Yesterday efening about dark, a negro, named Frank Lewis, entered the store of Messrs S. T. >fc 13. I’. Walker, for the purpose, as he stated, to purchase some oysters. Tak ing the bucket from the negro’s hand, Mr. Walker thought lie discovered one of his turkeys coßbeuled behind hf> h, I, fir \\l ker enrteuvored to get i••! inil him \ -< m- certain, but when Walker would turn the negro would turn. Finding that trick wouldn't work, .Mr. Walker dropped the bucket, accidentally of in stooping to pick it up, saw the 1 turkey. Frank was grabbed and Officer Loen tlial took him in charge. Cold as the night was, Aurora Lodge room j was iH ed last night with ladies, children and | jjeufc*, to enjoy the fun of the Christ mas lice. The tree was tilled with all aorta of presents, | ranging from two cents 1o live- dollars. Lit up . with different colored tapers, it presented a j 'beautiful sight. After \>. presents on the tree were disposed of a ra. 1: of two fine chromos took place. A beau tiful young lady of Third street was the fortu nate winner. The whole affair was a decided success, and the committee iu charge have our congratula tions for the able manner in which it was ear ned out. I’oetical. We saw a drove of one hundred fat ami sleek Kentucky black and white spotted hogs pass our office this morning, on their way to the slaughter pen, to backbones, sparcrihs, sau ages, souse, chitlins, brains, steaks, roasts, pig tails, soua-udder, hog's feet fresh, hog's feet pickled, and hogs in every style and at all hours. This funeral procession was truly mel ancholy. It had “sighs and tears and a touch of joy.” We sighed over it because we had to pay over consequential damages to Kentucky, cried over it like good old Moses, who stood on the mountain and looked away over in the promised land, saw them dealing out the milk and honey without having a ticket to get in, and rejoiced that some of our buffers would get the benefit of them if we were left out. Oircct Trade and Imiuigraiioa. The Legislative Committee met this morning at Brown’s Hotel, and was called to order by its chairman, Col. J. C. Nieliols. Mr. Bryan, the Secretary, read Icllers from Senator T. M. Norwood, Mayor thriven of Savannah, Gen. A. 11. Colquitt, Judge J). A. Vaeon, Edwin DeLeon, and Senator Jones of Baker county, expressing regret at not being able to attend the meeting. The Secretary then read an elaborate report of a committee appointed by the chairman of the Legislative Committee, on the subject of direct trade and immigration. The committee were in sessiou some time, daring which there was a general interchange of views. We have neither time nor space to give a report this evening. The following citizens of Macon were in attendance: Mayor W. A Iluff, Col. 11. 11. Jones, Col. J. E. Jones, Col. Titos. Hardeman, Hon. A. O. Bacon, Hon. C. A. Nutting, Col. L. X. Whittle, Rev. J. W. Burke, Rev. Win. Mcßay, Messrs. George Smith, J. W. Knott, Jno. B. Weens and T. G. Holt, Jr. Minor IteniM. Revue de la Mode, the justly fatuous fashion magazine, has arrived and can be found at Crown A Co's. Active preparations are being made by our young men for paying New Year's calls. Ele gant cards can be obtained at this office. The wind is cold and biting to-day. Lodgers at boarding-houses got a cold bite for dinner. The boys and girls will have a social dance to-night. The Rev. Mr. Clisby, a brother of onr es teemed city cotemporary, lias been permanent ly fleeted Pastor of the Presbyterian Church. That congregation has been without a regular preacher sine* Dr. Wills left, more than n year ago. There are several amenta of Mi plan ters in the city, trying to hire hands to go to that congestive chill country. We don’t wish them any succeas to speak of. So many (lie •at there that it takes a fresli stock every year to keep up the supply. It takes more than we have got to spare. The Gridin and North Alabama Ka.lroad lias been completed to Carrollton, the county town of Carroll county. The Bouthem and Atlantic Telegraph Com pany has completed its line from Macon to Columbus. T. E. Meyer has received the appointment of Agent at that city. “Walk in sir, kin I show you anything dirt sheep in this sthore in the way of Dry Coots." “Wal, yes Git behind that are counter. Now show me your tongue. Ton look bilious.” Many planters are in the city looking up a force for next year. As is usual, hands are hard to get at anything like reasonable rates. Solution, and hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Original Africa has a few more loafers and dead beats on hand who are not drawing wages. One hundred cargoes can get porinu asnt situations in Georgia. T his has been a cold Friday, but Use remarks of many young persona tint it is the coldest weather we have ever had doca not hold good.
