Wa.no Down Ask tho man who complains of
"Wilting down” in toi.id weather what he has done
to sustain bis systom under the extra strain impos
ed on his vitality. Ho may te’l you that ha has
tried a variety of cathartics to purify his blood and
(tighten his spirits. Undor snch treatment, of
conne, his strength has given way, and his ener
gies have bocomo exhausted. What he requ’res is
a restorative, not a depletant. His blood is thin;
bis neiveshavo lost tho 1 'natural tension, and na
ture demands to be ronevated and ro’nforced. Tho
meane ia with-n tho reach of all. For nearly a
acore of years Hostottor's Stomach Bitters has been
building up brokon constitutions, bracing and
•trengthening attenuated frames, and affording
comfoit, easo and hope to thousands. As a pre
ventive of tho epidemics which make such havoc
with the health of tho inhabitants of now settle
ments, this famous tonio is cortainly without a
rival. Perhaps tho principal portion of its world
wide fame ia attributable to ite astonishing cares of
dyspepsia, and all foims of indigestion. But these
are not a moioty of its triumphs. All the typos of
N'lousness yield to its persistent use. It is a regu
lating medicine of tho highest order; and ite effect
upon the secretions, when irregular, is most nrlu-
Ury.
Imposition of tho grossest character is sought to
be practiced upon tho community by vendors, who
recommend under tho name of "bitters,” fiery
compounds of a, dangerous character, which they
attempt to aubstitnto for tho great national tonic.
8hun all auch noatiums, and soo that you have the
genuine Hoetetter’s Stomach Bitters, properly au
thenticated by label, name and etamp, and sold in
bottles only.
CnANoas or Food in the Stomach.—Whon the
food has been masticated and converted into a
semi-liquid paste, it is passed into the stomach,
wliiob Is simply an enlargement, midway, of tho
alimentary canal. It is tho tboatre of tho second
and most important stage of the digestive process.
The food is here exposed to the action of the gas-
hie juice. This is eocroted by the mucous mom-
brine or internet lining of tho stomach, which is
fa" of minute poros communicating with micro
scopic tubes of hags closely reticulated with neivea
and capillary blood-vessels. The function of this
apparatus is tho production of cells, which are dis
charged in innumerable myriads into the cavity of
the stomach. Airived bore they burst and pour
forth their liquid harden. This is tho gastric juice,
which pbysica'ly is a limpid and colorless fiaid.
Chemically, it is poworfu'iy solvent, and of acid
reaction. Its acidity ia mainly owing to the pres
ence of mnriatio or chlorobydric add. Hence, the
utility of salt, th s s mineral famishing the chlorine
of which chlorobydric add is mainly constituted.
There is also present in the stomach an azotised
substance earned pepsin. In the opinion of Liebig
this Is formod of minnte separated portions of the
internal coat of the Stomach, in the coarse of de
composition. It combines with tho oxygen which
has been swallowed entaglod in the saliva, and so
starts the digestive feimeutation. Without an abun
dant secretion of gastric juice the poweis of digestion
must bo inefficient. Now, Dr. Gottlieb Fisch's Bitters
stimulate the flaw of the gastric joice, and thus
strengthen tho digestive powers, and through them
the bodily force s generally.
Connubial Felicity.—Nothing tends^snore to
connubial happiness than cheerful and healthy in
fants and children. Mrs. Whitcomb’s Syrup is the
great children’s soothing remedy.
Mayor Huff is still indisposed at his resi
dence, and is quite too unwell jo attend to bus
iness. H6 is, however, convalescing, and we
hope to see him ont in a day or two.
Cool and showery ia still the style of the
weather wo are having at present in this sec
tion. Several light showers of rain fell yester
day, and at this writing the indications are
good for a few more.
Glass Boobs.—All the front doors of the stores
in the Damour Block, on Second street, have
been removed and new and handsome glass doors
put in their places, thus giving the fronts a
stylish and city-like appearance, and rendering
the stores within more secure against the depre
dation of burglars.
‘Gone Up.”—That infamous and notorious
wretch, Jane Allen, alias Fancy Moll, has at
last got her deserts. Tho Mayor sentenced her
yesterday morning, to sixty days imprisonment
in tho guard-house on one charge, and Jndge
Cowles, of the District Court sentenced her to
hard labor on the streets for six months and
close imprisonment in the county jail for Bix
months more, on another charge. So the
wretch is certainly gono np for fourteen months,
unless tho Governor comes to her rescue with a
pardon.
Edward P. Weston, by long odds tho finest
athletic and pedestrian in America, if not in tho
whole world, will be in Macon daring the State
Fair in October, and will be one of its great at
tractions. Ho will give on each day of tho Fair
an exhibition of his wonderful powers as a
walker for the amusement and interest of visi
tors. His name is almost a household word on
this continent, as he has accomplished feats of
podestrianism that have challenged the wonder
and admiration of the world. In New York, in
May last, he walked 100 miles in 21 honrs, 38
minutes and 15 seconds, and in June last walked
400 miles in five consecutive days.
Still in the Stock Business.—The announce
ment has been made that Mr. J. J. Clay has re
tired from the livery stable business of Holmes
& Clay, bnt it must not be understood that he
has quit the horse and mule trade. On the con
trary he is going into it deeper than ever, and
there is not a man in Georgia more competent
to conduot such a business than J. J. Clay. It
if his forte. He knows all about a horse or mole,
He got a good offer from Air. Thomas Swift to
lease his interest for one year in the livery
business of Holmes & Clay, and accepted it,
and being thus released his facilities are in
creased for conducting the live stock trade. Be
sides, he can give it his whole attention.

