COLUMBUS CORRESPONDENCE.

Editor h'nter]>ri ■■—Nolliiug of unusal
interest presents itself to the uotiec of your
correspondent, yet we feel that a few lines
from us to-night would not ho unaccepta
ble to your many readers, to whom, in
these dull times, common place items are
better than nothing. Ah quiet along the
Chattahoochee, is always a pleasant sound
to our ears, ns we love quiet and peace
far more than turmoil aud strife, either in
business, politics or religion
Our excellent Mayor aud Hoard of
Health are using every precaution to pre
vent the introduction into our city of the
small pox and meuingetis. Not a single
case of either lias yet made its appearauce,
hut should they come in any form, prompt
measures will be taken to confine their
ravages to a limited circle. Every case
will he made public iu daily bulletins,
and no one will be left iu ignorance of the
location aud condition of every paticut.
This course must certuinly result iu great
good to all concerned, uud also give a
feeling of perfect relief to straugers who
may desire to visit Columbus.
You are quite right in your editorial
couiintuts ou Luwreucc Barrett the gifted
young tragedian, who is to play in your
city on Monday, Tuesday und Wednesday
uigtit We witnessed ou Friday night at
our Opera House, for the first time, his
magnificent rendition of Hamlet, and we
heartily join with you iu pronouncing him
the equal of Booth, or any other actor who
now assumes this role. We never saw a
more modest and conscientious artist, or
one who was more careful not to wound
the delicate sensibilities of a refined audi
ence by mouthing aud rautingaud egotist
ical displays. That our people appreciated
him in his great character, there was the
fullest testimony, as ho was called before
the curtaiu at the close of every act, and
tendered the heartiest applause ever be
atowril upon a worthy actor.
If the citizens of Macon wish to enjoy
a grand intellectual treat, aud also witness
the performances of the best Stock Com
pany that has been in these parts for many
year*, let them visit Halston Halt on Mon
day, Tuesday and Wednesday nights. They
will see a Hamlet that would have pleased
Shakespeare himself, and listen to the
great thoughts of the immortal bard with
which this play abounds, as they never
liateued fo them before. It will prove in
deed a feast for intellectual minds In
his personation of Cains Cassius, which is
equally well rendered, Mr Barrett as
sumes a liitfiTeut character, yet he sus
tains the role throughout with remarkable
vigor and fidelity. As he lias a most ex
cellent support iu this cast, there is uo
flagging of interest at any point in the
tragedy.
The charming young ladies of your city
are making frequent raids upon Coluuilhis
of late, amt we are glad to notice that
they are duly appreciated by our nice
young men Without being egotistical or
selfish, we think that Macon eau fairly
rank second to Columbus in the posses
sion of beautiful women. There are
some yottug gentlemen here, however,
who seem to have a desire to hang their
harps of love on the w illows that grow by
tbe banks of the Ocmulgee, who may pos
sibly dissent from this view, aud claim Ike
first place for your favored city, lie that
as it may, if they keep on as they have
begun, it is evident that some of your rar
est beauties will speedily be transplanted
within the borders of our own beautiful
and quiet city. TUe repot t that several
of these ladies are to join the Mardi Gras
excursion party that leaves here on lbs
dOth for New Orleans, has. as might have
been expected, filled the hearts of our
young men with an ecstacy of delight.
Thare is now every indication that the
excursion will be a most delightful and
attractive affair Great preparations are
being made, and all goes merry as mar

During the morning a conference of
about three hours' duration was held at
the Planters' Hotel, Judge John P. King,
President of the Georgia Railroad, partic
ipating. In consequence of the seal of se
erecy placed upon the proceedings, we are
unable to speak in detail of tlie objects of
the conference or to report the results of
the meeting. Wc understand the meeting
to have been called with a view to enable
tlie Security Company to establish a satis
factory pro rata rate of through freights
between the East and Southwest with
roads in connection witli the extended
line of railway under their control, and to
promote the adjustment of the sharp com
petition which lias been for some time
waged between tiiat Company and tlie
Central Railroad Company, which is un
derstood to have proved somewhat unprof
itable to tlie business interests of all con
cerned. Wc learn that there is a prospect
of a harmonious adjustment of ditfercnces,
which is doubtless equivalent to saying
that the Security Company will be per
mitted to extend its controlling iuterest

derstood to have been seeking for some
time.
I* B.—Since tlie above was put in type,
we have learned from a source which
ought to be informed that the object of the
meeting was to consider some plan for the
relief of the financial embarrassments of
the Alabama Western Railroad, iu which
corporation the Southern Security Com
