Tulent is serious, sober, grave.and respectable; (act is all that. Mid more 100. Tact Is not a sixth sense, hut, it is the life of all the live. It is Hie open eye. the quick ear, the judging taste, the keen smell, and llie lively touch ; it Is the in terpreter of all riddles, the iiirmountcr of all ilifllcullies, the remover of nil obsta cles. It is useful in all places and at nil times ; it is useful in solitude, for it shows a man ills way into llie world ; it Is useful in society, for It shows him his way through tlio world. Talent is power— tact is skill , talent is weight—tact is mo mentum ; talent knows what to do—tact knows how to do it; tulent makes a man respectable—tact will make him respect ed . talent is wealth—tact is rcudy money. For all the practical purposes of life tact carries Hie day against talent —ten to one. The presence of moderate men In this canvass is especially needed Its elements of bitterness, and unfairness, and scurrility, aro llie best of all reasons, not forstamllug aside, hut for taking part In a manly, hon orable and Christian way. It is only thus that the lone of our politics can be raised; und the neutrality of good citizens only fosters the evils against which it is meant ns a protest. Some years since, at one of Hie London Philharmonic concerts,a singer marked on Hie conductor’s copy of his soug, "Wait for the applause," ut a particular passage. At the performance there was a sudden cessaliun of the orchestral accompani ments, to the no small amazement of the auditory, and tlio discomfiture, of course, of the artist. "What ate you shipping for ?" said the siuger to the conductor, who dryly replied, "1 am waitiug for Hie applause, according to your written direc tions," The director, we need add, was never afterword troubled with instructions to wait for tho applause.— Brooklyn Ka file. TEN —ONE. \YIIKHII AUK TIIK NINK. Tkn Dinkrh ok tkn Years AOO. — In IBl>2 ten young gentlemen of congenial tastes uml tempers boarded at a laaliiona bio boarding bouse in New York Tiny divided up in parties of twos, anil threes and fours, and attended theatres, lectures, and other places of interest in the even ings and when they returned they made it a point to meet in the parlor aud talk over the business, pleasures and adven tures of the day before they retired to their rooms. Their close frieudslnp, and this method of each comnmuieatiug his expe rience for the benefit of all, proved both instructive aud entertnining and these dally ieutilons possessed local attraction enough to draw them all together at a regular hour lu the evening This mode of life continued lor some years. At ieugth the time came for them to separate Thu country needed its young men aud called for several in this party often. They had a farewell dluner In their boarding house on the 10th of September, I Mil’, and and a grand time feasting, ami talking singing songs. One remarkable feature of tbls celebra Uon was dial before they separated at 2 o'clock in the morning each arose in his place and made a solemn vow that If liv ing he would meet the rest of his com panions at 8 o'clock in the same place, and dine with them teu years hence, as they had dined that night. Each one was to occupy the same seat, and as near as possible, they were to have the same kind ot a diuuer. So they bade each other good night and separated, lu the course of years the house changed hands and set up the more pretensious claims of a hotel. The dining room remained, however, just ns it was, aud probably the old table and <• hairs were still on duty Some days ago. Mr. Kdward K Win ship, broker, 24 Hoad street, called on th* proprietor oftbe hotel, amt requested him to prepare dlnuer for ten gentlcmeu in the old dining-room, oa the evening of Sept. 10. Mr. \Vinship briclly narrated the cir cumstances of the compact to explain his request, and that being the eldest of tho party often, lie bad been appointed on the evening of their dining in lt>62, as chair man At precisely S o'clock on the even ing of Sept. 10, Mr. Winshlp entered the dining-room, and the doors were quickly closed behind him. No one else catne. The table was bounteously spread, three colored waiters were there, ami nine emp ty chairs aud iuverted plates and glasses at every chair. The meal wits begun, and the solitary banqueter was served with the prescribed courses almost iu si lettce Mr. Winshlp occasionally passed a word w ith the bead-waiter. "Poor boys! They're all gone.’' said be. -One went down in the Mouitor in Mobile Uav, another was drowned iu the same waters. Two were shot iu Mobile. One lost both legs by a ball, and the other was pierced thtough the heart Auollier died m Philadelphia, aud another died in Y'ork." lie said that while iu Keb- last he was walking up Broadway one evening, he felt a tap on the ahoulder, and a voice asked him whether he knew Mr. ■ *'l do," replied Mr. Winabip. " lie died at 4 o’clock to day," said the voice. Though Mr. Winship turned quick ly upon feeling the tap and hearing the voice, he was unable to ascertain who it was that had addressed him- lie after ward learned that one of the party of ten had died that day aud at the hour indica ted. CARDS, PRINTING It It ah beta tlu> custom heietofore, and will probably remain s<f to a great extent, for our merchants and business men generally to send North to lmve their printing done, simply because it can be done there at a little lower figure than here. It our people would discontinue patronizing such men. they would soon see the policy, if not the jus tice, in having their work done at home. Calicos are not manufactured in the South, and hence the merchant must send where it Is made, but here we have printing offices all around us, doing work at a very small advance on northern prices, and still the work is sent away. We hope the time is not for distant when our merchants will awake to their in terests and patronize home institutions. It is a wrong practice and should be condemned. MIA CO* PRICE CURRENT.
