Kwtew'Rlkb — Itmr Mir ■■—Your r port of the Congressional Convention held here on the ltttii Inst... certainly does an injuKtice (unintentionally of course) to tlie ifaldwln delegation. Of their “singular actions," you say "it seems that though elected to represent Mr. Nutting, certain, members of it were from the first, the par tl/.uns of Cot lilount aud could not, with out difficulty tio controlled " Tills Is error In point of fact Thesprlma ry meeting tliut elected these delegates did not select a single one of them, with u view to Ins supporting .Mr. Nulling They were chosen without any avowed preference ?>u their part for either aspi rant. Had these gentlemen publicly avow ed their prclcrunce, probably no Nutting man would have got a "corporal’s guard of support In this Hireling. We liud In the Spectator the mo t Intel ligiblc account we have yet seen of the ih-llast riots. As was before known, the repeal of the I’arty Processions Act gave the immediate opportunity for the disturb ance, It seem that the Protestants cele brated llm anniversary of the buttle of the Hoync, and were not disturbed in doing so. lint the Catholics, to compensate tliemselvos for tlieir foiiiearauco, got up a great celebration of tlieir own, a month later, in honor of Home Ituie as well as Catholicism. The Orangemen apparently without a shadow of jualilicatlou or pro voeutlou, turned out in seml-mlllltary ar ray and attacked the procession The Catholics, feeling themselves doubly Injur ed try this breach of a truce, promptly met tlieir ussaihinta. The light lasted lor days, and degenerated Into simple pillage ami plunder. The Magistrates were ineapnhio. The (Spectator, which always favors a liberal policy toward Ireland, suggests the crea tion of a strong sub-magistracy from the people themselves, selected try competi tion, and given large power for preserving tiie peace, it says tliut the present Irish magistrates cannot act with vigor because they are or arc supposed to he members of one faction or the other, and fail of re spect acaordingly. Wo wish flint some of our American papers llmt are never tired of telling raw head and bloody-honc stories about the Catholics, would have the Justice to occa sionally notice such cases us tills, where the violence begins from tlieir own side, and to recognize that bigotry is just as hateful in Protestants as in Catholics. PRINTING It has been the custom heretofore, and will probably remain so to a great extent, for our merchants and business men generally to send North to have their printing done, simply boeause it can l>e done there at a little lower figure than here. If our people would discontinue patronizing such men, they would soon see the policy, if not the jus tice, in having their work done at home. Calicos are not manufactured in the South, and hence the merchant must send where it is made, but here we have printing offices all around us, doing work at a very small advance on northern prices, and still the work is sent away. We hope the time is not for distant when our merchants will awake to tlieir in terests and patronize home institutions. It is a wrong practice and should be condemned.
