Did Lord UyougLnm vv iftu iho novel re cently published as his, called ’‘Albert I,u --nel?" This is a question which is oxcit ing no little discussiou in the literary cir cles of England.. .’Che -evidence pun and con liis authorship Way he stated briefly as follows . The publisher says lie bought the book of a Mr. Thomas Millard, who, in his turn, had bought it of the present Lord Brougham, who has entered into an undertaking to make no claim.in respect of copyright. This is positively alltlie dt- I rect evidence there is that Lord Brougham is the author ; slid really one is templed to say that it is no evidence Af. all. The book was printed in IS i t it mi suppressed, what appeared to, be anew publication, being, in fact, the old sheets with anew title-puge. The author speaks of himself in the preface as "having no name at all"—but this may have been a bit of mystification The internal evi dence of tho book itself is said to be against the presumption of Brougham's authorship, as the plot is commonplace, the construction inartistic, the style slov euly—the whole trash, iu fact. Our readers after this will be astonished to be told that there is little doubt after nil that Lord Brougham did write Albert Lunel. In "Men of the Times" (1856.) It is stated that Lord Brougham had published a novel which he suppress ed alter a few copies had been disposed of; and this statement may be considered authoritative. The Life of Lord Brougham by M'Gilclirist (1868) mentions the novel by name and its suppression. Here it is stated that Lord Jeffrey had the book bound uniformly with those of his friend and set it beside them in his library. 'lt is admitted that as a novel the work is unworthy of Lord Brougham's great fame, and he mny even have adapted it from some obscure French book. But in the long dissertations which J destroy its character us a novel are “tin- j niistakable traces of the great restless mind that ransacked the universe for top ics of speculation.” It is considered rath er extraordinary that Lord Brougham's j evident intention to suppress the work should not have been respected by the j present Lord.— iV.
