' The Chinese Six Companies are daily in
receipt of applications for laborers to go
to the Southern States, notably Missis

control over their people’s labor, and
have never brought or caused to be
brought one of their countrymen, and
have never contracted their labor or col

soever, the press of California to the
contrary notwithstanding.

lowing news:
“Hono Kong, March 17.—The passage
of the anti-Chinese bill and its snbse-
qnent veto sttraot great attention among
tbe natives. The vernaonlar papers of
Hong Kong and Shanghai, eBpeoially the
former, are extremely bitter against tbe
proposed measure, and claim tbe protec

piotures of future relations and the exten

They exaggerate the oonseqnenoes to

Great excitement prevails over the dis

The newly opened Chinese ports,

efforts of the native merchants.
Insurrections continue as before, and
there is no material change in the posi

—The Annual report of tbe American
Steamship Company, recently made at
Philadelphia, is noc very encouraging.
The gross receipts daring 1878 were
$876,243, and the operating expenses
1684,305, lsaviog as net earnings $191,-
937. These net earnings were all con
sumed by ageney, advertising and wharf
expenses and tbe interest on the compa
ny’s debt, and, in addition, $4,943 m .re,
whioh is tbe deficit on the year’s opera
tions. Compared with 1877 the receipts
show $61,428 decrease, and the expenses
$131,432 decrease. There would have
been a email surplus shown on tbe busi
