Bear Creek Collision!!
'1 lie terrible collision ou lUe Macon uud
Western roud, at the seventy-three mile
pout, on Tburwlay morning, Ims been an
nounced ; ami, ns to be expected In Midi a
time of excitement, many narrations of tlie
affair as a whole, and in mnny of its details,
have been set forth that nre not in accord
auce with the facts. It was the^ fortune ol
tho EmTon ok the Ertkiu’Misk to bo on
Uiard. heucc the slateuients following cun
lie relied upon as the result of personal
knowledge, or information gained upon
the spot at the moment, from tho best
sources.
The colliding trains were those leaving
Macon at 10 o'clock, r. m , Wednesday
night, uud Atlanta at - IS o'clock, a. m.,
oh Thursday morning. The former was
in charge of C. M White, Conductor, and
Alttxaudcr .Johnson, Engineer. It con
sisted of the engine Victory and tender,
* and four cars. First after the tender curiae
a passenger cur occupied by negro emi
grants, and was well tilled The scats
were reclining arm chairs, and for com
fort, in all resputl.s, equalled a sliiclly Ural
class car. Next came a post office, express
aud luggage ear, then mi ordinary pa cn
go. 0# and lastly, the sleeping cur.
j The latter train was under charge of It.
A. Darkle, Conductor, and Frank Mickle
jolm, Engineer. Jt consisted of the engine
Emerson Foote uml tender, u baggage, i s
l>rcst sml four par-enger csrs, in the order
titnnsl.
The schedule time would bring the ap
proaching trsius to lteur Creek station,
seventy-one miles from Mneon, mid thirty
two from Atluntu, where they would pass
eucli other. The duty of the train first nt
fhkt station was to uwnit fifteen minutes, 11
necessary, for the arrival of the other.—
The train from Mneon did uol observe this
rule, hut pasted on, and at the seventy
tliret mile station the lerrihlu collision took
place, In whleli seveu persons were instant
ly killed, and thirteen wounded more or
less seriously.
The w riter occupied lit# second pusscii
ger ear following the Express , was in n
reclining posture, with lace to the buck ol
the Mat, and right arm thrown over the
same, in a partial slumber, but not wholly
iiuconsi ious of the noise consequent upon
the movement of the train, when all of a
sudden he was startled to Ills feet uml to
full consciousness by a terrible crush, fol
lowed by tlio bounding of the ear upon
the cross ties. All was over before a sol
itary voice of alarm sounded Inside that
ear , and although many ladles were in
the same, but little excltemcut immediately
followed. All behaved with eommemla
hie presence of mlud. One lady only,
with an infant, occupying an udjoiniug
scat, seemed almost pal a lived with alarm
at the absence or her huslmnd, who had
been thrown from lila seat against the door,
fully ouo-tldrd the length of the ear.
On ascertaining that the smoke and dust
which so filled the car that few prisons
could be distinguished, was not the result
of lire from the stove, the writer was early
upon the ground to ascertain the nature of
things outside. The first that met his
eyes was the engineer. Mr. Micklejolm.
lying upon the ground, groaning in agony
of pain. The tlrst to reach him was
the conductor, Mr. Darkle, llefore he
would answer inquiries as to his persousl

It was creditable Inhumanity to witness
the general and unfeigued sympathy that
went out towards the nohow stricken
hearts of Hit) bereaved. There was a hith

there were three stalwart brothers cold in

surroundings well calculated to produce
