The True Btory of the Pint Telegram.
1 lie bill met with neither enccre nor
opposition in the Senate, but business
of that houee went on with discouraging
slowness. At twilight on the last evening
of the eeeeion. (March 3, 1843.) there were
119 bills before It. As it seemed impos
sible for It to be replied In regular course
befere Ibe hour of adjournment should
arrive, tbe Professor, who had anxiously
watched the tardy movements of business
all day from the gallery of the Beuale
chamber, went with a sad heart to his ho
tel, and prepared to leave for New York
at an early hour the next morning. While
at breakfast a servant informed him that a
young lady desired to see him in the par
lor.
There he rnet Miss Annie Ellsworth,
then a young school girl—Hie daughter of
his intimate friend, lion lleury L Ells
worth, the fret Commissioner of Patents
—who said as she extended Lor hand to
hint “I have come to congratulate you.”
••Upon whalV” inquired Hie Professor.
•• Upon the passage of your hill she re
plied.
“ Impossible ! lie fate was sealed at
dusk last evening. You must lm mistaken.
••Not at all,” site replied - Father
sent wc to tell von that > our bill was
passed. He remained until the session
closed, and yours was Hie last Mil but one
acted on. and was passed just live minutes
before the adjournment, and 1 am so glad
to lie the first one to tell you Mother
says, too, that you must come home with
me to breakfast.
Tho invitation win readily accepted,
and the juv of the household was un
bounded. Both Mr. and Mrs. Ellsworth
hail fully believid in the project, and the
former, in his confidence in it. and In his
warm friendship fur Professor Morse, had
spent all the closing hours of the session
iu the Senate chamber, doing wliat he
could to help the bill along- ami giving it
sll tbe intUicnce of liis personal and of
ficial position.
Grasping Ibe hand of his young friend
tho Professor thanked her again aud again
for bearingjiini such pleasant tidings, and
assured her that she should semi over Hie
wires the Him message as her reward.
The matter was talked over in the family,
and Mrs. Ellsworth suggested a message,
which Professor Morse referred to the
daughter for her approval, and this whs
the one which was subsequently scut.
A little more than a year after that time
Hie line between Washington and Haiti
more was completed. Professor Morse
was in the former city, and Mr. Alfred
Vail, his assistant, in the latter—lire first
iu the chamber of the Supreme Court, the
last iu the Mount Clare Depot—when, the
circuit being perfect. Professor Morse sent
to Miss Ellsworth for tier messHge. and it

K HO'J SHOWKTt HATH IN A IIOTKI. DINING
ROOM.
from Hie St. Louis Republican.]
The Western Hotel,corner of Urusdwuy
sud Carr streets, was the scene of a rather
peculiar and almost tiugical uflVay about
six o'clock, on last Saturday night The
names of the parties are withheld for ob
vious reasons The facts are substantially
these. As the guests aud boarders, upward
of fifty in number, were seated at the
tables iu the spacious dining room of the
hotel at supper, ons of the waiters, a
handsome black-eyed girl, entered the
reotn from the kitchen, hearing in her
bauds—-not a server filled with the sub
stantials of life—but a large tin pan filled
with hut dishwater, and walked deliber
ately up to one of the Iroarders sitting de
murely waitiug liis turn to he served, aud
without asking him whether he woQld
take tiali, mutton chops or steak, dashed
the couteut* of the pau on his head and
shoulders. As may be supposed, the
•plash created a general stampede. Her
drenched victim rose with the occasion
aud rushed after her in anything but a
gallant manner.
He seized a chair in the pursuit and
•truck her a blow with it over the head,
inflicting a severe though not dangerous
wound. No sooner was the first stroke
given Ilian other servant girls, the propri
etor and some of the guests, came to the
rescue, and caused an immediate sus
pension of hostilities. Tbe proprietor of
the Western says lie hss becu iu the hotel
business over fifteen years and he never
saw a hot shower bath administered in
his dining room before. This rather caps
anything he ever witnessed iu his line. —
The etlVay created a profound sensation
among the boarders, and there was hut
ons sentiment iu regard to it, and that
was that it was a great pity the water was
not hot enough to scald. Tbe mau is an
engineer on oue of the roads ruuning into
this city. It appears that he insulted the
girl, calling her had names several days
•go, and she resulted to this meaus tor re
dress. Had the poor waiting girl a broth
er the dastardly detainer would possibly
he brought to a strict account, lie hss.
without suy doubt, laid himself lisbic to
prosecution The character of the girl is
pronounced irreproachable and tier con
duct exemplary.
A Comic Incident.
AS INDIAN ANT MANAGER— JANAUSCHKK'S
BAGGAGE THREATENED WITH INMI'EV
The presence of Janauschek iu Wil
mington, Del. reminds us of a little story
I connected with the great actress, which
: hss never been in priut While Janau
, schck snd her company were making tbeir
receu t Southern tour, a funny incident oc
j curred at Opelika. Ala., Janauschek trav
els with fifty six pieces of baggage, sud
j the company usually lias a special baggage
car to itself.
At Opelika, a Mr Walcheil, who was
travelling with the company as manager,
saw a colored mau making toward the.
car. aud hailed him with the query :
• Whose baggage are you going to put iu
there ?"
The darkey replied, “Guano aacks"
Wachtell was simply horrified. The
idea of all the maguificeut costume of the
great actress becoming iai pregualed with
the mild odor of guano was enough to
startle the manager, and he rushed oil' ia
haste and rage to protest against any put
ting of of gsme in his special hag
gage car.
The baggage master said he did not
know anything about Guauo, and imme
diately weat to see about tbe matter, wbeu
they found that by Guano sock's the negro
had meant Jauauscheck s baggage.
Nor waa the mistake so bad a one as it
may strike one at first—at least we have
heard many worse attempts at pronounc
ing the German tragcdieuue's name.
