GA, AI’HIL 13. 1573. American Ship Building Among other branches of American Industry which liaa been filtered and re suscitated by the Republican party Is the building of ships, both of wood and of iron. For a liuis the iron ship builders ou the Clyde appeared to monopolize tho construction of sailing vessels and of steam ers, but of late their reputation has been on the wane. Meanwhile their vessels aud their steamers have not beeu successful and the recent loss of the Atlantic cannot add to diminishing. popularity of iron vessels. On theotherhsnd.lt is asset ted that for the first time since the commence ment of our civil war American wooden abips can be aoid in Loudon, or in Liver pool, at their fiill value, and that the ship yards oa the New England coast again echo with the ringing of the broad-ux. Let tho Republican party have due credit for having brought this resuscitation about.— Washington Chronicle. False ! false ! false ! From beginning to end. Your party has not only com pletely aud absolutely destroyed American ■hip building, but has transferred all, or nearly all, toumige to foreign bottoms. You have not a mercantile steamship, or sailing vessel scarcely ou the oceans of the world to-day except those iu the ser vice directly or indirectly of foreign com panies. Of all the great lines now run ning to New York from Europeau ports, you have not one single representative steamship. And in the sailing vessels you can boast of nothing more than u few coasting schooners. And even there you would have none were it not for the law that no foreign owned ship can curry freight from one of oar forts to another of law today and Hi it. ou 'i - w 'U ,io Manzanim-a, the capture of which by the Cuban patriots is confirmed, is a sea port town ou the of the island, having a good harbor aud consid erable trade in cofTce. sugar and fruit. The steamers from Hantiago de Cuba usually touch at Manzamlla, and the state ment that with the place the patriots have taken a large amount of money, war muni tions and provisions is wholly credible. Undoubtedly, as the Hpaniaids have been permitted to supply themselves with arms and powder iu the United States, while the patriots have beeu denied the privilege, many of the war munitions captured were manufactured In tills country. Spain is now further off than ever from suppress ing the insurrection, after an enormous outlay and loss of armies, while the Cap tain General sends to Madrid for troops to supress rebellion among even the Span iards of Havana. The Cubans have u brilliant prospect of success. Having struggled this long, through such misfor tunes, against such inhuman warfare, and new w inning these signal victories, it i* not at all likely that the Cubans will abandon their struggle. They will win. When they shall have achieved indepeud ence, how grateful they will be to th< United Stales for the magnanimity we have shown to a brave people fighting lm riddance of chattel slavery and the rob beries of a decaying power beyond sea ! At Louie QuiOr, If your government bus shown one sin gle spark of sympathy, or one gracious smile upon these struggling Cubans, we have utterly failed to see it. The only attention your Egyptiun Spliynx. who now occupies your l'resideu tin) chair liar ever paid to tho atfors of Cuba is his regular arrival of Ilavuua ci gars i Give him plenty of these aud they fight on and fight ever, without illicillng the slightest attention of your Chief Magis Irate. Rut like the balance of the people of the United States, wo hope these Cubans may whip the Spaniards. m In our scrap of history yesterday ws stated that the engineers of the State Road when first contemplated adopted a line from A Manta to Cliattannooga. It should have read from Macon to Knoxville. Or iu ether words they then - saw what we do to-day that the true route from the in terior of Georgia to tiie northwest was over the pmposed line of the Macon and Cincinnati Railroad. Fir* Department Parade to he Pot ofk —I’rizicb. —The annual parade of the Columbus Fire Department was fixed last week for the 22d. Tho officers think, however, of postponing it until May 6th, and will propose the matter to the Hoard of Control, next week. This will be done for the reason that Capt. Johnson, the agent, lias written for a champion self-act ing engine, and all, being desirous of see ing it tested, deem it best to delay the pa rade until it arrives. The engine consists of a light truck, wiiich two men can draw. It is provided with two large and two small tiro extinguishers, one hundred ami filly feet of hose, four extension lad ders, aud a supply of axes, picks, lanterns and buckets The cost of the large size is fl5(IO If the city is pleased with it, Capt. Johnson will sell the affair for a much less sum. It would add much to the interest of the parade if the citizens would get up prizes to be contended tor. Hy having ruuidng trials between the hose squads, all the companies could take part. It will tend to create enthusiasm iu the Depart ment and make t tie members feel t hat (tie citizens take pride in their efficiency aud discipline.— Col Hun.
