A Storm on tub Ocmvmibk. —At 2
o’clock yesterday afternoon a furious storm
of wind and raiu, accompanied with thun
der and lightning, swept down the valley
of the Ocuiulgee. When it struck this city
a miniature Algerian sand storm was raised.
For the lapse of tlfleeu minutes it was hard

first drops of the thunder cloud were
therefore very welcome, as they quickly
put au end to the African scune.

Tweed’s Kbsiqnatio* —For the scan
dalous manner in which this uopuiiished
rascal has been so long permitted to trifle
w ith the rights of his constituents and the
dignity of the Legislature, the Republican
Seuate is responsible. It had precisely
the same power to investigate his case in
January, 1872, which it first began to ex
eiclse this week. Ilia character was as
infamous, his gigauic frauds and thefts
were as notorious when this Senate met
to organize, as they are at prosent. Aud
yet the Senate lias forberne all action un
til it ia too late to elect a successor to
Tweed, and one of the Seuate district* of
the State is deprived of Its right of repre
sentation for two year*.— lf. Y. World
This notorious thief and scoundrel has
not only disgraced human nature but the
democratic party, claiming to be especially
honest. Ho has gone for a long period
uuwhlpped of justice, for the reason that
his money was sufficient to overcome any
law where he resided. This is not so much
the fault of a party as it is the laxity of
morals in the community in which Tweed
has stolen money by the million. And
what is the moat shameful part of the
brazen faced rascal ia his appearance in
tho Legislature of New Fork, where lie
impudently proposes te make laws for the
government of the pcoplo i He out Herods
Herod. He rivals Bullock.
Capt. White's Citt.—Captalu Jack
White who used to run the Macon and
Western Uailroad, aud whose stockhold
ers wish he was back there now, started
a tow a on the road which the Bainesvlllo
Gazette calls the *• Embryo City of Mil
ner.” And then
“Never perhaps in the history of any
county has a town spruug up more like
magic than Milner. From a little insig
nificant doggery and railroad station, it
hma grown until uow it is one of the live
liest villages in the county. We know of
no place that has improved mere rapidly.
It lias one of the neatest country churches,
one of the beet schools, several as good
business bouses and a citizenship that will
rank with any towu in the State. Capt.
White, who has dene more than auy oth
er person to develop this place, will soon
have completed two of the best business
houses in Middle Georgia. Milner will
yet be a city, mark the prediction.”
But ws have too many cities now, Mr.
Bartlesville cotemporary. Ws have an
abundance of shopkeepers, merchants,
bankers, and bar keepers Wc now chiefly
need grubbers, Uoers, splitters of
rails, men who can split one hundred aud
fifty roils a day, and t&ko the pulpit of the
plain country church Sunday morning,
read a text from the Gospel, and then tell
men in plain language how they have
been cheating, swindling and lying during
the week. “ The harvest is plentiful but
the reapers are few.”

Huron A Kaoxville Railroad.
We heard yesterday of an effort being
mode to compromise Hie opposing inter
ests—to amalgamate the two companies—
each mte proposing to build a road from
here to Knoxville. This is a step in the
right direction. We hope that the repre
sentative men of these companies und
their friends will stop their acrimonious
discussious. Meet together in a spirit of
good will and concession, and finally bury
the hatchet and Join hands in the great
proposed enterprise. It is absolutely ne
oessary for them to do this. The commu
nity at large know but little and care less
about the merits of the controversy. They
want a road to Knoxville. And if these
gentlemen are not prepared to lead them
in the undertaking, they must give way
to soaiehody who will. They are wast
ing very valuable time, nud now whilst
the matter is ripe fur action, action is do
mended on every hand.

The civil in (Jut* seems to have
sallied into regular barbarity. We copy
the following dispatch :
“Nkw Yoiik. March 2'J. —A Havana
dispatch Rays that In s recent engagement
on the otliei side of Old Tracha, between
Agrsmonte and the Bpanisb forces, the
former took sixty prisoners. He shot fifty
nine of tlii'm. One was spared and sent
back to take n message to the Spaniards,
informing them that, Monarchists or Re
publicans, had acted with inhumanity to
the insurgents, that therefore the insur
gents would give no quarter.”
Nor cun any one blame the struggling
Cubans for taking revenge upon the bloody
and cruel Spaniards. They murder every
prisoner taken, Htid often put to death cit
izens even suspected of sympathy for them.
They have, therefore, lost the respect of
tlie civilized world. The people of the
United States are almost a unit in wishing
the Cubans success. Aud they would have
their Government furnish them substantial
aid if they could.
But Spain is obliged in the end to lose
Culm us it has lost everything else in the
Western world. It is the weakest govern
ment in Europe making pretensions to
greatness, and the meanest.

Washington, March 29.—Indian Agent
Daniels writes to the Department under
date of March 20, from Red Cloud Agency,
Wyoming Territory, as follows : “ I would
respectfully inform the Department that

cy; also that Sitting Bull, No Neck and

their way to this place. Sitting Bull, and
his party remained there to hear from
these Indians 1 have sent them tobacco

assuring them of the good will of tho Gov

be taken to secure the friendship of tlicso
people, considering their importance in
connection with the Northern Pacific

“ 1 have sent them tobacco and clothes.”

Cincinnati, 0., March 28.—Advices
front Frankfort, Kentucky, to-day, give
notice of* veto by the Governor of the re
ceut act of the Legislature, amending tho
charter of the Cincinnati Southern Kail
road, ao as to allow counties along its lino
to vote mouey to purchase the right of
way aud erect depots.
This ts the road wo are trying to con
nect with at Kuoxville. The Louisville
and Nashville railroad has fought it from
the beginning aud is fighting it now. That
concern looks upon the State of Kentucky
as does the Central, I’innsylvania, its own
property. Had it not exerted ail its power
three years ago, and obtained a defeat of
tbe charter and right of way, the road
would have beeu well nigh completed to
day.
This road ia not intended to stop at
Knoxville. Its ultimatum is either the
scacoasl in fact or the tapping of seme
gtand railroad centre like the city of
Macou. with lines already constructed
to tha Atlantic, to the Gulf and to States
West, South aud East
Aud it is perhaps fortunate for u* that
these delays in the great work have been
made, for they have given us au oppor
tunity to *o perfect our organization, to
complete a portiou *f the work and hold
out such inducements as shall force the
Cincinnati road to adopt it at a portion
and the concluding link in its proposed
connection
