The Modoc War.
We have made eotne Jocular remarks
about Ibis war, really not paying much
attention to it. Hut another idea occurs
to-day, and that is that a liaudful of lousy
Oregon ludiaus have, lor two months past,
not only deßcd the authority of the United
States, but itavo whipped ita army in tlie
field and its diplomats in council.
The valiant eoldiers Jn blue, it seems,
can fully maintain their reputation us
brave men, when invading a Houtbern
household at the dead hour ol midnight,
arresting, capturing and putting in jail a
white citizen, when accused of an insult
lo a nigger, hut when confronted with bul
lets and steel they cower like dogs, in the
physical question, and when met in diplo
macy they are whipped again I Captain
Jack is master of tho situation to-day.
No citizen of the Bouth, unless he is
either a knavo or a fool, is allowed a voice
in the government of his country or u po
sition in its army. And standing there
fore as a neutral, wc can the more com
placently look upou the situation.
The dispatches of General Catiby from
the “ lava beds ” sound very much like
those of John Hope, from Virginia, in 18G3-
lie up to dulo had accomplished particu
larly very little, but to morrow •• history
has to lie made. " And tho “ history
made " was m the one case peculiarly Hat
tering te Stonewall Jackson, and in the
other to Captain Jack.
, Mckutitue, thd war bulletin can go on to
state that a* an offset to the disasters, dis
grace and defeat in the Wcit, our armies
have everywhere been victorious iu the
South. The Kuklux strongholds have
been stormed at every point and taken at
the point of the bayouot.
Since the above waa written we have
read the Ailiowiug paragraph from the
chief editor ot the Augusta Chronicle and
Sentinel
The cowardly and absurd policy of the
Government in Its conduct of the war
against the Modocs is having its legiti
mate results. Captain Jack and bis bos
tile tribe can neither be bribbed nor
intimidated into making peace or leaving
their stronghold among the lava beds of
Oregon. Flushed with their easy vic
tory over the United States soldiers at
Lake Tule, tad confident of their abil
ity to successfully dofend their posltiou
from attack or .assault, they do not
seem to fear a conflict with a first
class {tower, hut rather court than avoid a
collision. Instead of pursuing a vigorous
course after the result of the first bailie
showed that negotiation was impossible,
the Government lias temporized for
mouths aud endeavored to accomplish by
means of peace commissioueis w hat could
only have been effected tlwough the ageu
cy of the bayonet.
Now the assurance is received that
Captain Jack has no intention of coming
to a peaceful settlement of the difficulty,
but has allied his forces several other
Indian tribee. and has declared his inten
tion of taking Uio offensive so soon as tiie
spring weather shall commence upon the
Pacific slope. We may then expect other
blunders aud aldtthmal disgrace.
|>hcs Road, neit her and the
Narsa PasioWre.
The court circulars of the present Gov
ernment are not posted upon Southern
bulletin boards. "1 am an alien in uiv
own land," remarked Mr. Toombs. And
hence such information as llis Excellency
may deem fit to deal out to us at lucid iu
tervals In tke shillings of liis cigars and
betwoepdarnhe.
And. tlierefbre. for a week or more past
our agent at Washington has been in a
cloud of tobacco smoke and befogged by
the fumes of whisky, as to the exact situa
tion ef the Macon Poetoflice. The oniy
thing poaitive received was that Belcher,
an Augusta man, had been nominated
to tbe Senate to supercede Elijah Bond as
Postmaster at Macou. Then came doubts
of his confirmation—rumors of “a ling"—
delegations, dispatches, and finally Deacon
Bond, himself; wfeut on to Washington to
eee if the President could not be induced j
to recall the nomination, and if not, then
loget the Senate lo reject it. Tho Deacon is
one of thoso old fashioned gentlemen, with
an honest heart, is not gifted in the “set
phrase of speech" but when he used to tell a
Crawford man that he would sell him one
hundred pounds of bacon for $9.25, the
exact amount of pounds were sure to be
found there when reweighed.
And hence, since lie has been postmas
ter, Macon has hud the greatest respect for
Elijah Hood. And therefore Macon has
heard of his sore travail recently, with
more or less regret. It regretted that
Deacon Bond in his old ago should see fit
to quit an honorable career as a merchant
and enter into the dirty game of politics.
Hut as we could have nothing but a radical
postmaster, lie was certainly our preference
above all the rest presented.
Kince the above was written we have
seen Jell Long, who has spent several
weeks in Washington trying to get the
nomination of Helcher rejected. He says
lie left W’ashiugtou on Wednesday, and up
to the hour of his departure nothing defi
nite had been given the public in regard
to tlie mutter The Benate had adjourned.
The confirmation* and rejections hud taken
place in secret session. If Helcher was
confirmed it was a dead secret.
.Mr. Bond, who was present on the
ground, remained over until Thursday >
and is expected in Macon this morning.
Hut perhaps the dispatches to-night will
give us something definite.
Long is of the opinion that Belcher has
been confirmed, but wouldn’t he surprised
that he was used by Whitely for an ul
terior object, and that Whitely never really
intended lie should have the office.
Helcher, the other day, telegraphed N.
I). Sneed that the Senate had confirmed
his nomination, and that he would be here
on Monday to take charge of the office.
That Sneed was to take Seifort’s place as
money clerk. Long says that Belcher may
have sent (hat dispatch prematurely.
