Halifax, April 3—Home Incidents ol
the diuHOter, tut related Ity the survivors
Hie harrowing. At one time during weary
watch before dawn, the fore boom broke
loose from its fastenings, and swinging
around instantly crushed to death nbout
two hundred persons gathered on the
house on deck. Several passengers are
reported drowned Ity life boats which, not
lieing piojterly managed, overturned and
drowned Hie unfortunate before assistance
could be rendered. Home who hail life
buoys, and endeavored to ranch the rock
by means of a line from the vessel, not
having them properly adjusted, but on the
lower part of their bodies were found
Hoating with their heads down, and in
this way many were drowned be I ore reach
ing the rock One young man with no
clothing save a shirt and vest, uml two
life buoys fastened arnuud his Itody, leaped
into the WHter and attempted to reach the
rock. The passengers who give this state
iin'iil say they endeavored to dissuade
lorn from the attempt, hut lie persisted,
and wlieu finally they were rescued and
lauoe i ashore, the body of the young man
was the first they saw , and life buoys were
siill on the body. Among the passengers
was a unlive of the old country who has
been in the United Stales for some time,
and lately returned to England to bring
his wife and faiitily of five children to ills
home in tiie new world The father,
mother and children all perished.
NhW Yokk, April 3.—Harrowing de
tails of the awful scenes attending the
loss of the steamship Atlantic continue to
be received. All Hie women who were
asleep at the time the ship struck were
drowned in their berths, the heavy seas
which constantly poured over the vessel
anil filled tier, preventing them front
reselling the deck. Home women showed
remarkable presence of mind and appre
ciation of the awful situation; only reached
deck to be washed into the sea uiid
drowned. One woman, following the ex
uni pin of the sailors and stronger male
passengers, took to the rigging, uml was
lashed there to keep her from being swept
away. Hire fio/.e to death in that position
soon after. Hix men on shore wrote on a
blackboard, “ cheer up, bouts are coining
to your assistance,” and the announce
meat wus responded to with hearty
cheers from the ship. After half an hour
of awful suspense, men were seen on the
island carrying a boat over file rocks, and
soon it was launched and tank off three
I Mint loads frsm the outlying rock.
While rescuiug those men, Captain Wil
Hams uml the pnasuMgerf culled loudly to
the crew of the boat to come to the ship
and take them oil' thst, as they were in
m >l itutuiucul danger, the Captain saying,
•• 1 will give five hundred dollars for
every boat load rescued." The boat after
wards made tor the vessel and took ofl
ta <> boat loads. Halt au hour later an
other boat came aud rescued many ol
tb<*e clingiug to the rigging. Third officer
Brady, who hail succeeded iu reaching
m. re over a line carried from tiie vessel
by himself, organized a crew aud materi
ally aided in the work of rescue.

1 found Favorable 1* irt. a place which
fisherman have to look out and signalize
boats. 1 then called out for help. 7wo
old men ami a boy came to our assistance,
and 1 went to a house with them and pro
cured a line and then retraced my steps
to tiie beach, where I saw a lot of thopus
sengers anil crew upon tills rock. Speuk
man, the Quartermaster, swam towards me
witli a line from tiie rock, and 1 hove my
line and caught him, and pulled him
aslioie. As soon us 1 had done so, we
hauled in Hie line which he had from the
rock, uud made fast the end of my line
to it, so as make make it stronger. As
soon us I got Hie Hoc made fast.l told those
on the rock to come on ashore, one by
one, us I would save them. The first mau
saved this way, I do not know, but
be second was Air. Brady third officer. I
saved in this manner about 70. In some
instances, as the line was some distance
overhead, and the persons too exhausted, 1
had to reach down and pull them up, and
some 1 bail to go into the water after,
which was out of my depth. In these
cases the old men would drag me and tiie
man 1 had rescued ashore. I remained
there front 4 o’clock till 9, when I fell
down through exhaustion, One of the
stewards anil somebody else relieved me,
anil 1 was carried to tiie house, where I
was kindly cared for. As soon as I recov
ered sufficient strength I was conveyed in
a boat in tin* main land, aud went to Mr.
Kyan s, the Magistrate, where I was kindly
treated and attended to, as I had the
cramp.

The Wreck ef li Atlantic.
A striking rebuke to the pructica
jokets of the Ist of April was given this
time *So world renowned has this silly
custom become of practieing sells upon
that day, that when the news reached
shore and even reached New York that
the steamship Atlantic had been wrecked
and seven hundred persons either drowned
or lost in more awful forms, people thought
the story a hoax. The Herald, the Times,
the World, the Sun, ail published tiie first
dispatches with the saving commentary
that if this was •• a sell” they did not
prefer to lie considered among the sold.
When the p-.m, half frozen and half
naked third officer of the once splendid
steamer reached the first telegraphic station
lie found difficulty in getting any one to be
lieve his tale of horror, because, forsooth,
it was tiie Ist day of April ; and when his
dispatches wore received at various points
begging for assistance aud for boats to
rally to tiie rescue, it was still the first
day of April, and those who at any other
time would have responded with alacrity
did so reluctantly.
We never jet saw any sharper point in
a practical joke practiced on that than
any other day fur that Hole reason.
There is really no harm intended, of
oonme, but in tlur iiiHiuuut those who
ipvt to indulge iu such punt time lture re
uctved it verv sevure rebuke
