.
For our part, wo sbotil d accept as final in
the th-j positive statement trade upon
the question of Mr. Kimball’s guilt to Mr.
K'.mbali himself, by Governor Smith.
The Governor, whose sworn duty it was
to investigate these matters, brought
to the aid of his own exertions the
labors of Hon. Linton Stephens, the acuteai
egal mind of the day, and one thoroughly
posted upon fill the frauds of Bullock’s regi
me; then failed to find anything against Kim
ball “on which to base, much less sustain a
barge.”
Add to this the fact that Mr. Kimball re
turned to the State voluntarily, aud asked for
ao investigation while the Legislature was iu
session, and that the (’ourts have failed to ar
rest or prosecute Mr. Kimball though called
upon to do so, would, it seems, satisfy the
unprejudiced that thtre was not much of a
case against him.
His candid and manly reply, will, we think,
strengthen his cause, and explain to the peo
ple those points which the State and Court
officers have already become acquainted w ith.
There seems to lie no evasion i$ it; no dodg
ing. He approaches every issue fairly, and
speaks plainly, and wc think, satisfactorily
upon it.
Mr Kimball, we hope, is coming back to
make Georgia bis home. He comes as a pri
vate citizen, representing certain interests,
which he proposes to probably identify with
Atlanti. We for one, shall welcome him and
all like him. Aud until something worse has
been proved against him than has yet been
suggested, the Herald is bis friend.
He comes as we know, a poor man. If so
this is all the deeper reason for the welcome
which the Herald extends him. It he comes
and casts his lot with our people, puts his
shoulder to the wheel, and gives aid in the
great work of building up our city, he will
find friends, whether he brings money or not.
His invitation to the Chronicle and Sentinel
to lay before some jury the facts upon which
it ba^es its belief of his guilt, may lead to a
jud cial investigation of his affairs aud it may
nut. We shall see.
the stricken city.

Drs. Greene, Lindley A Bent ley—Dear Sirs:
My daughter has been taking “Dr. Greene’s
Fit Cure’’lor three mouths with most wonder
ml effect. For five years that fell destioyer
Epilepsy had made her life a living death;
and for the last two years so aggravated bad
her case become, although trying every ad
vertised remedy, as well as the best medical
talent in the ni^gborhood, that she had from
one to three hard tits eyery day. We had ut
terly despaired of aDv relief, and procured
your medicine to satisfy feelings that compell
ed us to do something as life remained. But
strange to say, from the first day’s use of the
medicine, the fits stopped, and up to this
time (three months) she has not had a single
attack. Her condition, both mentally and
physically, has greatly improved, so she is
now able to attend church and pnrsue her
usual avocations of life. I consider your Fit
Core an invaluable remedy, and believe it
will, if used according to directions.arrest any
case of fits. John A. Williams.
