Editort Telegraph and Messenger: Much
has been said and a groat deal written about
the prospects of the growing cotton crop. It is
a matter of surprise to see and hear the stu
pid ignoranco manifested upon tho subject.
Any pereon tbnt knows anything at all about
the naturo of tho cotton plant, (if they have
paid any attention to the weather this season,)
knows well that it is impossible for any more
than half a crop to bo mado in tbis county.
In the months of May and Juno and part of
July deluges of rain, cloudy, cold weather in
tho first part of tho season,'and now, for the
last ten days, a withering east wind, and the
plant, now at this time, literally parched with
drouth, cool nights, and all go to provo that
there cannot possibly be more than half a crop
of cotton mado this year.
It is disgusting to hear men talking about
cotton and abont tho weather being favorable,
when many of them conld not tell a patch of
okra from a patch of ootton. This class of men
do not know that ootton is a sun plant, and that
it vm in the sbado and drenched with rain dur
ing the months of May and June and a part of
July, and now, in many localities, the plant has
been parched with drouth for the last thirty
days. Again, this northeast wind now blowing,
and has been for the lost tho days, is pomononH
to vegotatlon, as all experienced planters will
testify.
Thuro is not a negro in Houston county, en
gaged in the cultivation of cotton, that has
sense enough to count two, but wliat knows
more about tha nature of tho cotton plant than
the chief of tho Agricultural Bureau at Wash
ington. nis reporters scattered over tho coun
try, nlno of them out of ten, wonhl not know a
good crop from a poor ono. And yet, notwith
standing their stnpid ignoranco, this loathsome
vermin that swarms over the coantry has much
to do in mala ting the pxiooaf osrgnat staple.
A planter from Brooks county, Georgia, was in
this neighborhood a few days ago, and says ho
saw on his way up thousands of acres that will
not mnko a tenth per acre. The last ten days
have settled tho question in this section of tho
country—there cannot possibly bo moro than
half a crop mado in Houston, Crawford and
Taylor. Lot every planter that can hold his
cotton hold on to it indeed like grim death, and
when he has to sell, only soli enongh to answer
bis present wants, and keep tho balanco under a
shelter at homo. It is time that all tho planters
shonld pull together—that they should use all
the means they hnvo at their command to pro-
vent those soulless, heartless speculators from
controling tho prico of our cotton.

The crops in this State are looking better
than I havo seen anywhere on my route. The
corn began to suffer, a few days ago for want
of rain, but a day of genial showers has placed
that beyond the contingency of failure; while
the tobacco is very promising. There are a
groat many revivals of religion going on in this
section, now confined principally to the Meth
odists, while Baptist associations are being
everywhere held. Rev. Dr. Rosser, of the
Methodist Church, is now preaching here, and
is one of tho most distinguished ministers of
tho V irginia Conference. He proposes making
a tour through the South soon, Macon being
one of his objective points.
Rev. Dr. Barrow.*, of Richmond, Va., has
consented to dedicate the new Baptist Church
