Register.
But few days remain in which you can regis
ter. Everybody, white and colored, should go
at once and register, if not, you can’t vote.
This is an important election, and the people
want good officers, and to elect them the peo
ple must register. Drop tills paper and reg
ister at once before yon forget it. Delays are
dangerous.
Epizooticnl Note*.
The street ears have stopped running. 80
lias the track—cause: epizoaty.
The street lamps were not lit until a late
hour last night Epizooty.
The old city clock will cease to tick when it
gets through the last winding, which w ill be
in a day or so. Cause —mule that time-keeper
employs to wiud it up is sick.
Richard 111 must have felt the terrible effects
of the horse disease when he found the aquines
so scarce as to cry “ray kingdom for a horse !”
To keep from having the epizooty —prove
yourself a jackass. This mode of preventive
is simple and easily dene by some people.
“Ola, How Beautiful!”
Such was the exclamation of a beautiful
young lady 06 she opened the door and looked
in at Brown & Co.’s bookstore yesterday.
And how could she help uttering sueli words
when such a lovely array of holiday goods and
presents greeted her vision. This young lady
softly tripped in and before she left purchased
numbers of articles, “ because,” she says, “ ev
erything is plainly marked with the price and
it is so little trouble to look at and examine
these goods that I can’t help from buying.”
As Solon Shingle would say, “ Jes so.”
Happy Cal Wagner.
This famous burnt-corkist will have his great
troupe of mlnistrcls down our way shortly.—
The Nashville papers speak in glewing terms
of their performances. The Union and Ameri
can thus speaks of them:
A rousing house greeted Cal Wagner and his
corps of burnt-cork artists, on their first ap
pearance at the Old Theatre last evening, and
repeated bursts of applause indicated the
hearty enjoyment provoked by tlie really first
class ministrel bill.
Wagner, Wilson, Canfield, Booker, the
Welling Brothers, Frccth, Price—each of them,
are very happy in their specialities.
Tlie encores were responded to very prom ply,
and the company did their best on their intro
ductory night. The programme opened with
a grand vocal and instrumsntal concert, fol
lowed by a “carnival d’Ethiop,” songs and
dances, faces, plantation melodies, (Wagner
doing these with great success) Grecian statues
and combination, vocal renderings, and con
cluded with tlie laughing extravaganza entitled
“TronblCß, trials ana difficulties.
Death of J. K. Clarke, the old
Bailiff’.
The announcement was informally made in
the Superior Court room this morning that
Jared R. Clarke had suddenly died at his resi
dence in East Macon last night. The news of
his decease was received with sincere regret by
the Judge, Bar, officers of the county and offi
eers of thb Court, and the community at large
will hear of it with sorrow. He had passed
tlie allotted span of life, “three soore and ten,”
having reached seventy-five or seventy-six.
Coming to East Macon forty years ago he lived
there continuously. For thirty of these forty
years lia lias been tlie Bailiff of tiie Bibb
county Grand Juries with perhaps a 6hort in
terval when his fellow-citizens elected bin
Magistrate which office he filled acceptably.
No one who has served upon any Grand
Jury .of our county for this long time will fail
to remember or speak in praise of the good old
man. lie was always attentive and polite, and
in the discharge of the duties of his simple
office did hi full duty. Having been twice
married, his second wife and several grown up
children survive him.
Eire Works.
While we do not wish the little boys to be
denied fun in the shooting of poppers and
rockets, we hope for tha safety of the eity that
the law bearing upon the subject will be rig
idly enforced without any regard whatever to
race, color or previous condition.
We remember the great fire in our city last
Christmas, canted by the reckless handling
of pyrotechnic playthings, and to avoid a rep
etition of that fire, w sound the note of warning
so early.
. To those boys who are like some men and
and their whisky—can’t do without it—we
would suggest that they repair to the half-mile
track at the Park, where they can pop poppers
add rock rockets to their heart’s content, with
no danger, provided they do not get too near
the Park buildinng. Another place is suggested,
and that is the open apace in front of the Park.
We hope due care will be exercised, without
which onr beautiful city may change to a city
of ruins in a single night.
Ir you want good groceries to eat, good
liquors to drink and good cigars to smoke, drop
in at the New York grocery store on Second
street, and you will be accommodated.
Go to the New York grocery store and get
the new cigar “Pntzels Deljght."

TRIAL or BENNETT, THE HANK FORGER.
After waiting one hour and a half this morn
ing upon an attorney for the defence, the csso
of Wra. Bennett, bank forger, was resumed.
