Macon and Cincinnati Railroad
We publish In another column an extract
from a speech of Mr, Adams, the new
President of the Hail road, in which lie
preaeuta in a strong light to the people of
Mac ,u the necessity of this great enter
prise No intelligent niuu can look at
argument there presented without feeling
that the necessity for tfca building of this
or some other great through line connect
mg the Southern Seaboard with the great
West is of such vital Importance as to
enue its construction In ft few years.
We can see no good reasons why all
the companies interested in this route
should not consolidate under the charter
StHte aid, and with that assistance push
lhe woik rapidly forward. This section
of the State, we doubt not, will do its full
duty iu aiding any company which in
good faitli puts their shoulder to the wheel
aud determines lo push it to completion.
The road from the time it reaches Coving
ton will begin paying good dividends.—
Gwinnett Herald.
At the moment of writing we donotkimw
what action the Hoard of 1 rude will take
upou the question of building this road.
But perhaps at a later hour ami in an
other place its proceedings may be found.
But hero is one of tiie tirst counties in
Georgia willing to open relations of amity
and commerce with the city of Macou.
It is perfectly willing to do its part in for

There is a great significance in the
rapid combination that is taking place in
tiie United State* just now. The powers
of corporate monopolies are felt to such
extent that th people have grown restless
under their crushing aud exorbitant exac
tiona. and begin to look about them for
means of escape from unscrupulous de
mands that absorb all the productions of
labor. This is why the National Labor
Council has been organised as a necessity
to concentrate an opposing power, and
•top the process that crushes the energies
and checks the production or national
wealth. All must agree that a rule which
allows a few men to combine in a contest
that strews their battle-field with slaugh
tered fortunes is wrong, aud that high
transportation, which absorbs ah the earn
ings of the producer, is, to ssy the least,
unjust.
The New Latin Republics.
Tliu Washington Chronicle is not only
a paper if unquestionable and undoubted
ability, but is the organ of the present
Chief officer of the United Slates. In its
issue ofthe 21th we And the following
paragraph :
•* The statesmen nfthe new Latin repub
lic of France and Spain look to our great
Republic a* model. In their discussions
they constantly refer to the conditions, ar
rangements, and institutions under which
the United States lias achieved unprece-
dented success us a nation. It is possible
that they may follow the model too closely,
and copy the detects of our polity as well
as it* unquestioned excellencies.
It is true we have the most beautiful
and Hie most perfect theory of govern
ment ever invented by the wit of man,
but if • the statesmen of the new Latin
republics. ’’ attempt to apply R literally to
tin ir people and to their country, fuilute
is Inevitable. Montesguil tells us that the
reason Rome was great all her Kings and
Emperors were great men. Rut that lias
not been the true cause of our greatness
Great men we have Imd and have now in
that profusion called forth by the exigen
cies of epochs in our history. Rut it is to
~ur soil we are indebted for all our great
ness In spile <d all the errors of our
gieat mm the country has prospered.
Ami in spite of the errors committed be
lore our civil ur and still more after it,
the nation is richer, is more prosperous,
is more p rwu'Tul. to day than it lrus ever
beeu.
The greatest mistakes made by our pub
lic statesmen is that they do not sink the
politician in the statesman. Instead of
rising to the full grandeur and glory of
atatesmen, looking at legislation in the
light of philanthropy, and directing their
brain for the happiness of the country at
large, the President of our country and
the dominant majority of our Congress,
only see tlie traction and reject the whole.
Ho degenerate have the former honored
representatives in the Henate and House of
Representatives become, that it is a com
mon remark among the people when a
mail commits theft or murder, or some
form of heinous crime. - lie Is a fit mem
ber of emigres,s” or Hint lie is in training
for Congress.
If Monsieur Thiers aud Don Castellor
really wish to establish republican forms
of government in Franco ami Spain, they
must not • follow our model too closely,
as the Chronicle suggests. They must
educate their people to elect men of intel
ligence and ahovo that men of honor to
their Chamber of Deputies aud to their
Cortes.
And Don Castellor instead of sending
Captains Generals to Spanish islands with
insl%clions to hang at live minutes notice
every citizen who doubts the virtue and
the right of the mother country to rule,
must send commissioners to inquire into
their grievances, and if they have any in
fact promptly correct them. If not the
whole power of the nation must be brought
to bear against them. Tho governments
of Spain have followed a different policy
in regard to Cuba tor the past llvo years,
and the present President of the United
Wtates has seen fit to purchase a policy
not unlike lu the government of the South
ern States since the close of the war.

this place to the Savannah Republican,
uuder date of the 23d, says
Since tny ariival here I have been stu
diously endeavoring to comprehend the
make-up of this extensive city, and llnd
myself in a labyrinth. Situated in the
midst of a succession of hills, it cannot be
compared to anything I have seen in this
extensive country, and I claim to have
been something of a traveler in my (lay.
It is up hill and down dale, with very little
level ground in it. The streets are remark
ably wide, scarcely one of them that is not
about double the width of any street in Sa-
vannah, while the houses are much scat
tered and at considerable distances from
each other—a very good precaution in case
of tire—and it is no unusual sight here to
to see but oue building on an entire block.
There are many very handsome build
ings here, ami the grounds arranged with
considerable skill. The churches and the
postoftlce building are models of archi
tecture, reflecting the highest praise on
their projectors uud builders ; and a ride
to Tattnall Square to-day, showed me the
prodigious dimensions of Mercer Univer
sity, now in a forward state of completion
—the brick work apparently finished anil
the wood work of tho roof going on.—
The mess hall is already finished, and
when the University building is completed,
it will he quite au ornameut to Macon
Tattnall Square is the new park, but for
jack* of improvement gives no index ot
what It will be in the future. The fencing
is yet incomplete and tho unplowed
ground aud common trees makes it at
present unsightly. We passed an un
pleasant looking spot on our way out to
the park, made by the fire of last T ues
day morning, but in due time that will be
wept away and better looking buildings
perhaps erected in tho room of those that
were burned.
