ter deaths amount to 84.
Two men were thrown from Second Avenue
cars on Sunday by two roughs. One is dead
and the other will die. The murderers are at
large.
David W. Kulcher, associate editor of the
Irish World, is missing since Sunday, and it is
feared he was lost on the Westfield—the Staten
Island ferry boat which exploded on that day.
Sax Feanctsco, August 2.—The America
sailed with General Capron and a party of 300
Chinese and 47 passengers. The British ship
Napier was totally wrecked on Baker’s I-land.
Chicago, August 2.—The White Stockings
boat the Mutuals 15 to 4.
New Yobk, August 2.—The Atlantics beat the
Savannah Club 42 to 18.
City of Mexico, July 2G, via Bbashzae Crrr,
Texas.—There are still donbta about the result
of the elections. The permanent deputation of
Congress wants a new election at various
places where there were informalities.
A revolutionary movement now exists against
the government in Tobnsco. The cause is local,
or, rather, personal. Rumors are current that
Governor Diez ref nsos to give up to the Federal
Government, the guns of Oaxacu, captured in
1867. It is probable Generals Rocha and Ala-
tore will go with troops to enforce the delivery.
London, August 2.—Papers have been seized
at Marseilles relating to a purpose on the part
of the internationals (Communists) to fire the

New Yoak, August 2.—The Central Commit
tee of the order of the Sons of America rejected
a proposition to change the ritual so as to admit
ail persons opposed to Roman Catholicism.
Wilmington, Del., August 2 —A freight and
peach train collided at Wilmington, on the Read
ing Road, to-day. The engineer was killed and
several brakemen hurt. The trains were badlv
wrecked.

Pahis, August 2.—It is rumored that Remusat

Roux, the leader of the abortive communist
insurrection in Marseilles, has been condemned
to death. The only French prisoners now in
Germany arc four officers and eight hundred
privates in the hospitals, and ten officers and
seventy privates, imprisoned for various offen
ces.
London, August 2.—A grand banquet will be
given in Londou on the I5tb, in celebration of
the centenary of Sir Walter Scott. HepWorth
Dixon will preside, and it is anticipated that
four hundred of the most distinguished people
of.Great Britain and the Continent will be pres

NIGHT DISPATCHES.
Alexandbia, Va., August 2.—Hon. Horaco
Greeley, who was here on a visit, delivered an
address at the Methodist Episcopal Church this
afternoon. Tha notice being short, the audi
ence was not very large, though highly iutolli-
gent, composed principally of Southern men.
Mr. Greeley said ho thought it highly desirable
to have a respite of politics this year, in antici
pation of tho gravo issues that would have to be
mot next year. Reconstruction had been
thought slow, but it hud been fust enough. Had
all been agreed to live six years under military
rule, it would have been better, becanso of the
imposition of light taxes. There would have
been no parties, no fury, no creation
of debt. Southern men were not pre
pared to go into the Union at onee from
tha war.. The South had recuperated faster
than any other country ever did befo.e—faster

Mr. Felix Corput's store, near this office, a lamp
of ice, manufactured in Atlanta. It is not, wo
think, as pare or hard as tho lake ice we get
from tho North. It has a chalky appearanco
and is almost opsqne. A block of natural ice
was lyiDg by the side of it to show tho differ
ence, and wo must say that Nature is still ahead
of man in this, as in all of her works.

The new court-honso bell was being elevated
to its lofty position yesterday afternoon by
means of windlass and pulleys. Quito a crowd
assembled to witness the performance. Before
the bell got up beyond reach with the hands,
from the gronnd, it was struck a time or two
with tho clapper. It has a very deep, clear and
majestic tone, that was much admired by the
crowd. The bell will cost about $2,000, inclu
ding all charges. It is, perhaps, the largest
and finest bell in the State.

master to fix up his new qnarters in convenient
and comfortable style, both for the good of the

will be ready for oconpancy on the first of Oo-
tober, the day on -which the new Court-house
will probably be tamed over to the building
committee.
The Studebaker Wagon is still far ahead of
all competition, and as the season is now coming
on when wagons are aoeded by our farmers
and planters, it would be well for us to state
where they can bo had. W. W. Collins, on
Second street, between J. W. Burke & Go’s,
book-store and the carriage hou30 of J. DeLoache,
is the agent for eleven different styles of two
horse wagons and six different styles of one
horse work. The Studebaker Wagon is claimed
to be tho best, as hundreds con testify who have
bought aud used them. So we would advise all
in quest of a good wagon, from a one to a six
horse, to call on, or write to, Mr. Collins, and
get a warranted wagon—ono that you can de
pend upon.
Lofty Tumbuno.—One of the news boys
of this office, Angus Winberg, fell from a sair-
wav platform in the roar of this bnilding last
night, to a brick paxement below—a distance
of abont IC feet. He received several wounds
and bruises abont the head and body. Notwith
standing his injuries, we hope to -seo him ont
this morning and sound as a nicklo.
By the way,ah’Ule incident occurred among the
newsboys last night which tickled cs and shows
their ruling passion. Several of them sleep in
the mailing room, and when the accident above
noticed happened, one of the little fellows seized
another that was asleep and hurriedly told him
Angus had fallen and killed himself. The only
response the little slnmberer made was: ‘ ‘F-i-v-e
c-e-n-t-s”—dreaming, perhaps, that ho was
about to sell a paper.