Colonel Whittle opened for the prisoner, but,
hiving been up for three nights without much
rest, ho left the burthen of tlie argument to
his associate, Mr. Dcssan. He was followed
by Mr. T. B Gresham, for tlie prosecution,
who was to have been succeeded by Mr. Des
sau, Colonel Bacon making tiie closing speech
for the State. From the evidence it is difficult
to foreshadow the verdict of tlie jury; their
verdict will scarcely be rendered to night.
It will be remembered that one morning
during the month of Mayor June last a man
calling himself Henry C. Holmes presented a
letter of introduction and a let ter of credit
purporting to have been issued by tlm National
Bank of the Republic of New York to Col. T.
W. Maugham, cashier of the Central Bank of
Mscon. These documents allcdged that the
bearer, Holmes, had a certain amount ot
Ynonej to his credit in the Bank of Republic
and requested that if 110 wished any accommo
dations while in Macon, it was hoped tiie Cen
tral would grant them The letter was written
under the regular letter head of the bank, in a
hand very similar to its cashier, and had all tlie
appearance at a first glance of being a genuine
document. Holmes demeaned himself with
tlie air of a man doing honest business while in
the bank. Col. M. introduced him to Mr. Jones
the President who was in the back room
and turned overthapuperstohim Holmes said
he wanted $11,500 and the teller Mr. Flanders,
was directed to pay it over to him Holmes giv
ing a sight .draft upon the Republic for that
amount. Picking up his hat and the money
Holmes witli a polite bow retired. He lies
never been seou here since. Oa the following
day the police of Macon arrested two suspi
cious characters and upon tlie person of one
giving his name as Win. Bennett, they fouud
letters and documents which upon compari
son i> re veil to be identical with those upon
which Holmes obtained $0,50U from the Cen
tral Bunk. Then the Bank telegraphed to New
York and the Republic replied ttiat it knew
nothing of Holmes and pronounced his papers
forgeries. The other man arrested in com
pany witli Bennett passed in several places in
under the name of Holmes. It came out dur
ing the investigation that these men under ar
rest had gone from Macon to Columbus and
on tlie day the Bank wa3 robbed here they at
tempted to raise tlie Chattahoochee National
lluuk for $6,500 the precise amount obtained,
here. But the Cashier was out of tlie Bank
and it being a well-known practice of these
gentry never to call tlie second time upon tlie
same business, they left Columbus and re
turned to Macon. Ilore Bennett either got
drunk or pretended so, went into the Dollar
Store of L. B. Pike on Fourth street, showed
liis forged papers and told what had happened
in Columbus. Upon this they were arrested
and Bennett is now having a flual heariug. The
case is a very complicated one and it is difficult
to tell what will be the final issue. There ap
pears to be no doubt about the complicity of
the prisoners or that they were accessories be
fore tlie fact, hut whether tha Slate lias made
that clear to the jury is the point, they alone
can determine.
During the morning the Cosm 1 , discharged
some seven or eight negro prisoners from jail,
tlie Solicitor entering a nolle pvittiqui in each
case. In each instance their or dual prosecu
tor failed to appear before tin Grand Jury.
Some of them have been in jail fur six months
at the expense of the county, ami it was sug
gested in Court this morning that the Legisla
ture ought in all such cases make the prosecu
tors pay all costs.

IT I* universally conceded Hint advertising is
u necessity to success in husines*; it in also
conceded, by the shrewdest business men, that
newspapers are the best medium for reuchiug
all parties whose trade Is desired.
THIS MONROE ADVERTISER
reaches more of the people trading with Ma
con than any other journal published in the
country; it is, therefore, the bent medium of
communication with the planting interests.
We will be happy at any time to furnish refer
ences to leading merchants here and elsewhere,
who will testify to the fact that they have re
ceived orders for goods from parties who read
theJr cards in The Advertiser. In fuel, many
who have availed themselves of its columns,
candidly say that its value exceeds that of all
other journals in which they are represented.
Thr, Advertiser has the freshness of youth and
the ripeness of age, and is therefore deservedly
successful.
CHARACTER OF ADVERTISEMENTS.
No advertisements arc admitted which are
not believed to he above question and of real,
value, and from parties so unquestionably fi
nable that the readers of The Advertiser will be
safe in ordering them from any distance. To
our readers, the fact of its appearance here has
all the weight of endorsement and authority.
Address, JAM. R HARRISON,
