School op Refokm. —His Honor, W. A.
Huff, Principal.
The case of Frank Bonner, for disorderly con
duct, was up, but his lawyer being out of ttie
city, was continued.
The case of George Armstrong, for cutting
Kit Tompkins, was brought up, but continued.
Cikcl'3. —It has been a long time since our
walls have been ornamented by the skill of the
paste-brush brigade. To-day the avant couriers
of the great Eastern Menagerie are busy with
illuminated bills and the paste bucket. The
small boys of both color stand by witli open
mouth, gazing at the semi-nude ladypirrou
etting ;upon the bare back of the white horse,
or the familiar grotesque actions of the clown.
We love the saw dust arena, and almost wish
that “we were a boy again,” to enjoy as only
boys can enjoy, the sight of a circus ring. But
lackaday ! those days have passed.
Look out for the big show on October first.
Tiie Fall Campaign.—ln our perambula
tions this morning, we stumbled into our
leading houses to note the preparations for tne
fall season. In the dry goods li ewe saw lots
to tempt the Flora McFlimseys and the “ fol
low-the-fashion-or-dies,” arranged upon the
counters and shelves. This Empress cloth
pattern is exquisite, and this rep silk is superb.
We first entered the large, Stewart-like estab
lishment of
J. B. HOSS & S. T. COLEMAN.
In here we found an army of clerks busy
with marking and putting goods in their ap
propriate places. Mr. Coleman, the business
man, is running his eye over the entire store,
directing with excellent taste the arrangement
of the different classes of goods. A lady “who
enters here leaves hope behind,” as Dante has
It, in regard to her pocket-book as there is no
getting around purchasing, at least, something.
After bidding them good morning we step into
the great
NEW YORK 6TORE,
presided over by that handsome fellow, Wax
elbaum. A trip to the North, an extensive
knowledge of the business, with a never-erring
taste, he has placed in his store a lot of goods
unequalled in quality in the South. Every
fabric known to the ladies is here in profusion.
We then enter flic well known establishment
of
W. A. BANKS A SONS.
Additions have been made to this extensive
house, and their variety of ladies’ dress goods
is not surpassed. This house is noted for its
cleverness and fair dealing. Their stock is al
ways the best, and the ladies know exactly
where to look for cleverness and elegant goods.
We next step in next door and see eur friends
w. A. HOPSON a co.
These gentlemen and Ross & Coleman have
been warring with each other during the sum
mer, but it was all in fun, and there are no bet
ter friends than the two houses. Hopson is
alive to all the wants of the fair sex ih the dry
goods line. Were he to hear of anew style
of dress or anew kind of goods, sleepless
nights and an aching brow would be Hopson’s
portion until he could lay before his lady cus
tomers upon his own shelves the “lovely” pat
tern. Enterprise and industry tUs. and Hopson
knows it. Our friend
A. BAUM
lias not been asleep. He, too, has run through
the Northern market for goods, as his well
flljed and tastily arranged shelves will testify.
Baum is a great favorite among the ladies, as
bis goods and prices always suit. Around on
Third street we find that clever fellow,
ous NUSSBAUM.
Ous is one of these fellows, who, If he can’t
get the best in the market, he won’t have any.
I his fact alone has given him a good trade
among the ladies. His new stock is rapidly
coming hi and he is prepared to render justice
unto all. We then pass under the sign of
NUSSBAUM A DANNENBURG.
It is a wonder how these gentlemen manage
to employ enough clerks to carry on their bus
iness. We never pass there but what we see
all hands busily engaged. They do a tremen
dous business, and they deserve it
Having now gone through the leading dry
goods houses, we lay down our pencil till to
morrow, when we will bruise around among
the clothing and fancy good* stores.

Oho arize! Ohgamze! !—To-night, a week
ago the President or the Centrul Democratic
Club earnestly appealed to the Democracy of
Bibb coußty to organize themselves into ward
and district clubs, and bluco that time ouly one
ward, the First, has taken any steps towards
concentrating their strength by uniting them
selves. Democrats, this will not do! There
Is work, hard work, before us, and if we remain
scattered wo will lose the light. We must be
np and doing. We must go to work in ear
nest, and we have no time to lose. We must
not sleep over this matter. The First ward
gallantly went to work and are now in working
trim. Where Is the'Sueond, Third and Fourth ?
What have they done ? Nothing.
Then we call upon them in strongest terms
to oigaulzo clubs and be ready, when the lime
comes, to go forth as a unit and victory is ours.
Now is the time. Democrats, go to will;

State of Trade.— After passing through
one of, if not the dullest summers In the his
tory of Macon, it is truly gratifying to see trade
japidly reviving oil every hand. Our streets
this morning presented quite a lively appear
ance, certainly a great contrast with that of the
laalJUiree months. Money is still quite scarce,
but with the sale of each bale its proceeds are
turned loose, and it cannot therefore be long
before our financial lift ail's will be In a perfectly
healthy condition.
Dry goods, groceries, western produce, and
general plantation ami household supplies, are
pouring in from other markets, and our mer
chants are cither fully, or soon will be, ready
to furnish every want demanded by the trade;
There is no lack of conlidcncc on their part, and
they have puichasedlargei stocks than for any
