One of the most distressing affairs wo linvc over been cullod upon Vo notice took place in Tallahassee a few days ugo. .Mrs. A. tV. Price, wilo of a popular and successful Jacksonville merchant, and daughter of Mr. George Damon, a promi nent merchant in Tallahassee, seemed to be suffering from some mental derange ment, nnd thinking a change of scene mid .‘lurrouudings might cure her In ti pieul malady, her husband took her lo her parents and friends in Tallahassee •>n Wednesday last. That night, soou af ter her arrival at her lather's house, she called the family around her and prayed and exhorted them to prepare for a great nnd sad calamity. Nona had any Idea Hint she was contemplating anything like self destruction. The next morning early her father went out to procure a bottle of wine for her, and soon after the departure she took a kerosene lump or cau, and saturating her self from head to foot, put a match to it, nnd in a moment was enveloped In flames, ller husband and others, hearing the shrieks, ran lo her rescue, and throwing u bucket of water over her, endeavored to extinguish tlio flames. This proved un availing, and her husband, seizing s blanket, threw it around her, ami dually succeeded in putliug out the Humes, hut not till the poor victim was burned to such an extent that she died in a few houis, after the most iutense suffering. Mrs. Pace wus (|uite young, snd hud tieen married only uliout three or four years. Two years ago siio wus the happy wife of ft devoted hufthand, whose success in business had placed him in comfortable circumstances. At that time the writer saw the happy pair at their own luxurious home in Jacksonville. Wc have not learned the causes which led to this dis tressing calamity. —Mac Atlrerliter Li Chow Chin's iiukial —A Cuinksk hi; NKItAI. IN 11tt1.1.V11.1.K N. J . Li Chow Chin was buried yestesdny in the vacaut grounds adjoining Cupt. Harvey's laundry in lleilviile N. J. and the unique ceremonies ol' u Chinese funer al were performed in Ids honor. The latter days of 1.1 Chow Chiu's life were spool in communion witli an ugly wooden god, to which he remained desperately loyal, in Hpite ef the efforts of a Christian minister to convert him. His funeral was attended by 210 Chinese, the total number of ( apt Harvey’s Imported washermen. Dressed as usual in wooden shoes, flabby pantaloon loose shirts and fur extendending pigtals, they assembled in tlio spacious ironing room of the laundry awaiting the removal of their departed brother. When nil was ready they moved gravely down to the burial place in the Held below. They sur rounded the grave ami each threw s piece nl lighted pn|M-r down upon the corpse. A j volume of smoke arose from the gruve, j and the spirit of LI C’ltow Chiu was bo lleved by his brethren to have ascended with it to the clouds. As the day was being heaped upon the corpse little eticks and pierce ofnlkel currency mingled with it. and money was distributed among the strangers who witnessed tlio ceremony. After the funeral the Chinamen's supper boll rnug. and they repaired uproariously to their chop (ticks nnd unseasoned ten and rice. PRINTING It has been the custom heretofore, and will probably remain so to a great extent, for our merchants and business men generally to send North to have their printing done, simply because it can be done there at a little lower figure than here. If our people would discontinue patronizing such men, they would soon see the policy, if not the jus tice, in having their work done at home. Calicos are not manufactured in the South, aud hence the merchant must send where it is made, but here we have printing offices all around us, doing work at a very small advance on northern prices, and still the work is sent away. \Ye hope the time is not for distant when our merchants will awake to their in terests and patronize home institutions. It is a wrong practice and shonld be condemned. BOSTON —AND— Savannah Steamship Line. SAILING DAYS-EVERY SATURDAY OF EACH MONTH. IOW rates of freight and insurance.
