She was a most excellent lady, and her death will be regretted by a large circle of frienda. dome. oine, •*• The holiday gifts at Brown fc Co.’s are rap idly disappearing from their counters. If you want anything in that line now is your only , nance. Go at once and accuro your presents. Accident. Yesterday, while an old negro man was handing an umbrella to an engineer on oue of the railroad engines, his foot slipped in some manner, and he fell, getting his arm terribly crushed. Dr. Holmes amputated it this morn ing. Ulieelerdt Wlaltcliuffel. Attention is called to the advertisemeut.of those gentlemen in to-day’s issue. They are now prepared to fund h everything to families, from fresh pork, beef, etc., to general groce ries. Give them a call. Tlic Weatlicr. The line drizzling rain has ceased to trouble pedestrians, but the mud still continues to lay in bliss upon the streets. To day the weather is tolerably good. THE IIAYOB’S COURT. HON. W. A. HUFF I’HESIDINO. The police force having been greatly reduced, the number of names on the docket are conse- Hiiently reduced to none. There has been only one case in the last two or three days. The l*rcnbyteriun Festival. This Festival to be given by the ladies to the children of tha Presbyterian Church, has bora postponed until to-morrow evening, in eon-c<iuence of bad weather, and the wretched condition of our streets. Preparations are in process and have already hem completed to make it one of the most interesting affairs of the season. The ladies having it in charge well understand how to mauage such entertainments. No charge will be made for admission, and children from ten to seventy-five are cordially invited to attend. 'l'lie I*olice. The police force of our city hue been reduced cue-half. We are now left with twelve policeman to patrol a city of a population of IP,(XX) and with the holidays a few days off. The tirst thing anew board of Alderman docs is to pitch right out for an economical admin istration, and the unfortunate police force is always the first thing they light on. Give us a goon police force and pay them well for what they do. The Christmas Tree. Mr. Editor: In your notice of the Christmas Tree proposed to be had by the Aurora Lodge of Good Templars, a mistake, likely to mislead as to time, was made. The time will be TnuKSDAY,DECEMBEK 26th,instead of Wednes day, the 35tli. I would also state that tickets can be had at the drug stores of S. D. Everett and J. It. Zoilin & Cos.; also, of Mbs Maggie Kelly, Leroy Crockett, Miss Hattie Ilillard and the members generally. As we are desirous of putting our Lodge on a good foundation, fi nancially, as well as furnishing an oocasion of enjoying ourselves on a cold water basis, we hope all friends of the Order will lend a helping hand. Every ticket will draw something. Aurora. The Forger’* Gang. The astonishing operations of a gang of forgers, distributed through several Southern cities, among them our city, and working in con cert, were detailed in this and other papers last winter. It will be remembered, the oper ations were conducted on principles as scien entifle as those of a military campaign. The headquarters of the gang were in New York. Dispatching the men to half a dozen large cities, tlia campaign was opened. The first step was to deposit in banking-houses the cheeks previously prepared in New York ; then, at an appointed time or signal, the checks were drawn upon, as collatteral, for a fifth or third of their amount, and the operators decamped, the calculations being that, even should or two of the gang be caught, the rest would undoubtedly make a haul large enough to bail, and perhape clear their unfor tunate “pal.” Thu operations of the gang above referred to were very successful. In Huntsville, Montgomery, Decatur, Charleston, Savannah, Augusta Macon aud several other Southern cities, where members of the band had been statiomed, banks and individuals were taken in, and the forgers succeeded in getting away with a total amount of over SBO,OOO. Great excitement prevailed, and every effort was made to capture the criminals. Telegrams and letters describing their personal appear ance, etc., were dispatched over the country, and the detectives of the principal cities put upon the alert for their capture. Two of them, Holmes and Bennett, were captured in our city, but months paesed, and nothing was heard of the others until last week. A few days ago, Chief Detective Harrigan, of St. Louis, received information which led him to believe that one of their number was in that city. A man answering the description, -and named E. C. Servisa, supposed to he ona of the principal members of the gang, was found stopping at the Southern Hotel. A sharp watch was kept upon him, and on Dec. 10th Detec tives Harrigan, Duckworth and Tracy arrested him on the comer ofj Fourth ;and Walnut Sts. He was searched. On his person were found a large pocket-book, containing a number of sus spicious articles. A few blank pages were writ ten in cypher. In the pocket-book were a num ber of letters, directed to E. C. Scrvis-fsornc of which ware evidently written from a “pal” in New York, and a photograph of a rather pretty woman about thirty year* of Age. The principal “find,” however, was seven drafts, purporting to have been drawn by Fordice & ltisdon, of Huntsville, Ala., on the North Amer ican Bank, of New York, in favor of James A. Cook, Esq. They rang* in amount from $.7)0 to S3OOO, and aggregated $11,700. Serviss(that lc- admitted waa bas name) was considerably taken by bis sudden arrest, but he denied that lo- knew anything about it (the pocket-book: it didn t belong to him, he didn't know whom it and and belong to, and he eeuld not account for bein ™ t!ierc - He was taken to tbe Four Courts, and will be held to awsit orders from ■be Chief Of Police of Huntsville, Alabama, who was telegraphed to immediately. It is supposed that be was arrested last spring m ' <-w ° rleanß - and bad jumped bis bail. lie arnved there a bent a week ago, registering himself at the Southern as from New York, and it is not yet known whether he has yet -ucceeded in victimizing any of the 8L Louis '■auks. IT ia universally conceded that advertising ia a necessity to success In business; It ia also conceded, by the shrewdest business men, tbat newspapers are the beat medium for reaching all parties whose trade Is desired. THE MONBOE ADVERTISER reaches more of the people trading with Ma con than uay ether journal published in tbe country; it Is, therefore, the tmt medium of communication with the planting Interests. We will be happy at any time to furnish refer ences to leading merchants here and elsewhere, who will testify to the fact that they have re ceived orders (or goods from parties who read their cards in The Advertiser. In fact, many who have availed themselves of Its columns, candidly say that Its value exceeds that of all other Journals in which they are represented. The Advertiser has the freshness of youth and the ripeness of age, aud la therefore deservedly snccessful. CHABACTBIt OF ADVBKTIBBMBNTI. No advertisements are admitted whleh are not believed to be above question and of real value, und from parties so unquestionably re liable that the renders of Tht Adverliur will be safe in ordering them from any distance. To onr readers, the fact of its appearance here lias all the weight of endorsement and authority. Address, JAB. V. HARRISON, Forsyth. Georgia, Change of Schedule.
