quieting the child, the ]gd , u
nufsefy' the
trsusom over the door of Mr. Ht.'i room a
bright light, aud knowing the family were
all down stairs, her curiosity wae excited
as to the cause. She opened tin i door and
was astonished to see a man fumbling in
the drawer of the bureau. The fellow
had his face turned from her, but she waa
enabled to see that he was a bright
mulatto. The lady screamed, when the
burglar, who had taken the precaution to
leave open the window in the rt)om front
ing on Charlton street, sprang out upon
the balcony aud slid rapidly down to the
ground
Mr. Hamilton ran out oLthe house to
catch the fellow and gave the alhrui. Po
liceman Maher was on duty in the vicini
ty, and saw the burglar aa he reached the
ground. He Immediately gave chase,
firing at the fugitive twice, but unfortu
nately without effect. After pursuing
him several squares, the burglar darted
through a lane, near Liberty street, and
mangod to escape. On returning to the
room, the inmates discovered that every
drawer in the bureuu had been emptied of
its contents. Borne of the articles were
piled upon a chair, the burglar evidently
intending to carry them off, others were
strewn upon the floor. But for the timely
discovery, Mr. ll's loss would have been
much greater. Among tho booty with
which the thief succeeded iu getting away
with, were a very handsome gold watch
and chain, two gold hreasipius, a costly
necklace, several gold collar and sleeve
buttons, two gold three cent pieces (very
rare), a number of gold trinkets, several
odd pieces of Jewelry, ami anpleudid luce
shawl, a present to Mrs. Ilaiuillou and val
ued at #175, besides other articles which
cannot now he enumerated, but all iu
the aggregate valued at between SSOO aud
#GOO.
Scarcely had the excitement, which this
robbery gave rise to, subsided, when the
neighborhood was disturbed by the report
that the bouse of Octavus Cohen, Esq ,
diagonally opposite Mr. Hamilton's, bad
been entered and robbed. In this instance,
however, the lobbery was not discovered
uattl after tbe ingenious nocturnal roamer
had folded bia cloak around bis plunder
and silently stolen away. It is presumed
that be waa at “work” in Mr. Cohen's
bouse when tbe robber was discovered in
Mr. Hamilton's, aud took advantage of the
commotion and excitement there, tbe re
port of tbe pistol having gathered a large
crowd, there being numbers on the street
at that early hour, and effected his escape,
but well rewarded for bis venture.
Moat of the nrticles were taken from
Mr. Cohcu’s lied chamber, and consisted
of a gold watch nnd chain, two sets of gold
ear-rings, with breaat-pins to match, geld
acarf pin with carbuncle set, set of gold
sleeve buttons, gold studs, and a very
costly large tortoise-sbell comb, and other
trinkets, iu all valued at four hundred
dollars.
There gentlemen at once proceeded to
the barracks after tbe discovery of their
losses, arriving within ten minutes of each
other, aud put tbe matter iu tbe bands of
the detective.

Attempt to Commit Suicide.
Quite a startling little episode occurred
in town on last Monday night. It seems
that a young man who gave bis name as
James Taylor, a tobacco dealer from Mt.
Airy, N. C., accompanied by a gentleman
of like calling, whose name we did not
learn, put up at tbe Hoarding House kept
by Mrs. Haudrup, on Main street, to Stay
all night. About 8 or it o'clock, Mr. TANARUS.,
who appeared to be, from some cause,
quite dejected, expressed himself as tired
of llfo and openly avowed to bis com
panion bis iutention to commit suicide
In pursuance of this design, be repaired
to oue of tbe stores near by, where he
purchased a vial of laudanum. His com
panion followed him and managed to get
tbe bottle out of bis possession, but lie
subsequently purchased auotber bottle
aud succeeded iu swallowing about two
ounces ot tbe drug, before bis friend could
preveut it. As soon as it became known
that be bad taken the laudanum, Dr. P.
T. Pendleton was summoned, aud shortly
afterwards arrived upon tho scene.
Tbe Doctor found tbe man already sunk
iu what appeared to be, a deathly stupor,
but by tbe skillful and rapid application
of th* most energetic remedies, be finally
succeeded in arousing him. Ilail be been
half an hour later, be ia of opinion that
bis remedies would have been useless.
No cause is kuowu for tire deed, but as
the man is represented by bis friend as
having been very dissipated lately, it is
supposed that bis freak resulted from the
frenzy of drink.— Sparta Times.
Frightful Death—A Lad Crushed
Under a Train. —As the up passenger
train on the West Point road was leaving
the depot at LaGrange an Sunday even
ing, a lad by the name of Ed. Norris was
seen attempting to secure a position on a
portion of the wooden frame work on
which the car rests, and to which the
trucks are attached. It is supposed his
object was to secure a passage to this city
in that perilous situation, he being out oi
money. But in his effort to get upon the
frame he missed his hold and fell upon the
track. The brake, which reaches very
cloee to the ground, forced his body
against the rail, doubling it up and crush*
ing him horribly, lie died instantly. He
was about eighteen years old. and son of
Chap. Norris, a United States Deputy
Marshal, and at one time Sheritl of War
ren county, in this State.— Atlanta Sun.

A croupy youth in a neighboring town
having strongly objected to taking bis
medicine, was induced to make a hearty
meal of buckwheat cakes and " maple
eyrup,” but the latter proved to be hive
ayrup of squills. The boy said he “thought
something ailed the mo!asses the minuts
his lather told him he could eat all he
wanted to.”
Infanticide. —On Tburaday laat Coro
ner N. M. Hammond waa called upon to
bold an inquest on the body of a dead col
ored child which bad been accidentally
found In an old well npar Hilliard Insii
tute the previous evening. The child, when
found.waa wrapped up in such a manner as
to lead to the belief there had been foul
play practiced, and the officer waa aent
for. The Jury empanelled consisted of
Maj. D. G. Proctor, F. O. Mays, W. B.
Culpepper, W. A. Pye, C. M. Ham, and
John A. Bean. After a full hearing the
verdict rendered was that the infant was
suffocated by cotton being stuffed in its
mouth, and that the deed was committed
by Letbia Bledsoe, aided by the mother,
Martha Leggett, on the Ist inst. The
proof brought forward was strong against
the parties, and Lethia was at once lodg
ed in jail. The inhuman mother will, we
learn, follow as soon as she can be re
moved.—Monroe Acleertiter.
A well known German florist related to
me the other day, in a high state of irrita

“I have so much drouble with the ladies
when dey comes to buy mine rose ; dey

dey wants him moondly, dey wants him
fragrand, dey wants him nice gouler, dey
wants him eberydings in one rose. I
hopes I am not what you calls one uncal

dat ladies, Madam. I never often sees dat
ladies dat was beautiful, dat was rich, dat
was good temper, dat was young*, dat was
clever, dut was perfection in one ladies. 1

Knocked off the track. —On Satur
day evening, at West End, a man by the
name of O'DonoJy, a track raiser, had been
drinking rather freely, and after night
either sat dowujor laid down on the track,
and when the next train came along it
knocked him off. He was fouud Sunday
morning in a helpless conditin on the
side of the track. His injuries, though se
vere, are not necessarily fatal. — Atlanta
