To Hi* Honor the Mayor and the City
Council of Macon ;
Oknti.Kmkn—Having been unexpect
edly called away to Columbus on Impor
tant business, and therefore unable to at
tend the meeting of your honorable hotly
on Tuesday evening, I beg leave respect
fully to give my reasons lor not signing
the report of Finance Committee, relative
to the proposition of Mr. McDurney, with
regard <to Macon Armory, etc. In the
first place, it proposes a partnership with a
company aud giving a valuable building
of brick, 600 feet in the maiu building and
other valuable out buildings, with 20 or 22
acres of lund of city lots against 600 or 700
acres of very poor land made valuable only
at an immense outlay of money in dams, etc.
to unit the waters of the river through a
canal, in the second place an udvuucu of
cash to the amount of $60,000 or if in
bonds, $70,000, and Ibis would be only the
comineuccmeut—the city to ruu the risk
of protila, and if losaea result, or perhaps
failure, then the city to lose all aud likely
more bosides. In my hutublo opinion
the city should not engage in any com
mercial undertaking or partnership iu
manufacturing or (he purchaso aud sale of
merchandise, or any speculative enterprise
when loss may result to the tax payers.
The sale of the building, ou reasonable
terms to a Manufactming Cos , would be
much more desirable and the company
would feel much more interest iu the en
terprise when the property would be their
owu ; but for the city to enter into so
vast and dangerous undertaking might
lead to ruiuous results, bankrupt us aud
render onr dwellings, our lots aud our
stores of little value except to tlio bond
holders who would thus hold mortgages
ou whatever we might possess in the
city. 1 trust you will excuse mo. gcullemeu.
for thus explaiuiug uiy views, which as
a sworn otllcer it is uiy duty to do,
and you who have so jealously guarded the
interests of the city w ho will take a proper
view ol the matter aud save our city from
so dangerous an undertaking. All of which
is respectfully submitted.

This great statesman went down to his
grave when the writer was not a journal
ist. Else another ami perhaps a more
lengthy tribute would have been paid his
memory. It is strange how quietly the
real heroes of the ship which has jnst
passed through the storm are so quickly
forgotten, mingle with the people on
shore and their statements, however mod
estly spoken, looked upon with the dull
est interest. And yet could they have seen
the sailors before the mast when the ves
sel was in tho vortex of the cyclone, they
would ho looked upon as heroes indeed.
And heuce it was that this great man, not a
sailor, but holding a position on the quar
ter deck, passed away with so little ro
mark.
But a literary society to which he be
longed has passed the following tribute to
bis memory. And its resolutions arc
transferred to our columns with the greatest
pleasure :
COMI'IiIMENTAItT KESOLPTIONS IN MEMO
HT OK HON. ALKKEO IVKHSON.
At a late meeting of the Cliosophic So
ciety, of Princeton College, N. J„ the fol
lowing resolutions were unanimously
adopted :
Whereas, Intelligence has reached us
of the decease of the lion. Alfred Iverson,
ex Senator of the United States from Geor
gia, and graduate of the Class of 1820,
therefore
llesolved, That by his death Clio Ilall
has lost an honored graduate, emiueut
alike for his high culture and scholarly
attainments while a student, and for his
distinguished career as a Judge of the
Bupreme Court of Georgia, and a promi
nent member of both Houses of Congress.
Kesolved, That, while deeply regretting
this sad event, we point with pride to this
worthy son of Clio Hall, so beloved on
account of bis many attractive persoual
qualities, se admired and respected for bis
firm ad Iterance to whatever he deemed to
be the right.
ltesolved, That the sympathy of this
Hall be cordially extended to the rela
tives and friends of the deceased.
Kesolved, That a copy of these resolu
tions be sent for publication to tbe Savau
nah Republican, New York Observer, and
Princett u Press. G. H. Duffield,

From the UrifUu Mews we learn, that
last week, the petition in bankruptcy of
the Hou. Enoch Stedtuau, of Ncwuau,
was tiled with Register Murray. The
assets, consisting of real estate and fac
tory property, amounting to $140,000,
which will fully cover his liabilities, if
they can be made available. There were
some executions against him, which would
have sold out his property at a sacrifice
aud left debts liangiug over him, and he
preferred surrendering his property aud
starting anew.
