The street cleaners went over Second street

made the hearts of the denizens of that fash

is that the three little black lines usually printed

our citizens who havo bought of them had bet

Chess.—The amateurs of this noblo game are
more numerous in Macon now, than at any pe
riod of its history. All of the well to-do can’t-
get-aways havo a board and men convenient,
with which to while away the J #8 dnli hours,
when a visitor drops in. Macon sports several
veiy good players; bnt wo do not know that
there is a first clas3 player in the State. Tho
brag player here is a Third Street grocer and
provision dealer. He took a tilt at ns yesterday,
bnt wo soon ascertained tho fact that he knew

Central Kailboad and Macon and Bbdxb-

about Judge Bullard’s .“freighta”—tho Central
Railroad and the Macon and Brunt-wick bills—
misinterpreted, and we desire to say seriously
that we neither have nor had any idea that the
Central Railroad has made any effort to dis
credit these bills. They are only in the same
category of other parties who refuse to receive
them—willing to take them so long as redeema
ble in bankable currency, and unable to take
them any longer.
A New Way to Pcbiey Well Watee.—We
heard yesterday a now plan to purify the water
in wells. A citizen who recently pnrebased a
city residence found the water of that whitish,
chalky color so often found in many of our
wells. In order to remedy the evil he put a
quantity of pebbles on the'bottom, which acted
as a strainer in forcing the water to percolate
through it. The result was highly satisfactory
the water now being as pure and dear as a
perfectly blown plate of glass.
In making experiments of this kind care
should be taken not to reduce the amount of
water so that the bucket will not sink. The
depth shonld be first ascertained, and the rock
so placed as to form a uniform bed all over
every inch of the bottom. It would be better
to send a man down to do the work correctly.
The pebbles onght not to be smaller than the
seed of the plum nor larger that that of the
peach, and to bo washed perfectly clean before
used.

Pbemicsis fob the State Faib.—A paragraph
appeared a few days ago in the Atlanta Sun
and it was copied in this paper, announcing
that Messrs. Sharp & Floyd, jewelers, of Atlan
ta, had been awarded the contract by the Geor
gia State Agricultural Society for manufactur
ing the silver plate and preminms to be awarded
at the State Fair. We are authorized to state,
by Major W. A. Huff, that tho premiums to be
awarded at the State Fur, in this city next Oc
tober, will be paid in greenbacks and gold coin,
at the time they are awarded by the judges, and
on the Fair Grounds. There will be no delay in
the matter, nor will there be offered to any ex
hibitor, as a premium, any galvanized tin plate
or silverware. The cash will be planked down
on the spot. The Society may have engaged
Sharp A Floyd to make a few medals specified
in the premium list, bnt certainly not any silver
plate or ware, for nothing of the sort will be of
fered. Exhibitors will therefore bear in mind
that they will receive money as premiums, and
that they will get it immediately after it is
awarded.
Got Oct op It.—A man who had been ar
rested for drunkenness and disorderly conduct,
on Thursday night last, was assigned comfort
able quarters over night, in one of the cells at
the City Hall, the arresting officer expecting to
introduce his victim to the Mayor yesterday
morning. So soon as the prisoner sobered off a
jittle, he formed a dislike for his apartments,
and the idea of appearing before the Mayor, to
be fleeced of thelittle change in his pocket, and
subjected to the rude stare of the rabble dis
gusted him, and visions of breathing again the
pure air of liberty and heaven “danoed o’er his
mind.” On awaking, his first thought was to
realize the sweets of his dream, and he pro
ceeded to operate upon the delicate net work of
wrought iron which ornamented iris cell window.
Soon one of the bars yielded to his Herculien
muscles and it was removed, and then another
and another, until an opening was famished
sufficiently large to pass him through, and ont
ho poppod like a little Fnnch under the vigor
ous broomstick strokes of his Jndy. Having
bnsiness to detain him at the barracks, he went
strolling ad libitum, and has not yet returned,
nor is he confidently expected.

along tho line of the railroads in the corporate
limits have complained time without number of
the harsh, long continued and unearthly whistles
of the locomotives passing their houses at all
hours of the day and night. That it is a nuisance
of which they not only have a just right to com
plain, bnt to appeal to law for protection
against, is no question. And whilst it is a great
annoyanoe to every one, it is cruelty to the
sick. The engineers seem to take a special de
light, or rather spite, in sonnding their whistles
longer and louder in tho corporation limits than
anywhere else.
And what is tho nso of it ? Who aro they
blowing for ? What aro they blowing at, or np,
or down, or across, or ont of, or in the way?
The only answer wo ever heard to these ques
tions was, to let tho switch tender and depot
agent know we are coming. Well, if these offi
cers can read we would suggest they be furnish
ed with a schedule of the road and instructed
to look for the coming of the trains according
to tho figures, and to have everything in order
accordingly, whether tho train gets there on
time or not. We rather snspect there is a vein
of ili-hnmor about this business, and as the
City Council have the clear and nndonbled
right to suppress a nuisance, we hope it will be
done here as in every other city of note in the
United State. These railroads havo no more

slumbers than has a disorganized mob to go

hooting and yelling ; or, if onr excellent rail
road Presidents would stop the matter they
wonld receive the thanks of thousands of pa

Washington, D. O., August 4, 7:40 p. m. )
The barometer has fallen on the Pacific coast
since Thursday. The low barometer which
then extended from Lake Ontario to Lake Su
perior has moved southeast, and the pressure
has diminished decidedly on the South Atlantic
and in tho Gulf States. Tho winds have re
mained southwest on the Atlantic coast, and
thence east to Lake Erie and Missouri. North
westerly winds havo prevailed to-day north and
west of Illinois. The temperature has increased
somewhat in the Eastern States, and has re
mained quite warm in the Ohio Valley and
southward, bnt has fallen in the north
west. Cloudiness has increased in the South
ern and Gulf States, although light rain has
been reported from bnt one station. Local
rains and threatening weather are now very
generally reported from Illinois eastward to
West Va., and thence to New England and the
lower Lakes.
Probabilities: The area of threatening weather
with local rains will probably extend southeast
and prevail on Saturday from Pennsylvania to
Florida. The area of lowest barometer will
probably pass over Pennsylvania and Massa
chusetts, with heavy rains. The severest local
storms are probable for Virginia and Maryland.
Cool clearing np weather is probable for Satur
