The cultivation of grape* on n large

comparatively new buaincee, but 1* likely
to lucre*** quite rapidly. • Portugal, witli
but three and a half millions of inhabit

gallons of wine. The American product
of tbe year 1071 is estimated as follows
after a carefal examination of every means
of Information a|cottimand : Missouri pro
duced 1,000.000 gallon*, Illinois about
1,250.000 gallon* ; New York, principally
Bieubeu county, the most of the product
of whicb I* devoted to the manufacture ot
sparkling wines, 2,250,000 gallons; Ohio,
including the islands of Lake Eric and
Lake Shore, probably 3.000,000 gallon* ;
the /wnaiuiug States east ot the Rocky
Mountains hardly 1,000,006; and Califor
nia alone 7,000,000, a great part of w hich,
however, is distilled into brandy.
The somewhat extensive house of J B
Lithgow A Cos., of Louisville, has failed
and gone into liquidation. If we remem
ber right It was a tin and stove shop upon
rather an exteusive scale ; at least whilst
looking upon various stoves we have seen
the brand of that Arm. Anyhow, the
concern has caved in ; and the assets, us
usual, are much larger Ilian the liabilities,

An ingenious Individual with a turn
for mathematics has found that there is
one pig to every one and four tenths men
in the United Blates. There i* nothing
singular at all that every uiau should have
a pig, but when four tenth* of a mau buy*
a pig, the eveut becomes a matter of deep
interest to everybody who strives after
a higher civilization. The mind instantly
pictures this four tenths of an individual
gutting home with that pig and bucking
up against fences and splashing iuto the
mud, aud kicking at the animal just enough
to miss It aud awing otf his balance, and
while we have a long array of piecedeuts
to show that no whole man ever drove a
pig in the right direction, we cun well
believe that four tenth* of a nun wrest*
ling with that animal would afford a spec
tacle that would be nourishing to the last
degree. Thle, of course, i* confidential

