I . M. NIIIATOR. The press of the S'ate gcnenlly arc dis cussing the question as to who ought to receive the election of U. 8. Senator at the hands of the Legislature in January. The discussion is tieiug con due'ed wi'li fairness end much ability, upon general principles, aud in several caw s the names of prominent gentlemen specially urged for the position That the Legislature will lie governed by the highest patriotic mo tives, we cannot doubt, without reference the mere personal preference. In speaking on this subject, the Greens boro' Herald say, •Georgia has many sons who are well qualified to till the position with honor to themselves and their constituency .and if we could select four Senators, we would select tht four men whose names have te en most frequently mentioned in connection with the position—Colquitt, (Jordan. Johnson and Stephens Towards two of these, (Jens Colquitt and (Jordan, we teel, in its fall force the sentiment that usually exist be tween men. whe have stood together in tiis same battles, and if we w ere to con suit our feelings alone, we Would most probaly favor the brsve aud gilded (Jor don, the peerless chevalier of the Southern army, above all otlieis lJut under all the circumstances of the situa lion, we regai and Mr Stephens as pre-etui inently qualified uud entitled to the posi tion " A correspondent, Veritas, ill an able communication in the Columbus Sun, lavors the election of Mr. Stephens From among several points well taken by the writer, we have room only for the follow It'S •• The "disabilities " clause of the XlVtli Amendment (so called) was of more real injury to the South than any other of the abominable reconstruction nn asures It was this which struck down the wisdom, the statesmanship, the ability uud the in tegri'y of the South It was this which denied to Mr. Stephens uud ex Gov. 11. V. Johnson their seats in the l.’ 8 Seriate to which they were elected by Georgia in IHbfi. Now upon principle slid public policy, could tbe Legislature of Georgia do anything more effectual in the vindication of the rights, honor and dignity of the State, than to return Mr Stephens and Gov Johnson to their seats as they become vacant, from which they were then most wrongfully ejected, now that this disahil ity clause no longer applies to eitiier of them, aud now that they would no longer Ire denied their scats’ On principle and policy, therefore, the Legislature ought to elect Mr. Stephens now and Gov Johnson as soon as a vacancy occurs." " We are not [ucpaied to say that the President could do otherwise under the laws hut what of the laws that authorize such proceedings ami require him to sus tain them ? Notoriously the legislature thus reorgauizod convenes upon certificates issued by a packed returning board timt had not a single sheet of election returns logo upon. Notoriously the Lieutenant Governor, who is recognized as the acting Governor of the State, holds his [million by virtue solely of au expired Seuatorship, Ida successor having been elected by an overw helming majority. All the laws of the State have been set aside , and all the Slate Courts have been bound over to silence . all the State olficers deposed, the •lection returns ignored, and anew Leg islature and Executive installed hv the mere dictum of five partisans acting under that of n partisan Judge, who bases Ins whole right to inaugurate this *wce| - mg revolution upon a clause of the En torcciuent act and the affidavit of certain negroes that their voles had been unlaw fully refused.
