Thirty years ago a young man cutered
the city of New York in an almost penal

houses. To-day his name is kuowu

She was a native of Virginia, but had been

under General Washington in the war of
the Revolution. She also stated that she
remembered having seen Washington, La

Nw Powwkk.—A novel description of
gunpowder, possessing extraordinary pro

adopted by the Prussian artillery. It ie
compoeed of • certain proportion of nitre

in etore without fear ef explosion. To
render thia composition explosive, it ie ne
ceaaary to add a sufficient quantity of sul
phuric acid te make it cohere, and when
dried it ie ready for use. This composi

its manufacture, u d ia said to leave but

S4KXK IK AW AKTIST'S STUDIO T* DIF
FKREECE BETWEEN A PBOTOOBAIIKK
AND A PORTRAIT PAINTER ILLUM
TKD BY A UTTI.n ANF.( DOT*.
From the Raleigh News.]
Some day* ago a gentleman from oue of
the extreme Western countries called at
tha studio of W. O. Brown, who is one of
the most polite and polished gentlemen as
well as the finest portrait painter in the
South. Tbe stranger entered and was
courteously received. "Take a chair,"
said Mr. B. "Net much time to sit. stran
ger," was the refined reply to the Invita
tion. "I want n picture taken, cau you
do it?”
Pointing out portraits of different sizes,
Mr. B. enquired the preference of his cus
tomer. "The largest and the best; I have
tha money to pay down for it,” was tha
magnificent response. The canvass was
soon in readiness and the job regularly
commenced, and after an hour's sittiug
the subject was dismissed with an invita
tion to call again. He did so, according
to instroctions repeated bis visits for sev
eral consecutive days. At Isst tbe portrait
was finished. It suited to a T. and the
sitter wss delighted with the life-like, rep
roduction on tbe canvass of his pulchri
tude, and he gave vent to Ids satisfaction
tliusly Wall stranger. I told you 1 didn't
miud the expense, and I don't nuther, and
(producing a $lO note) gracious knows I
don't begrude this money.
Mr. Brown's face at this moment indi
cated some astonishment, but he soon re
covered himself and quietly informed his
visitor that his charge was $250. "The
h—ll you say,” yelled the terror-stricken
countryman. “Blacknall at the Yarbor
.ough House told me you would charge $lO
for your biggest size.” "I think there
must be some mistake," said Mr. Brown
"I do not think Ur. B. would so misiepre
sent me.” “I’ll swear he did,” was the
response. Mr. Brown betrayed here same
little symptoms of being vexed. "Oh I
you needu’t get mad, 1 atu right. Ain't
your name Watson I"
"No, sir ; iny name is lliown "
"Why the devil didn't you say so at
first *"