A writer for the New Orleans Picayune
having exhausted every other subject, has
rcomtnenced explaining tho science of
drinks. In getting iuto the “ mixologlcal
genius " of the subject, ho thus vanishes
iuto the thinnest mist:
•• The worship of Miuihe, the verdant
uytuph who was ravished by Pluto, aud
who was thereupon transferred into a
growing plant of mint, Is one not forgotten
in this city of celebrations It commences
properly in the spring season and requires
the carrying to the lips of a dozen or so
mint juleps, as Pluto did a dozen times a
day, the original Miuihe. Borne body wlio
introduced the drink to Queen Victoria
years ago. said it was a New Orleans dis
covery, the invention of some mlxological
genius, equally imbued with classical lore
and whisky, and was probably tbe same
chap who Uught the old hotel keeper to
drink green iu hit liquor uutil lie died.’ 1
“Classical lore and whisky" as an idea
* Is about tbe best poetry we have read
lately, especially taken with the epitaph,
“ liquor until he died."
The Farmers In Cnnnrlf.
The movement of farmers in the North
weal against railway monopolies aud ex
tortions ia spreading w ith great rapidity.
There is now a Contention of them sit
ting at Springfield, 111., and the spirit per
vading it Is a settled determination to break
them dowu by forcing such legislation as
shall protect them in matters of transpor
tation. The third resolution adopted runs
thus
•• That we hold, re.-oKe and declare that
this despotism which defies our laws,
pluadeP our shippers, impoverishes our
people and corrupts our Government, shall
Ire subdued aud marie to subserve the pub
lic interest at whatever cost. ”
And the last resolution of the jrlalform
•ays:
“That we regard it as the undoubted
power aud the imperative duty of the
legislature hr pass laws fixing reasonable
rates for freight and passengers without
classification of roads, and that we urge
upon our General Assembly the passage
of such laws.’*'
It will come to this here as well as
there the first thing onr railroad men
know. We believe our Legislature now
claims the right of limiting the rates of
passage, aud the right to regulate the
charges upon freight is precisely the same
thing in theory aud in law. '
The Lair Niurm-llx ('sarse and
■Seat ruction.
Our editorial table this morning is filled
with the fearful and disastrous details 'of
the storm of Inst Tuesday. Born in the
Mexican sea, it came ashore on the south
ern coasts of Alabama and Georgia, and
from thence swept eastward, dealing more
and more destruction on every hand, and
dually culminating in tlie awful scenes of
tho loss of the steamship Atlantic on the
Nova Beotian coast.
From Florida to Tennessee the Stale of
Georgia felt its hand more or less heavily !
All iu details will never be written, but
whenever a daily press is published, or a
weekly issued, enough is gleaned to know
that the devil had basiness ahead that day
and that night.
The New York Ileruld says that the
“origin of the Southern und Western
tornados has been involved in much
uncertainty, but the present instance gives
a clue to the explanation The return
trade wind, which begins to biow from
the southward in or a'liout the thirtieth
parallel at thin season, is knowp to be a
rapid descending current; and, os it is
forced northwaid, confined between meri
diaus which converge aud gradually close
in, it bursts open for itself, iu iu fury, a
channel to the North. The effect
is similui to that of the bore at tbe
mouth of livers, where the broad aud
swift tidal wave is forced into a nar
row space as into a cul tie-sac. The Fri
day tornado must have had a barometer
nearly as low as that of the celebrated
Natchez tornado of May 7, 1840, when
houses were blown, or rather burst, out
waid, by the sudden removal of the exter
nal atmospheric pressure, und over three
hundred persons killed. The fact that
the Canton meteor was in the evening aud
at night, and that the usual time of such
phenomena is from three o'clock in tke
afternoon to nightfall, when the sun's daily
action on the atmosphere has reached its
maximum disturbing eifoct, together with
the brief duration of the outburst—from
two to five minutes—and tho general track
they pursue from southwest to northeast,
all go to confirm the view suggested by
this most recent hurricane.”
The Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of
Mexico invariably generate the awful
cyclones with which we arc familiar.
They usually follow the course of the
great trade winds of the Atlau'ic and after
performing their mission expend tiieir
force upon the west coast of Africa.
In Ids ‘Thysicnl Geography of the Sea,"
tho immortal Mr. L. Maury, as well us
Admiral Senimes in his book -Afloat and
Ashore, or the Alabama and the Sumpter,”
have given us great light upon the theory
of these awful atmospheric disturbances.
We have never listened to a more perfect,a
more beautiful or u grauder description
of one of these cyclones than that given
In his lecture here of the “ pirate”
Raphael Senimes.
Tint Death ok Mrs. Bknnktt. —The
death of this lady, which took place iu
Haxouy on tho morning of the 31st of
March, recalls to mind many stormy scenes
of the life of her husband, tho editor of the
Herald. She often was the victim of the
severest and most ungalliuit criticism.
And we remouiber once hearing lior name
used in a debate in Congress In a wholly
inexcusable manner by Itoger A. I’ryor.
Her husband was in many respects an ex
traordinary man—in the main thoroughly
unprincipled—but that was no reason why
she should have been so bitterly assailed
Captain Jack's forces fifty
three. It is reported that Catiby is sur
rendering them and they will soon lie
forced to surrender Cincinnati En
quirer.
Is that a fact ? Wtiy we thought they
amounted to at least one million aud a
half with breach loaders utterly unknown
to our science, “And they will soon be
forced to surrender," is a matter of course
if it is news wo have been hearing for
three mouths.
Tub Bauron and Decatur Duel.—
A few day# ago there came very near be
ing a duel between two editors of Norfolk.
Va.it being prevented by a Magistrate.
The following is writteu of the principals
to it :
James Barron Hope, one of the hostile
editors, is a poet of some destinctiou, who
belonged to the Confederate navy, and is
a grandson of Commodore Barron, who
killed the celebrated Commodore Decatur
in the memorable duel at Bladensburg.
Hope also, many years ago, fought a duel
at llamplou with a cousin named Jones,
both Iwlonging to the navy, and in which
each was wounded. Commodore Barron
acting as second. The pistol used in these
duels are in possession of Captain nope,
and were to have loen used iu the ducf
just prevented Mr Walters, tlie chal
lenging party, is a young journalist, who
had recently taken charge of the Journal.