Johnson & Smiih.—This is one of tho largest
wholesale grocery firms in Central Georgia.
Their storo is located on the corner of Fonith
and Poplar streets, immediately in front of the
Hollingsworth Block, and adjoining the Plant
ers’ Warehouse. Consequently, it is the nearest
wholesale grocery in tho city to the General
PasssDger Depot and principal hotels. In
deed, it is within one square of one of our
cotton warehouses, next door to tho fourth, and
within two squares of the freight depots of four
of the railroads. As to location, therefore, it
is certainly the most convenient wholesale
grooery establishment in Macon, for country
merchants and planters. As to character and
reliability, no firm In Georgia stands higher
than that of Johnson & Smith. Their facilities
are such that they can offer bargains that wiU
bo found hard to duplicate in Central Georgia.

An IMTUDENT AND ACCOMPLISHED SCOUNDREL.—
Mr. H. P. Brower, of Effingham county, was in
the city yesterday on the trail of a thief named
Wm. O. Bradd, who had been in his employ for
the last two or three months. Bradd went for
Brewer in this fashion: Mr. Brewer had great
confidence in Bradd, end sent him, a few days
since, on a mule to a neighbor’s house to collect
debt, amounting to $131.00. Bradd made the
collection and again mounting the mule, stiuck
ont for Macon instead of returning to his em
ployer. He arrived here on the Central Rail
road, and before his departure on tho South
western Railroad, he dropped into the store of
Mr. Edwards, on Fourth street, and wrote Mr.
Brewer the following cool but none tho less im
pudent epistlo:
Macon, Ga., August, 1871.
Jfr. n. P. Pretcer.—Dear Sir:—This note
will inform you that I left your mule about
throe miles below the county line between
Burke and Screven, on the Augusta road, where
hope you may recover her, if she has not
found her way back. Go up the aforesaid road
till you cross a bridge across a large stream.
Remember what 1 aay. Don’t stop at the pole
bridge, five Uriels below, bnt if I mistake not,
it is across Briar Creek, about two miles, at a

houses, there you may obtain yonr saddle and

I guess you prayed earnestly for me, bnt the
prayers of the wicked availeth nothing. Please
excuse these badly written lines, as I am in a
